Junghye Baik(백정혜) 담화·인지언어학회 2024 담화와 인지 Vol.31 No.1
This study aims to investigate the evolution of the Korean interrogative pronoun eti ‘where’ into a discourse marker, analyzing its varied positional implications within sentences. It highlights the increasing relevance of data literacy in linguistic research, leveraging advanced statistical tools within the contexts of big data for a nuanced analysis. The research examines the functional versatility of this morpheme, both as an interrogative pronoun and a discourse marker, and explores the dynamic interplay between its peripheral position within a sentence and semantic concepts. The analysis reveals how peripheral positioning influences the function and meaning of eti as a discourse marker, demonstrating the complex processes of subjectification and intersubjectification in linguistic evolution. This study contributes to understanding linguistic evolution in Korean, particularly in the realm of discourse markers, and underscores the importance of data-driven approaches in linguistic research, reflecting the ongoing evolution of language in response to communicative needs and social contexts.
Perception of and attitude toward ethical issues among Korean occupational physicians
Junghye Choi,Chunhui Suh,Jong-Tae Lee,Segyeong Lee,Chae-Kwan Lee,Gyeong-Jin Lee,Taekjoong Kim,Byung-Chul Son,Jeong-Ho Kim,Kunhyung Kim,Dae Hwan Kim,Ji Young Ryu 대한직업환경의학회 2017 대한직업환경의학회지 Vol.29 No.-
Background: Occupational physicians (OPs) have complex relationships with employees, employers, and the general public. OPs may have simultaneous obligations towards third parties, which can lead to variable conflicts of interests. Among the various studies of ethical issues related to OPs, few have focused on the Korean OPs. The aim of the present survey was to investigate the ethical contexts, the practical resolutions, and the ethical principles for the Korean OPs. Methods: An email with a self-administered questionnaire was sent to members of the Korean Society of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, comprising 150 specialists and 130 residents. The questionnaire was also distributed to 52 specialists and 46 residents who attended the annual meeting of the Korean Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics in October 2015, and to 240 specialists by uploading the questionnaire to the online community ‘oem-doctors’ in February 2016. The responses to each question (perception of general ethical conflicts, recognition of various ethical codes for OPs, core professional values in ethics of occupational medicine, and a mock case study) were compared between specialists and residents by the chi-squared test and Fisher’s exact test. Results: Responses were received from 80 specialists and 71 residents. Most participants had experienced ethical conflicts at work and felt the need for systematic education and training. OPs suffered the most ethical conflicts in decisions regarding occupational health examination and evaluation for work relatedness. Over 60% of total participants were unaware of the ethical codes of other countries. Participants thought ‘consideration of worker’s health and safety’ (26.0%) and ‘neutrality’ (24.7%) as the prominent ethical values in professionality ofoccupational medicine. In mock cases, participants chose beneficence and justice for fitness for work and confidential information acquired while on duty, and beneficence and respect for autonomy in pre-placement examinations. Conclusions: This study evaluated the current perception of and attitude toward ethical issues among the Korean OPs. These findings will facilitate the development of a code of ethics and the ethical decision-making program forthe Korean OPs.
Classification of High Dimensionality Data through Feature Selection Using Markov Blanket
Junghye Lee,Chi-Hyuck Jun 대한산업공학회 2015 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.14 No.2
A classification task requires an exponentially growing amount of computation time and number of observations as the variable dimensionality increases. Thus, reducing the dimensionality of the data is essential when the number of observations is limited. Often, dimensionality reduction or feature selection leads to better classification performance than using the whole number of features. In this paper, we study the possibility of utilizing the Markov blanket discovery algorithm as a new feature selection method. The Markov blanket of a target variable is the minimal variable set for explaining the target variable on the basis of conditional independence of all the variables to be connected in a Bayesian network. We apply several Markov blanket discovery algorithms to some high-dimensional categorical and continuous data sets, and compare their classification performance with other feature selection methods using wellknown classifiers.
On the Nominalizer-to-Stance Development: A Case of Seym `calculation` in Korean
( Junghye Baik ) 한국외국어대학교 언어연구소 2017 언어와 언어학 Vol.0 No.76
The aim of this paper is to illustrate the various uses of the Korean nominal seym `calculation`, ranging from propositional to expressive meanings. An attempt is made at delineating a grammaticalization path, which reveals the extent to which grammaticalization intersects with a number of cognitive mechanisms, such as metaphor, pragmatic inferencing, subjectification, and generalization. In present-day Korean, seym shows diverse functional usages such as a nominal marker, a connective marker, and a sentence final marker. In particular, this item advances in grammaticalization into versatile markers of grammatical concepts, e.g. tense-aspect-modality, style indication, etc. through diverse channels. Considering such versatility of the form as a result of the historical pragmatics and cognitive reanalysis, this paper focuses on the analysis of the semantic and functional changes of seym undergone over time, and discusses what are the possible triggers to cause this versatility to varying degrees within a grammaticalization framework.
From Nominals to Epistemic Markers
Junghye Baik 언어과학회 2015 언어과학연구 Vol.0 No.74
This paper attempts to illustrate how appearance-noun moyang evolves from a full lexical noun into a defective noun nominalizer, and further into a modality-marking nominalizer from a grammaticalization perspective. The primary function of defective-noun-based nominalizer moyang is referential in nature. However, defective noun moyang also develops extended, non-referential functions that include diverse functional markers such as conjecture and prediction. Furthermore, such functions conveyed by moyang also carry various epistemic moods or stances in terms of their uses. These epistemic meanings embedded in its functions are mainfested as conviction, self-assurance, and mitigation. Focusing on the diversity of functional behaviors carried by the noun, this paper examines a nominalization phenomenon in appearance-noun moyang, in particular, the strategies deployed in the formation of niminalization processes formed by the defective noun nominalizer.
A Corpus-Based Analysis of the Functional Split of the Lexical Item the ‘ground’ in Korean
Junghye Baik 언어과학회 2019 언어과학연구 Vol.0 No.88
This paper explores the versatile usages of the Korean nominal element the [tʰə], ranging from propositional to expressive meanings within a grammaticalization framework. In contemporary Korean, it is commonly found that this nominal element is employed simultaneously as both a full-fledged noun and a grammatical marker in diverse contexts, and our focus here is specially on its usage as a grammatical-functional marker. Pursuing this, the current exploration considers such versatility of this single form as a result from the process of the historical pragmatic and syntactic development. With this view, some special issues relevant to its development into versatile markers to varying degrees are discussed with respect to various cognitive mechanisms regarded as major forces to evoke the semantic-functional change. To investigate the distributional characteristics of its versatile usages, a corpus-based analysis is performed by using diachronic and synchronic sources.
