      • Fast Pedestrian Detection with Adaboost Algorithm Using GPU

Chong Chao Cai,Jue Gao,Bian Minjie,Peicheng Zhang,Honghao Gao 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Database Theory and Appli Vol.8 No.6

Pedestrian detection is one of the hot research problems in computer vision field. The Cascade AdaBoost System is a commonly used algorithm in this region. However, when the training datasets become larger, it is still a time consuming process to build one Adaboost classifier. In this paper we detail an implementation of the AdaBoost algorithm using the NVIDIA CUDA framework based on the haar features as feature vectors, and downscaling with integral image. The result shows that we can get nearly 6x from the standard code to with our CPU implementation to achieve a near real-time performance and ensure better classification results in misjudgment.

Low-Frequency Vibration Control of Metro Slab Track Based on Locally Resonant Theory

        Chao Li,Sifeng Zhang,Qian Liu,Chong Zhou,Haichao Qin,Luyu Zhang,Minghu Zhai 대한토목학회 2022 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.26 No.6

Vibration control has always been one of the research hotspots in the field of urban metro system. Due to the unsatisfactory application effect of traditional vibration damping technology in practice, a novel method, based on the locally resonant theory, was introduced into metro vibration damping system to improve the low-frequency vibration reduction effect. Meanwhile, the new metro vibration reduction slab track was designed. Furthermore, the coupled model of the metro vehicle-slab track was established and verified, and the reduction effect of the new metro slab track on low-frequency vibration under the action of metro vehicles was analyzed. Results show that: 1) The new vibration reduction slab track is really in control of the low-frequency vibration (50 − 100 Hz), and the attenuation effect can reach 10 dB; 2) The new slab track has multiple low-frequency vibration band gaps, which can achieve multi-frequency vibration reduction; 3) The new slab track can reduce the vibration acceleration of the track, which can improve the comfort level of the vehicle. Therefore, the local resonance theory enriches the existing metro vibration reduction design theory and provides a method for the design of the metro vibration control.

A Study on the Causal Relationship between Logistics Infrastructure and Economic Growth: Empirical Evidence in Korea

        Chao Wang,Yul-Seong Kim,Chong Wang,Chi Yeol Kim 한국무역학회 2021 Journal of Korea trade Vol.25 No.1

Purpose – This paper investigates the causal relationship between logistics infrastructure development and the economic growth of Korea. Considering the industrial and economic structure of Korea, it is likely that logistics infrastructure is positively associated with the economic growth of the country. Design/methodology – The causal relationship between logistics infrastructure and economic development is estimated using Vector Autoregressive (VAR) and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) considering long-run equilibrium between the two factors. To this end, a dataset consisting of 7 logistics infrastructure proxies and 5 economic growth indicators covering the period of 1990-2017 is used. Findings – It was found that causality, in general, runs from logistics infrastructure development to economic growth. Specifically, the results indicate that maritime transport is positively associated with the economic growth of Korea in terms of GDP and international trade. In addition, other modes of transport also have a positive impact on either the GDP or international trade of Korea. Originality/value – While existing studies in this area are based on either regional observations or a specific mode of transport, this study presents empirical evidence on causality between logistics infrastructure and the economic growth of Korea using a more comprehensive dataset. In addition, the findings in this paper can provide valuable implications for transport infrastructure development policies.

Identifying Effective Management Factors Across Human Errors – A Case in Elevator Installation

        Pin-Chao Liao,Zhangming Ma,Heap-Yih Chong 대한토목학회 2018 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.22 No.9

Human errors are recognized as the main factor in causing construction accidents. Previous studies mainly focused on justifying theories associated with human errors and hardly quantifying the causal relations between external stimuli and human errors. Hence, the aim of this research is to develop comprehensive management measurements for addressing human errors in construction projects. Deductive reasoning was used to describe the methodological process. Firstly, we constructed a theoretical model of human errors based on Cognitive Reliability and Error Analysis Method (CREAM) and knowledge-combined structure learning algorithm. Then, Bootstrap method was adopted to verify the reliability of network topology, while the similarity-flooding algorithm was used to analyze similarity of factors across various causal models for their commonalities. Subsequently, Bayesian parameter estimation was to analyze the sensitivity of the nodes. The results show that inadequate quality control, design failure and inattention are the most fundamental causes of human errors in promoting safety management. This research has proposed an analytical approach that consolidated the influential mechanics to reflect the overall influence of a root cause in the human error. Ultimately, the research lays an analytical foundation for safety management research in the future.

Normative Visual Patterns for Hazard Recognition: A Crisp-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis Approach

        Heap-Yih Chong,Mingxuan Liang,Pin-Chao Liao 대한토목학회 2021 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.25 No.5

Understanding the mental representations used for hazard recognition would help the development of inspection strategies for effective safety management. This study is part of ongoing research to identify hazard recognition patterns based on users’ mental representations. Hence, this study explored normative visual patterns for improving hazard recognition performance using a crisp-set qualitative comparative analysis (cs-QCA). Eye-tracking data and visual trajectories were collected using an eye-tracking device in a structural laboratory. A cs-QCA approach was adopted to analyze and summarize normative visual patterns that were used to successfully detect hazards by all participants, namely, potential electrical contact, a large machine with no guardrails, and steel bars dump. The results show that object identification should suffice as the basis for identifying electricity-related hazards, while struck-by hazards should focus on the objects and their pivot points or potential movement trajectories. The experimental design and analytical approach provide new insights into visual analytics in hazard recognition. The research extends and supplements recognition by component theory in the context of construction hazard recognition. The results also provide new and practical references for hazard inspection training, as well as for future development of automated hazard recognition systems.

The Effects of Environmental Toxins on Allergic Inflammation

        San-Nan Yang,Chong-Chao Hsieh,Hsuan-Fu Kuo,Min-Sheng Lee,Ming-Yii Huang,Chang-Hung Kuo,Chih-Hsing Hung 대한천식알레르기학회 2014 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.6 No.6

The prevalence of asthma and allergic disease has increased worldwide over the last few decades. Many common environmental factors are associated with this increase. Several theories have been proposed to account for this trend, especially those concerning the impact of environmental toxicants. The development of the immune system, particularly in the prenatal period, has far-reaching consequences for health during early childhood, and throughout adult life. One underlying mechanism for the increased levels of allergic responses, secondary to exposure, appears to be an imbalance in the T-helper function caused by exposure to the toxicants. Exposure to environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals can result in dramatic changes in cytokine production, the activity of the immune system, the overall Th1 and Th2 balance, and in mediators of type 1 hypersensitivity mediators, such as IgE. Passive exposure to tobacco smoke is a common risk factor for wheezing and asthma in children. People living in urban areas and close to roads with a high volume of traffic, and high levels of diesel exhaust fumes, have the highest exposure to environmental compounds, and these people are strongly linked with type 1 hypersensitivity disorders and enhanced Th2 responses. These data are consistent with epidemiological research that has consistently detected increased incidences of allergies and asthma in people living in these locations. During recent decades more than 100,000 new chemicals have been used in common consumer products and are released into the everyday environment. Therefore, in this review, we discuss the environmental effects on allergies of indoor and outside exposure.
