According to Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun, the former Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower, the most significant education policy in recent years in Hong Kong was undoubtedly the new academic structure commonly known as “334.” As schools, universities, and the community at large seemed to accept the new academic structure in principle, the areas of contention would mostly lie in the timing and details. Sparked by the suicides of two teachers, a wave of unprecedented protests and opposition against the government’s education policy followed, which led to the departure of the former Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun and the Secretary for Education and Manpower Arthur Li Kwok- cheung from the education portfolio. This situation suggests that something was wrong with the teachers’ working environment. This article aims to make sense of these discursive events through a critical discourse analysis of the “334” education policy with materials taken from documents, speeches, and press releases published by the government as well as newspaper articles drawn from South China Morning Post, which is a rich source of contested ideas. An eclectic approach is drawn from both “state-centered” and “policy cycle” perspectives synthesized and adopted for this article. Upon this contested terrain in which individual policy actors struggle to achieve the desired political outcomes, the intention of this article is to explore how the state and other interest groups acted, reacted, and interacted in the policy processes of the 334 Education Reform.
A Deep Long Short-Term Memory based classifier for Wireless Intrusion Detection System
Sydney Mambwe Kasongo,Yanxia Sun 한국통신학회 2020 ICT Express Vol.6 No.2
Wireless networks have evolved over the years and they have become some of the most prominent communication media. These networks generally transmit large volumes of information at any given time. This has engendered a number of security threats and privacy concerns. This paper presents a Deep Long Short-Term Memory (DLSTM) based classifier for wireless intrusion detection system (IDS). Using the NSL-KDD dataset, we compare the DLSTM IDS to existing methods such as Deep Feed Forward Neural Networks, Support Vector Machines, k-Nearest Neighbors, Random Forests and Naïve Bayes. The experimental results suggest that the DLSTM IDS outperformed existing approaches.

Objective: The primary objective of this study was to quantitatively analyze the bone parameters (thickness and density) at four different interdental areas from the distal region of the canine to the mesial region of the second molar in the maxilla and the mandible. The secondary aim was to compare and contrast the bone parameters at these specific locations in terms of sex, growth status, and facial type. Methods: This retrospective cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) study reviewed 290 CBCT images of patients seeking orthodontic treatment. Cortical bone thickness in millimeters (mm) and density in pixel intensity value were measured for the regions (1) between the canine and first premolar, (2) between the first and second premolars, (3) between the second premolar and first molar, and (4) between the first and second molars. At each location, the bone thickness and density were measured at distances of 2, 6, and 10 mm from the alveolar crest. Results: The sex comparison (male vs. female) in cortical bone thickness showed no significant difference (p > 0.001). The bone density in growing subjects was significantly (p < 0.001) lower than that in non-growing subjects for most locations. There was no significant difference (p > 0.001) in bone parameters in relation to facial pattern in the maxilla and mandible for most sites. Conclusions: There was no significant sex-related difference in cortical bone thickness. The buccal cortical bone density was higher in females than in males. Bone parameters were similar for subjects with hyperdivergent, hypodivergent, and normodivergent facial patterns. [Korean J Orthod 2020;50(2):108-119]
A Deep Gated Recurrent Unit Based Model for Wireless Intrusion Detection System
Sydney Mambwe Kasongo,Yanxia Sun 한국통신학회 2021 ICT Express Vol.7 No.1
With the advances and growth of various wireless technologies, it is imperative to implement robust Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS). This paper proposes the implementation of Deep Gated Recurrent Unit (DGRU) Based classifier as well as a wrapper-based feature extraction algorithm for Wireless IDS. We assess the performance of the DRGU IDS using the NSL-KDD benchmark dataset. Furthermore, we compare our framework to several popular algorithms including Artificial Neural Networks, Deep Long–Short Term Memory, Random Forest, Naive Bayes and Feed Forward Deep Neural Networks. The experimental outcomes demonstrate that the DGRU IDS displays a significant increase in performance over existing methods.
Knockout of the Ribonuclease Inhibitor Gene Leaves Human Cells Vulnerable to Secretory Ribonucleases
Thomas, Sydney P.,Kim, Eunji,Kim, Jin-Soo,Raines, Ronald T. American Chemical Society 2016 Biochemistry Vol.55 No.46

Ribonuclease inhibitor (RNH1) is a cytosolic protein that binds with femtomolar affinity to human ribonuclease 1 (RNase 1) and homologous secretory ribonucleases. RNH1 contains 32 cysteine residues and has been implicated as an antioxidant. Here, we use CRISPR-Cas9 to knock out RNH1 in HeLa cells. We find that cellular RNH1 affords marked protection from the lethal ribonucleolytic activity of RNase 1 but not from oxidants. We conclude that RNH1 protects cytosolic RNA from invading ribonucleases.

Objective: Schizophrenia is associated with impairment in multiple cognitive domains. There is a paucity of research on the effect of prolonged illness duration (≥ 15 years) on cognitive performance along multiple domains. In this pilot study, we used the Global Neuropsychological Assessment (GNA), a brief cognitive battery, to explore the patterns of cognitive impairment in recent-onset (≤ 2 years) compared to chronic schizophrenia (≥ 15 years), and correlate cognitive performance with brain morphometry in patients and healthy adults. Methods: We assessed cognitive performance in patients with recent-onset (n = 17, illness duration ≤ 2 years) and chronic schizophrenia (n = 14, duration ≥ 15 years), and healthy adults (n = 16) using the GNA and examined correlations between cognitive scores and gray matter volumes computed from T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging images. Results: We observed cognitive deficits affecting multiple domains in the schizophrenia samples. Selectively greater impairment of perceptual comparison speed was found in adults with chronic schizophrenia (p = 0.009, η2 partial = 0.25). In the full sample (n = 47), perceptual comparison speed correlated significantly with gray matter volumes in the anterior and medial temporal lobes (TFCE, FWE p < 0.01). Conclusion: Along with generalized deficit across multiple cognitive domains, selectively greater impairment of perceptual comparison speed appears to characterize chronic schizophrenia. This pattern might indicate an accelerated or premature cognitive aging. Anterior-medial temporal gray matter volumes especially of the left hemisphere might underlie the impairment noted in this domain in schizophrenia.
