Competence development in the workplace: Concepts, strategies and effects

Per-Erik Ellström 서울대학교 교육연구소 2008 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.9 No.1

In spite of the expectations that exist regarding efforts to develop competence and in spite of the large amounts of resources devoted to it, there is a marked lack of empirically-based research on competence development in companies and other organizations. The purpose of this article is to present a review of research on strategies for competence development in organizations, their prerequisites and effects. More specifically, the following three questions will be addressed: (i) Why do organizations invest in competence development? (ii) What effects can realistically be achieved through competence development? (iii) What characterizes successful strategies for competence development in organizations? Before these questions are dealt with, different views of the meaning of the concepts of competence and competence development are presented and discussed.

More Than 10 Years' Continuous Oral Treatment with Specific Immunoglobulin Y for the Prevention of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infections: A Case Report

        Anders Larsson,Elin Nilsson,Hans Kollberg,Marie Johannesson,Per-Erik Wej?ker,David Carlander 한국식품영양과학회 2007 Journal of medicinal food Vol.10 No.2

Immunotherapy with specific antibodies is an alternative to antibiotics for the prevention of infections in hu-mans and animals. We have used orally administered immunoglobulin Y (IgY) preparations, purified from eggs of hens im-munized with Pseudomonas aeruginosabacteria, to prevent pulmonary P. aeruginosainfections in a group of patients withcystic fibrosis (CF). Respiratory infections are major problems for CF patients because of the thick mucus in the airways, andchronic P. aeruginosalung infections occur in virtually all CF patients and cause morbidity and mortality. The IgY-treatedgroup had only 2.5 P. aeruginosa-positive sputum cultures per 100 months, and none of the IgY-treated patients becamechronically colonized with P. aeruginosa. In the control group, 13.7 of the cultures per 100 months were positive for P. aerug-inosa, and 24% of patients became chronically colonized with P. aeruginosa. The first enrolled patient in this study has nowbeen treated continuously for more than 10 years. During the first 8 years she only had four P. aeruginosa-positive cultures. After 8 years she became chronically infected, but still after 10 years the bacteria have not turned mucoid. No negative sideeffects of IgY treatment have been noted during these 10 years. To our knowledge this is the longest treatment with specificyolk antibodies for therapeutic purposes.

FXYD-3 expression in relation to local recurrence of rectal cancer

        Per Loftas,Gunnar Arbman,Xiao-Feng Sun,David Edler,Erik Syk,Olof Hallbook 대한방사선종양학회 2016 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.34 No.1

Purpose: In a previous study, the transmembrane protein FXYD-3 was suggested as a biomarker for a lower survival rate and reduced radiosensitivity in rectal cancer patients receiving preoperative radiotherapy. The purpose of preoperative irradiation in rectal cancer is to reduce local recurrence. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential role of FXYD-3 as a biomarker for increased risk for local recurrence of rectal cancer. Materials and Methods: FXYD-3 expression was immunohistochemically examined in surgical specimens from a cohort of patients with rectal cancer who developed local recurrence (n = 48). The cohort was compared to a matched control group without recurrence (n = 81). Results: Weak FXYD-3 expression was found in 106/129 (82%) of the rectal tumors and strong expression in 23/129 (18%). There was no difference in the expression of FXYD-3 between the patients with local recurrence and the control group. Furthermore there was no difference in FXYD-3 expression and time to diagnosis of local recurrence between patients who received preoperative radiotherapy and those without. Conclusion: Previous findings indicated that FXYD-3 expression may be used as a marker of decreased sensitivity to radiotherapy or even overall survival. We were unable to confirm this in a cohort of rectal cancer patients who developed local recurrence.

A comparison of photosynthesis measurements by O2 evolution, 14C assimilation, and variable chlorophyll fluorescence during light acclimatization of the diatom Coscinodiscus granii

        Erik Trampe,Per Juel Hansen,Michael Kühl 한국조류학회I 2015 ALGAE Vol.30 No.2

Photosynthetic rates of the large centric diatom Coscinodiscus granii were measured by means of multicolor variable chlorophyll fluorescence imaging, single cell 14C assimilation, and optical O2 sensor measurements during light acclimatization of cultures grown at five different irradiances: 50, 150, 235, 332, and 450 μmol photons m-2 s-1. Photo-acclimatization was evident from changes of cellular chlorophyll a content, growth rates, and light response curves. Each of the applied methods evaluates different parts and reactions in the photosynthetic apparatus, which makes a direct quantitative comparison of rates difficult, although a different degree of correlation were found between all three methods. However, when used in combination, they provide information about the internal relationship of photosynthetic pathways as well as the variation in photosynthetic capacity between individual cells within a single algal culture.

Photosynthetic rates of the large centric diatom Coscinodiscus granii were measured by means of multicolor variable chlorophyll fluorescence imaging, single cell $^{14}C$ assimilation, and optical $O_2$ sensor measurements during light acclimatization of cultures grown at five different irradiances: 50, 150, 235, 332, and $450{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$. • Swedish Constructing Excellence: A Tool for Quality Management within Construction Projects

Lindstrom, Johnny,Josephson, Per-Erik The Korean Society for Quality Management 2006 The Asian Journal on Quality Vol.7 No.1

The Swedish construction sector has been criticized in media for being corrupted, unproductive and conservative. Several incidents, e.g. cartels, work on the side without paying tax and moisture problems, have had a great deal of attention. Of that reason has the government initiated a number of investigations in order to identify the major problems in the construction industry. Further, they have initiated a development of a tool aimed for (a) to identify risks, (b) to avoid poor quality costs, and (c) to direct towards increased quality and effectiveness in building and civil engineering projects, from a client perspective. The UK Constructing Excellence has often been held up as a model during the debate. However, the Swedish general culture differs from the British, as well as the Swedish system differs from the British. The purpose of this paper is to describe the program for developing the system, including the purposes with the system, identified starting points and demands and the approach/method for the development.
