        Reports : IGF1 potentiates BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells through the enhancement of BMP/Smad signaling

        Engineered bone tissue is thought to be the ideal alternative for bone grafts in the treatment of related bone diseases. BMP9 has been demonstrated as one of the most osteogenic factors, and enhancement of BMP9-induced osteogenesis will greatly accelerate the development of bone tissue engineering. Here, we investigated the effect of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) on BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation, and unveiled a possible molecular mechanism underling this process. We found that IGF1 and BMP9 are both detectable in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Exogenous expression of IGF1 potentiates BMP9-induced alkaline phosphatase (ALP), matrix mineralization, and ectopic bone formation. Similarly, IGF1 enhances BMP9-induced endochondral ossification. Mechanistically, we found that IGF1 increases BMP9-induced activation of BMP/Smad signaling in MSCs. Our findings demonstrate that IGF1 can enhance BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation in MSCs, and that this effect may be mediated by the enhancement of the BMP/Smad signaling transduction triggered by BMP9.       • A Comparative Study on the Policy Features of Chinese Marine Economic Development Pilot Zones

        본 논문은 2011-2012년 설정된 중국 해양경제시범구들을 연구대상으로 하여 각 시범구의 정책특징을 정성적인 비교분석 방법을 통하여 분석하였다. 4개 시 범구의 비교 준거기준은 각 시범구의 경제발전 목표, 과학과 교육방안, 외부지역 과의 발전연계방안, 정치적 기능들이며, 그 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 경제발전목표 측면에서 산동(산동반도남색경제구)은 ‘중국북부 해양경제 의 핵심’을, 절강(절강해양경제발전시범구)은 ‘지역해양경제 강화’을, 광동(광동 해양경제종합시범구)은 ‘중국전체 해양경제의 핵심’을, 복건(복건해협남색경제시 범구)은 ‘지역해양산업의 촉진’을 각각 내세우고 있다. 둘째, 과학과 교육 측면에서 산동이 가장 강점이 크고, 절강은 상대적 강점을 가지지만 과학적 성취능력이 부족하고, 광동은 상대적 취약성과 연구기금체계 부족이, 복건은 과학적 능력 부족의 특징을 각각 가지고 있다. 셋째, 외부지역과의 발전연계방안 측면에서 산동은 북중국 및 동북아시아와의 넓은 연계망을, 절강은 지역중심의 좁은 영역만을, 광동은 남중국과 남동아시아 와의 넓은 연계망을, 복건은 대만 중심의 가장 좁은 영역을 대상으로 한다. 넷째, 정치적 기능 측면에서 산동은 ‘서구세계에 정치적 의지 표현과 동북아시 아 국가들의 협력 촉구’를, 절강은 ‘남중국해 조어도분쟁 해결과 전략적 안보물 자 공급 확보’를, 광동은 ‘광동-홍콩-마카오의 통합 강화와 남중국해 분해결 촉 진’을, 복건은 ‘대만과의 정치적 신뢰 및 친선유지’를 각각 도모하고 있다.

        The Significance and Implications of Establishing Marine Economic Development Pilot Zones in the Viewpoint of China's Marine Industry Policy

        최근 중국정부는 해양경제개발에 초점을 두고 네 개의 해양경제개발시범구를 산동성, 절강성, 광동성, 복건성에 설정하였다. 등소평의 개혁·개방 정책이후 근래 해양경제개발시범구까지 중국의 해양산업정책은 현존정책을 부분적으로 수정·보완하는 연속적·점진적인 변화과정이었으므로, 본 논문은 이러한 정책변화를 잘 설명할 수 있는 이론모형으로 정책학의 점증주의모형(Incremental Model)을 이론적 틀로 하여, 새 중국 해양산업정책인 해양경제개발시범구 정책의 본질, 그 역사적 형성과정, 현재 집행상황, 이전과 다른 새로운 정책특징과 시사점을 발견함과 함께 미래의 점진적 정책변화도 전망·예측해 보았다. 과거 중국 해양산업정책과 차별화되는 새 정책의 주요 특징으로는 1)첨단산업과 과학기술을 포함하는 새로운 발전모형이라는 점, 2)고도의 민주적 참여가 보장된다는 점, 3)정책목표로 해양경제발전뿐 아니라 안보영토, 환경생태, 과학교육 등의 다양한 목표들도 포괄하고 있다는 점이었다. 향후 우리나라는 중국의 해양경제개발시범구 정책 특징에 대한 올바른 이해를 통하여, 최근 이슈화된 해양경제특구 설정관련 정책구상에서 바람직한 교훈을 얻어야 할 것이다. In recent years, Chinese government established 4 pilot zones at Shandong, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Fujian. The national marine development pilot zones policy is formed in order to promote development of Chinese marine economy, as if Chinese government selected 4 special economic zones as the policy experiment areas for economic structural reform at the beginning stage of reform and opening-up. This article utilizes the policy-making theory of Incrementalism Model and aims at searching for the essence, historical formation process, implementation state, implications of 4 Chinese marine economic development pilot zones policy. Moreover, the prospect of their future development is analyzed. The marine pilot zone policy has the following features: new development model with advanced industries and sciences & technology, highly civil participation, plural policy goals. These research results would be able to contribute not only to getting better understanding of China's marine industry policy, but also to drawing lessons for the construction of Korea's marine economic special zone in the viewpoint of policy transfer.

        An Optical Zoom System Based on Tunable Lens with Polymer Membrane and Multilayered Structure

        We have developed an optical zoom system based on tunable lens with polymer membrane and multilayered structure. The presented system employed two tunable lenses and two doublet lenses as the main refractive units. Each tunable lens had a delicately designed, solid-liquid mixed structure with multiple internal slim holes, which helped to improve the lens optical properties and stability against gravity. The optical structure and regulation principle of the zoom system is presented, as well as the detailed fabrication process of the tunable lens. Under different displacement loads, the lens deformation properties, and the adjustment ability and imaging characteristics of the zoom system were measured and analyzed. Besides, the spot diagram, field curvature and distortion of the system were simulated using the Zemax software. The magnification of the designed system could be regulated from 0.2X to 4.3X flexibly depending on the focal variation of each tunable lens.

        A Novel Recursive Algorithm for Efficient ZF-OSIC Detection in a V-BLAST System

        To reduce the implementation complexity of the Vertical Bell Labs layered space-time (V-BLAST) systems with respect to the zero-forcing (ZF) criterion, a computationally efficient recursive algorithm is proposed. A fast implementation of the proposed algorithm is developed and its complexity is analyzed in detail. The proposed algorithm matches the ZF-OSIC detection well, and its three significant advantages can be demonstrated by analyses and simulations. Firstly, its speedups over the conventional ZF-OSIC with norm-based ordering, the original fast recursive algorithm (FRA) and the fastest known algorithm (FKA) in the number of flops are 1.58, 2.33 and 1.22, respectively. Secondly, a much simpler implementation than FRA and FKA can be expected. Finally, the storage requirements are lower than those of FRA and FKA. These advantages make the proposed algorithm more efficient and practical.

        Monte Carlo shielding evaluation of a CSNS Multi-Physics instrument

        The Multi-Physics (MP) instrument is one of 20 neutron spectrometers planned in the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). This paper presents a shielding calculation for the MP instrument using Monte Carlo codes MCNPX and FLUKA. First, the neutrons that escape from the CSNS decoupled water moderator and are delivered to the beam line of the MP instrument are calculated to use as the source term of the shielding calculation. Then, to validate the calculation method based on multiple variance reduction techniques, a cross check between MCNPX and FLUKA codes is performed by comparing the calculation results of the dose rate distribution on a simplified beam line model. Finally, a complete geometry model of the MP instrument is set up, and the primary parameters for the shielding design are obtained according to the calculated dose rate map considering different worst-case scenarios.

        Diversity of Bovine Rumen Methanogens In Vitro in the Presence of Condensed Tannins, as Determined by Sequence Analysis of 16S rRNA Gene Library

        Molecular diversity of rumen archaeal populations from bovine rumen fluid incubated with or without condensed tannins was investigated using 16S rRNA gene libraries. The predominant order of rumen archaea in the 16S rRNA gene libraries of the control and condensed tannins treatment was found to belong to a novel group of rumen archaea that is distantly related to the order Thermoplasmatales, with 59.5% (15phylotypes) and 81.43% (21 phylotypes) of the total clones from the control and treatment clone libraries,respectively. The 16S rRNA gene library of the control was found to have higher proportions of methanogens from the orders Methanomicrobiales (32%) and Methanobacteriales (8.5%) as compared to those found in the condensed tannins treatment clone library in both orders (16.88% and 1.68% respectively). The phylotype distributed in the order Methanosarcinales was only found in the control clone library. The study indicated that condensed tannins could alter the diversity of bovine rumen methanogens.

      • Clinical Implications of p57<sup>KIP2</sup> Expression in Breast Cancer

        Objective: To study the relationship between expression of $p57^{KIP2}$ and prognosis and other clinicopathological parameters in invasive breast cancers. Methods: We assessed the expression of $p57^{KIP2}$ in 89 cases of invasive breast cancer and 20 cases of normal breast tissue by immunohistochemical methods and analyzed the results with SPSS software (ver. 16.0). Result: The positive expression rates of $p57^{KIP2}$ protein in the invasive breast cancers and surrounding normal tissue were 30.3% (27/89) and 65% (13/20), respectively. Cases with no $p57^{KIP2}$ expression exhibited a significantly higher post-operative distant metastasis rate than those with $p57^{KIP2}$ expression (37.9% vs. 14.8%; P = 0.01). DFS analysis showed that $p57^{KIP2}$-/C-erbB-2+ tumors also exhibited a significantly higher post-operative distant metastasis rate than the other groups (66.7% vs. 29.2%; P = 0.007), as did $p57^{KIP2}$-/p53+ tumors (64.3% vs. 22.7%; P = 0.001). Survival analysis revealed that $p57^{KIP2}$ was associated with breast cancer-specific survival overall (P = 0.045, log-rank test). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that individuals with $p57^{KIP2}$-/C-erbB-2+tumors experienced significantly worse post-operative survival than those with $p57^{KIP2}$-/C-erbB-2- or other tumors (P = 0.006, log-rank test). $p57^{KIP2}$-/p53+ tumors were associated with significantly worse post-operative survival than $p57^{KIP2}$-/p53- or other tumors (P = 0.001, log-rank test). Cox regression analysis showed that $p57^{KIP2}$ was a non-independent prognostic factor for breast cancer (P = 0.303). Conclusions: $p57^{KIP2}$ is expressed at low levels in invasive breast cancer and is associated with better overall survival rate and disease-free survival in breast cancer patients, but it was a non-independent prognostic factor for breast cancer. Thus, the connection between $p57^{KIP2}$/p53 and $p57^{KIP2}$/C-erbB-2 may provide biomarkers for breast cancer.
