Synthesis and Characterization of Indandione derivatives for polymer solar cell

The donor- acceptor (D-A) type polymers for donor material, named BDT-HT-INDT and BDTF-HT-INDT have been designed and characterized for bulk heterojuction polymer solar cells (PSCs). These polymers were synthesized via stille coupling method between the electron defficeint unit HT-INDT with BDT and BDTF, respectively. The BDT-HT-INDT and BDTF-HT-INDT polymers possessed the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels ranged -5.02 to -5.04 eV and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels ranged -3.51 to -3.59 eV, which covered broad absorption ranges with low optical bandgaps. Inverted-type PSCs based on the blend of BDT-HT-INDT (or BDTF-HT-INDT) as a donor and Y6BO as an acceptor were fabricated to investigate the performance of those polymers. The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of the optimized PSCs are reached up to 3.73 % for BDT-HT-INDT and 3.20 % for BDTF-HT-INDT.
Polymer Solar Cells based on Small-molecule Electrolytes as a Cathode Interlayer

New small-molecule electrolytes named 4PBr and 2Ebr were designed as a cathode interlayer for inverted polymer solar cells (PSCs). The structure of ((benzene-1,2,4,5-tetrayltetrakis(methylene))tetrakis(triphenylphosphonium) bromide) (4PBr) is constituted by a phenyl core with four benzyl triphenylphosphonium salts and (N,N’-(1,2-phenylenebis (methylene)) bis(N,N-diethylethanaminium) bromide) (2EBr) has two benzyl trialkyl ammonium salts. These materials have the advantage of allowing mass production with a simple synthetic procedure. Inverted PSCs based on ZnO with and without electrolytes as the electron transporting layer were fabricated to investigate the effect of ionic functionalities on the photovoltaic properties. The device based on 4PBr exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.63 %, which is superior to that based on 2EBr (PCE = 9.56 %).

The devices with more than 13% efficiency began to emerge, and most of the small-molecules began to synthesized into the corresponding structures. The most successful non-fullerene acceptor material which applied the IDC group as the end-capping unit is ITIC, appropriate HOMO and LUMO energy levels, and high electron mobility. Similarly, to be a good acceptor, specific constituent with superior electron affinity, such as IDC, need to be applied to end groups for a particular core. we synthesized small-molecule materials based on A1-π-A2-π-A1 type of structure, BT-T-IDC and BT-T-tB-IDC. The Benzothiadiazole derivatives using IDC didn't show high efficiency due to the grain size, which can be seen by atomic force microscopy and the structure of IDC, which didn't show stronger electron affinity than the Benzothiadiazole which was determined by Gaussian simulation.
