Recently, the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis has increased. In addition, extrapulmonary tuberculosis and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis have also increased. We experienced a 34-year-old male with intestinal tuberculosis which failed to respond to primary anti-tuberculosis therapy. He presented with loose stool, abdominal pain, and weight loss. The caseating granuloma was histologically found. The patient had taken primary anti-tuberculosis drugs for 13 months. However, his symptoms and weight loss did not improve. A colonoscopy showed multiple shallow geographic ulcerations in the cecum and ileocecal valve. Histopathologic examination also showed caseating granuloma. We started primary anti-tuberculosis therapy (isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol, pyrazinamide), but follow-up colonoscopic findings after 2 months revealed no change of multiple ulcerations. After conversion of anti-tuberculosis therapy from primary drugs to secondary rescue regimen (prothionamide, cycloserine, para-aminosalicylic acid, levofloxacin, streptomycin), the patient's symptoms have improved. A follow-up colonoscopy revealed only scarring change in the cecum. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2002;39:299-303)
Expression of Sirt1, Sirt2, Sirt5, and Sirt6 in the Mouse Testis

Sirtuin proteins are evolutionary conserved Sir2-related NAD+-dependent deacetylases and regulate many of cellular processes such as metabolism, inflammation, transcription, and aging. Sirtuin contains activity of either ADP-ribosyl-transferase or deacetyltranfease and their activity is dependent on the localization in cells. However, the expression pattern of Sirtuins has not been well studied. To examine the expression levels of Sirtuins, RT-PCR was performed using total RNAs from various tissues including liver, small intestine, heart, brain, kidney, lung, spleen, stomach, uterus, ovary, and testis. Sirtuins were highly expressed in most of tissues including the testis. Immunostaining assay showed that Sirt1 and Sirt6 were mainly located in the nucleus of germ cells, spermatocytes, and spermatids in the seminiferous tubules, whereas Sirt2 and Sirt5 were exclusively present in the cytoplasm of germ cells and sperma-tocytes. Our results indicate that Sirtuins may function as regulators of spermatogenesis and their activities might be dependent on their location in the seminiferous tubules.

<P>We present the results of a wide-field spectroscopic survey of globular clusters (GCs) in the Virgo cluster. We obtain spectra for 201 GCs and 55 ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) using Hectospec on the Multiple-Mirror Telescope and derive their radial velocities. We identify 46 genuine intracluster GCs (IGCs), not associated with any Virgo galaxies, using the 3D GMM test on the spatial and radial velocity distribution. They are located at a projected distance 200 kpc less than or similar to R less than or similar to 500 kpc from the center of M87. The radial velocity distribution of these IGCs shows two peaks, one at v(r) = 1023 km s(-1), associated with the Virgo main body, and another at v(r) = 36 km s(-1), associated with the infalling structure. The velocity dispersion of the IGCs in the Virgo main body is sigma(GC) similar to 314 km s(-1), which is smoothly connected to the velocity dispersion profile of M87 GCs but is much lower than that of dwarf galaxies in the same survey field, sigma(dwarf) similar to 608 km s(-1). The UCDs are more centrally concentrated on massive galaxies-M87, M86, and M84. The radial velocity dispersion of the UCD system is much smaller than that of dwarf galaxies. Our results confirm the large-scale distribution of Virgo IGCs indicated by previous photometric surveys. The color distribution of the confirmed IGCs shows a bimodality similar to that of M87 GCs. This indicates that most IGCs are stripped off dwarf galaxies and some off massive galaxies in the Virgo.</P>
EBP1 regulates Suv39H1 stability via the ubiquitin-proteasome system in neural development

ErbB3-binding protein 1 (EBP1) is a multifunctional protein associated with neural development. Loss of Ebp1 leads to upregulation of the gene silencing unit suppressor of variegation 3-9 homolog 1 (Suv39H1)/DNA (cytosine 5)-methyltransferase (DNMT1). EBP1 directly binds to the promoter region of DNMT1, repressing DNA methylation, and hence, promoting neural development. In the current study, we showed that EBP1 suppresses histone methyltransferase activity of Suv39H1 by promoting ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS)-dependent degradation of Suv39H1. In addition, we showed that EBP1 directly interacts with Suv39H1, and this interaction is required for recruiting the E3 ligase MDM2 for Suv39H1 degradation. Thus, our findings suggest that EBP1 regulates UPS-dependent degradation of Suv39H1 to govern proper heterochromatin assembly during neural development. [BMB Reports 2021; 54(8): 413-418]

Analysis of Oil Supply Characteristics for Reciprocating Compressor

A problem of oil supply for a reciprocating compressor is very significant for an evaluation of reliability. Since a rotational motion of a crank shaft for the reciprocating compressor with small capacity is used for a power source of oil supply, a centrifugal force of the rotational shaft provides a stroke of oil inside the shaft like a centrifugal pump. The pumped oil rises following an inner wall and provided to a bearing passed through an oil supply hole at the side of the shaft for lubrication of the bearing. In this study, the amount of oil supply has been investigated by a numerical analysis for various conditions such as a shape of a groove, rpm of the compressor, and a shape of a flow channel. Also, a method of increasing oil supply for a low rpm has been studied so that the function can be improved for a variable condition.
설악산 국립공원에서의 흰넓적다리붉은쥐의 행동권 등 생태연구

본 연구는 설악산에서 포획한 흰넓적다리붉은쥐 4마리 (암놈 2, 수놈 2)에 발신기를 부착하여, 일일주기행 동 및 행동권 등의 생태정보를 수집하려는 목적으로 수행하였다. 설악산 흰넓적다리붉은쥐는 17시부터 익일 09시까지 활동하는 야행성 포유류임이 밝혀졌다. 또한 흰넓적다리붉은쥐의 최대 이동거리는 평균 97미터, 행 동권은 평균 712m2임이 처음으로 확인되었으며, 흰넓적다리붉은쥐의 행동권은 등줄쥐 (A. agrarius)보다는 넓으나, 유럽의 A. sylvaticus보다는 좁은 것으로 파악되었다.
다발성 말초신경증이 동반된 불명열로 발현한 혈관내 림프종증

불명열의 원인에는 감염, 신생물, 교원섬유혈관질환 등의 여러 가지 질환이 속한다. 불명열 환자를 접하게 되면 그 원인을 밝히기 위한 검사를 시행하게 되는데, 수많은 검사를 시행하고도 그 원인 질환이 진단 안 되는 경우가 5-15% 정도 된다. 불명열의 원인으로서 이전까지 진단이 어려웠던 농양이나 종양은 현대의 방사선적 영상기술 발달로 조기 진단이 가능하게 되었지만, 악성 혈액질환처럼 종괴를 형성하지 않는 질환들의 정확하고 신속한 진단은 여전히 어려운 실정이다. 혈관내림프종증은 림프절 병변을 거의 형성하지 않기 때문에 진단이 매우 어려운 질환이다. 병의 경과가 빨리 진행하여 예후가 좋지 않으므로 신속한 진단이 절실히 요구되는 질환이다. 저자들은 말초신경증이 동반된 불명열을 주소로 내원한 환자에서 흉강내시경 폐생검을 시행하여 혈관내림프종증을 조기 진단할 수 있었기에 이를 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고 하는 바이다. Fever of unknown origin (FUO) is caused by infections (30-40%), neoplasms (20-30%), collagen vascular diseases (10-20%), and numerous miscellaneous diseases (15-20%). The literatures also reveal that 5-15% of FUO cases defy diagnosis, despite extensive studies. Diagnostic advances continuously modify the spectrum of FUO-causing diseases. Modern imaging techniques (e.g., ultrasound, CT scan, MRI) enable early detection of abscesses and solid tumors that used to be difficult to diagnose. But the correct diagnosis can be delayed because the tumor, such as rare hematologic malignancy, is difficult to be detected by various imaging studies. Intravascular lymphomatosis (IVL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and generally fatal disease characterized by extensive proliferation of neoplastic mononuclear cells within the lumina of blood vessels. The prognosis is usually extremely poor, with rapid death despite chemotherapy. The diagnosis is most frequently made after biopsy of skin or brain but is often established post mortem. Most patients with IVL present with FUO and nonspecific cutaneous and neurologic manifestations. Peripheral nerve system or pulmonary involvements are not common as initial menifestations. We report a case of intravascular lymphomatosis, presenting as FUO with peripheral polyneuropathy. We made early diagnosis of IVL by video-assisted thoracoscopic lung biopsy. She is improving with good performance after the 4th cycle of chemotherapy till now.
