      • Transforming Myself from a Content Transmitter to an Engaging Story Teller : A Journey of a Teacher

( Phuyal Pundary ),( Luitel Bal Chandra ) 한국수학교육학회 2013 수학교육 학술지 Vol.2013 No.-

Arising from an ongoing MPhil research, This paper aims to demonstrate how I (Pundary Phuyal) challenge my own longstanding belief of teaching mathematics as an act of mere transmission of content, thereby re-conceptualizing my teacherly self towards an approach that can identify qualitative changes in students’ mathematical thinking and reasoning. Using a teaching experiment methodology under a multi-paradigmatic design space of interpretivism, criticalism and postmodernism, the paper shows how teaching mathematics through stories can offer an engaging and illuminating way of communicating mathematical knowledge to Nepalese students in their local cultural contexts. Finally, the paper presents potential contributions of this research in reconceptualising the field of mathematics education as an enterprise for meaningful, life-affirming and meaning- centred learning.

Micro-level estimation of rural poverty and inequality in a village of Nepal

( Anita Bhatt Phuyal ),( Ram Kumar Phuyal ) 전남대학교 지역개발연구소 2015 지역개발연구 Vol.47 No.3

This paper analyzes different natures of rural poverty, and estimate the regression line between income and consumption relationship of Kantai Village Development Committee of Darchula district of Nepal. Each sampling unit of different wards of research area was selected purposively and information sought through structured questionnaires by the researchers. The study has estimated absolute poverty line (Rs. 33.76) which is 60% of sample population. Similarly, upper poverty line (Wolf point) has been estimated to Rs.41.87 per day per capita which is, 78% of sample population whereas 17.5% people are relatively poor and 22% are non poor. Gini's coefficient among the total sample households is found 0.34 and marginal propensity to consume of absolutely poor households is 0.74.The correlation coefficient between income and consumption among total sampled households is 0.83. Hence, the entire outcomes conclude that there is positive correlation between income and consumption. The study also traces out about the high disparity in landholding where most of the poor households are found to be landless. The result recommends that government should provide basic education, nutrition, electricity, and communication facilities to the people of study area, and also support them for creating alternative opportunities of employments for their livelihood.

Population structure and regeneration of Zanthoxylum armatum DC. in Salyan, Nepal

Phuyal, Nirmala,Jha, Pramod Kumar,Raturi, Pankaj Prasad,Rajbhandary, Sangeeta The Ecological Society of Korea 2022 Journal of Ecology and Environment Vol.46 No.2

Background: Zanthoxylum armatum is one of the 30 prioritized medicinal plants for economic development of Nepal with a high trade value. Understanding the ecology of individual species is important for conservation and cultivation purposes. However, relation of ecological factors on the distribution and populations of Z. armatum in Nepal remain unknown. To address this knowledge gap, an attempt has been made to study the population structure, distribution, and regeneration potentiality of Z. armatum. Vegetation sampling was conducted at six different localities of Salyan district along the elevation range of 1,000 m to 2,000 m. Results: Altogether 50 plant species belonging to 44 genera under 34 families were found to be associated with Z. armatum. Significantly higher species richness was found at Rim (1,400-1,700 m) and Chhatreshwori (1,800-2,000 m) and lower at Kupinde (1,600-1,800 m). The highest population density of Z. armatum was at Kupinde (1,600-1,800 m) with a total of 1,100 individuals/ha. and the lowest at Chhatreshwori (1,800-2,000 m) with 740 individuals/ha. Based on the A/F value (Whitford index), it can be said that Z. armatum has random distribution in the study area. The plants were categorized into seedlings, saplings and adults based on plant height and the status of natural regeneration category determined. The regeneration potentiality of Z. armatum in the study area was fair with the average seedlings and saplings densities of 150 and 100 individuals/ha. Respectively. A Shannon-Weinner index mean value of 2.8 was obtained suggesting high species diversity in the study area. Conclusions: The natural distribution and regeneration of Z. armatum is being affected in the recent years due to anthropogenic disturbances. Increasing market demand and unsustainable harvesting procedures are posing serious threat to Z. armatum. Thus, effective conservation and management initiatives are most important for conserving the natural population of Z. armatum in the study area.

Remittances and Household Expenditure Patterns of Selected Families in Kathmandu Valley

( Ram Kumar Phuyal ),( Ram Chandra Dhakal ),( Anju Koirala ) 전남대학교 지역개발연구소 2016 지역개발연구 Vol.48 No.2

This paper made an attempt to study the household expenditure patterns of remittance receiving families in Kathmandu. A field survey was conducted in order to see the contribution of remittance for improving the livelihood of the respondents` family. The factors incorporated in the study were; basic consumption, education, health, entertainment, saving pattern, building a new house and repayment of loan expenses. Non-probability convenient sampling technique was used and a structured questionnaire was distributed to collect the information from the respondents in Kathmandu. The study depicted that the highest portion of the remittance was used on purchasing food expenses and for the education expenses of the children. Other portion of it was used for health expenses, saving; repayment of the loan and etc. The analysis predicts that remittance-recipient households experienced a significant effect of remittance on the household`s consumption, education and health expenses as well as saving which leads to improve the wellbeing of the family.

Investigation of Bacterial Chemotaxis Using a Simple Three- Point Microfluidic System

        김호연,Jamel Ali,Kiran Phuyal,박성수,김민준 한국바이오칩학회 2015 BioChip Journal Vol.9 No.1

A three-point microfluidic system was developedand used to experimentally verify bacterialchemotaxis with known chemoeffectors. Using pneumatically-controlled micro-valves, the device was ableto regulate microscale flows and created concentrationgradients that allowed GFP-labelled Escherichia colicells to interact with an environment that contained achemoattractant and a chemorepellent. Having two separatepossible paths (left and right) for the bacteria tomove forward, this device also allowed for imagingprocessing based removal of noisy data, if adirectionalbias was present. This device could be useful for quantitativeanalysis of chemotactic behaviors with minimaltechnical requirements, and could motivate thedevelopment of future devices based on this concept.
