Researchers have recently discovered ultrastrong and ductile behavior of Au nanowires (NWs) through long-ranged coherent-twin-propagation. An elusive but fundamentally important question arises whether the size and surface effects impact the twin propagation behavior with a decreasing diameter. In this work, we demonstrate size-dependent strength behavior of ultrastrong and ductile metallic NWs. For Au, Pd, and AuPd NWs, high ductility of about 50% is observed through coherent twin propagation, which occurs by a concurrent reorientation of the bounding surfaces from {111} to {100}. Importantly, the ductility is not reduced with an increase in strength, while the twin propagation stress dramatically increases with decreasing NW diameter from 250 to 40 nm. Furthermore, we find that the power-law exponent describing the twin propagation stress is fundamentally different from the exponent describing the size-dependence of the yield strength. Specifically, the inverse diameter-dependence of the twin propagation stress is directly attributed to surface reorientation, which can be captured by a surface energy differential model. Our work further highlights the fundamental role that surface reorientations play in enhancing the size-dependent mechanical behavior and properties of metal NWs that imply the feasibility of high efficiency mechanical energy storage devices suggested before.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Seo, Kwanyong,Yoon, Hana,Ryu, Seong-Wan,Lee, Sunghun,Jo, Younghun,Jung, Myung-Hwa,Kim, Jinhee,Choi, Yang-Kyu,Kim, Bongsoo American Chemical Society 2010 ACS NANO Vol.4 No.5

We report the synthesis of free-standing MnSi nanowires via a vapor transport method with no catalyst and measurements of their electrical and magnetic properties for the first time. The single-crystalline MnSi nanowire ensemble with a simple cubic (B20) crystal structure shows itinerant helimagnetic properties with a Tc of about 30 K. A single MnSi nanowire device was fabricated by a new method using photolithography and a nanomanipulator that produces good ohmic contacts. The single-nanowire device measurements provide large (20%) negative magnetoresistance and very low electrical resistivity of 544 μΩcm for the MnSi nanowire.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

We report the simultaneous and selective synthesis of single-crystalline Co(n)Si NWs (n = 1-3) and their corresponding crystal structures--simple cubic (CoSi), orthorhombic (Co(2)Si), and face-centered cubic (Co(3)Si)--following a composition change. Co(n)Si NWs were synthesized by placing the sapphire substrates along a temperature gradient. The synthetic process is a successful demonstration of tuning the chemical composition in Co(n)Si NWs. The synthesis and detailed crystal structure of single-crystalline Co(2)Si and Co(3)Si are reported for the first time including the bulk and the nanostructure phases. The electrical and magnetic properties of Co(2)Si NWs are investigated and compared with those of CoSi NWs.

Superplastic Deformation of Defect-Free Au Nanowires via Coherent Twin Propagation
Seo, Jong-Hyun,Yoo, Youngdong,Park, Na-Young,Yoon, Sang-Won,Lee, Hyoban,Han, Sol,Lee, Seok-Woo,Seong, Tae-Yeon,Lee, Seung-Cheol,Lee, Kon-Bae,Cha, Pil-Ryung,Park, Harold S.,Kim, Bongsoo,Ahn, Jae-Pyoung American Chemical Society 2011 NANO LETTERS Vol.11 No.8

We report that defect-free Au nanowires show superplasticity on tensile deformation. Evidences from high-resolution electron microscopes indicated that the plastic deformation proceeds layer-by-layer in an atomically coherent fashion to a long distance. Furthermore, the stress–strain curve provides full interpretation of the deformation. After initial superelastic deformation, the nanowire shows superplastic deformation induced by coherent twin propagation, completely reorientating the crystal from <110> to <100>. Uniquely well-disciplined and long-propagating atomic movements deduced here are ascribed to the superb crystallinity as well as the radial confinement of the Au nanowires.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

We report fabrication of Heusler alloy Fe3Si nanowires by a diffusion-driven crystal structure transformation method from paramagnetic FeSi nanowires. Magnetic measurements of the Fe3Si nanowire ensemble show high-temperature ferromagnetic properties with Tc ≫ 370 K. This methodology is also successfully applied to Co2Si nanowires in order to obtain metal-rich nanowires (Co) as another evidence of the structural transformation process. Our newly developed nanowire crystal transformation method would be valuable as a general method to fabricate metal-rich silicide nanowires that are otherwise difficult to synthesize.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

The purpose of this study is to investigate the satisfaction level of public housing and sales housing residents with their current housing and residential environments, and to estimate the kind of residential environment factors associated with residential satisfaction. It also tries to explain the complementary points of social mixed housing policy based on the results. The result shows a difference in the overall residential satisfaction of public and sales housing residents. In addition, the study also found out some discriminatory factors in the residential satisfaction between the residents of the public housing and those of the sales housing. The public housing residents focused mainly on the physical environment, while the sales housing residents focus was on their housing and neighborhood. The residential satisfaction of public housing residents and their interest in child discrimination are closely related to each other. Moreover, the satisfaction with neighbors was found to be an important factor in all residents. These results suggest various efforts needed to improve the residential environment for public and sales housing residents in social mixed housing. In addition, not only is it necessary to actively promote conflict mitigation policies centering on adult residents but also the customize support policy to improve the social capital of students living in social mixed housing.
Steering Epitaxial Alignment of Au, Pd, and AuPd Nanowire Arrays by Atom Flux Change
Yoo, Youngdong,Seo, Kwanyong,Han, Sol,Varadwaj, Kumar S. K.,Kim, Hyun You,Ryu, Ji Hoon,Lee, Hyuck Mo,Ahn, Jae Pyoung,Ihee, Hyotcherl,Kim, Bongsoo American Chemical Society 2010 Nano letters Vol.10 No.2

We have synthesized epitaxial Au, Pd, and AuPd nanowire arrays in vertical or horizontal alignment on a c-cut sapphire substrate. We show that the vertical and horizontal nanowire arrays grow from half-octahedral seeds by the correlations of the geometry and orientation of seed crystals with those of as-grown nanowires. The alignment of nanowires can be steered by changing the atom flux. At low atom deposition flux vertical nanowires grow, while at high atom flux horizontal nanowires grow. Similar vertical/horizontal epitaxial growth is also demonstrated on SrTiO3 substrates. This orientation-steering mechanism is visualized by molecular dynamics simulations.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

ACS Electronic Supporting Info
