Coenurosis is an important zoonotic helminthic disease caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Taenia multiceps. This parasite typically infects the brain of the intermediate hosts, including sheep, goat, cattle and even hu- mans. We report a case of T. multiceps infection in a yak confirmed by clinical symptoms, morphological characteristics, and molecular and phylogenetic analyses. The coenurus was thin-walled, whitish, and spherical in shape with a diameter of 10 cm. The parasite species was identified as T. multiceps by PCR amplification and sequencing of the 18S rRNA, cox1 and nad1 genes. Three gene sequences all showed high homology (all above 97%) with the reference sequences from different hosts. Moreover, phylogenetic reconstructions with the 3 published Taenia gene sequences confirmed that the Qinghai yak isolate was closely related to T. multiceps. Although there are advanced diagnosis and treatment meth- ods for coenurosis, early infection is difficult to diagnose. Importantly, the findings of yak infection case should not be ig- nored due to its zoonotic potential.

This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the difference of the therapeutic efficacy and adverse effects of leukotriene receptor antagonist and theophylline added to inhaled corticosteroids in adult asthma. Databases were searched for studies published through Nov, 2010. Randomized-controlled trials containing inhaled corticosteroids plus leukotriene receptor antagonist and inhaled corticosteroids plus sustained-release theophylline for asthma therapy were selected. For each report, data were extracted to the outcomes analyzed: mean change in morning peak expiratory flow, mean change in evening peak expiratory flow, mean change in morning forced expiratory volume in 1 sec, mean change in daily short bete2-agonist use, asthma exacerbation and adverse effects. Four assessable trials including 182 asthmatic patients were identified. Inhaled corticosteroids plus leukotriene receptor antagonist was superior to inhaled corticosteroids plus theophylline therapy in improving morning peak expiratory flow in asthmatics (mean difference 19.08 [95% confidence interval 13.37-23.79] l/min, p<0.001) and morning forced expiratory volume in 1 sec in asthmatics (mean difference 0.09 [95% confidence interval 0.03-0.14] liter, p=0.001). In evening peak expiratory flow, daily short bete2-agonist use, asthma exacerbation and adverse effects, there was no significant difference between these two therapies (All p>0.05). Our meta-analysis showed that the combination of inhaled corticosteroids plus leukotriene receptor antagonist resulted in more improvement in both peak expiratory flow and forced expiratory volume in 1 sec in the morning than inhaled corticosteroids plus sustained-release theophylline in adult asthmatics. Further trials are necessary to evaluate the dominant effects of the former combination.
Lung Cancer in a Rural Area of China: Rapid Rise in Incidence and Poor Improvement in Survival
Yang, Juan,Zhu, Jian,Zhang, Yong-Hui,Chen, Yong-Sheng,Ding, Lu-Lu,Kensler, Thomas W,Chen, Jian-Guo Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.16
Background: Lung cancer has been a major health problem in developed countries for several decades, and has emerged recently as the leading cause of cancer death in many developing countries. The incidence of lung cancer appears to be increasing more rapidly in rural than in urban areas of China. This paper presents the trends of lung cancer incidence and survival derived from a 40-year population-based cancer monitoring program in a rural area, Qidong, China. Materials and Methods: The Qidong cancer registration data of 1972-2011 were used to calculate the crude rate, age-standardized rate by Chinese population (CASR) and by world population (WASR), birth cohort rates, and other descriptive features. Active and passive methods were used to construct the data set, with a deadline of the latest follow-up of April 30, 2012. Results: The total number of lung cancer cases was 15,340, accounting for 16.5% of all sites combined. The crude incidence rate, CASR and WASR of this cancer were 34.1, 15.7 and 25.4 per 100,000, respectively. Males had higher crude rates than females (49.7 vs 19.0). Rapidly increasing trends were found in annual percent change resulting in lung cancer being a number one cancer site after year 2010 in Qidong. Birth cohort analysis showed incidence rates have increased for all age groups over 24 years old. The 5 year observed survival rates were 3.55% in 1973-1977, 3.92 in 1983-1987, 3.69% in 1993-1997, and 6.32% in 2003-2007. Males experienced poorer survival than did females. Conclusions: Lung cancer has become a major cancer-related health problem in this rural area. The rapid increases in incidence likely result from an increased cigarette smoking rate and evolving environmental risk factors. Lung cancer survival, while showing some improvement in prognosis, still remains well below that observed in the developed areas of the world.

<P>The effects on the photovoltaic performance of the incorporation of SnO2 nanoparticles into the polymer of a solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) based on the poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether solid electrolyte are studied in this paper. It has been found that the addition of SnO2 nanoparticles to the solid electrolyte produces several key changes in the properties of the solid-state DSC that produced a better performance of the device. Therefore, we have measured an improvement in electrolyte conductivity by a factor of 2, a linear rise in the TiO2 conduction band position, a reduction in the electron recombination rate, and a decrease in charge-transfer resistance at the counterlectrode/electrolyte interface. All these improvements produced an increase in the power conversion efficiency from 4.5 to 5.3% at 1 sun condition, a consequence of the increase of both <I>V</I>oc (oc = open circuit) and <I>J</I>sc (sc = short circuit) without any sacrifice in FF (fill factor)<I>.</I> The origin of these changes has been associated to the strong Lewis acidic character of SnO2 nanoparticles yielding to the formation of a I3– percolation layer for holes at the surface of SnO2 and the reduction of the concentration of free I3– and K+ ions inside the pores of TiO2. From these results, it is concluded that the physicochemical effects of inorganic nanofiller in the polymer electrolyte may also be considered a good route in designing the high efficiency solid-state DSCs employing the polymer electrolyte.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jpccck/2014/jpccck.2014.118.issue-30/jp4117485/production/images/medium/jp-2013-117485_0012.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/jp4117485'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

The antioxidant activity of proanthocyanidins extracted from the lotus seedpods (LSPC) in vitro and ameliorative effects on memory impairment induced using scopolamine in mice were studied. 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability, oxygen radical absorbance capacity, and cellular antioxidant activity assays revealed a potent LSPC antioxidant activity. Y-maze and step-down avoidance testing showed that LSPC administration at 30, 60, and 90 mg/kg ameliorated memory impairment. LSPC improved glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities, inhibited activities of monoamine oxidase-B, total nitric oxide synthase, neuronal nitric oxide synthase, and acetylcholinesterase, and had no influence on inducible nitric oxide synthase and nitric oxide levels in the brain. LSPC ameliorated scopolamineinduced memory impairment based on improvement of the antioxidant system and cholinergic activity, which may be associated with potent antioxidant ability.

Ascaris suum eggs are inactivated by composting conditions; however, it is difficult to find functional changes in heat-treated A. suum eggs. Here, unembryonated A. suum eggs were incubated at 20˚C, 50˚C, and 70˚C in vitro, and the gene expression levels related to viability, such as eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (IF4E), phosphofructokinase 1 (PFK1), and thioredoxin 1 (TRX1), and to apoptosis, such as apoptosis-inducing factor 1 (AIF1) and cell death protein 6 (CDP6), were evaluated by real-time quantitative RT-PCR. No prominent morphological alterations were noted in the eggs at 20˚C until day 10. In contrast, the eggs developed rapidly, and embryonated eggs and hatched larvae began to die, starting on day 2 at 50˚C and day 1 at 70˚C. At 20˚C, IF4E, PFK1, and TRX1 mRNA expression was significantly increased from days 2-4; however, AIF1 and CDP6 mRNA expression was not changed significantly. IF4E, PFK1, and TRX1 mRNA expression was markedly decreased from day 2 at 50˚C and 70˚C, whereas AIF1 and CDP6 mRNA expression was significantly increased. The expressions of HSP70 and HSP90 were detected for 9-10 days at 20˚C, for 3-5 days at 50˚C, and for 2 days at 70˚C. Taken together, incremental heat increases were associated with the rapid development of A. suum eggs, decreased expression of genes related to viability, and earlier expression of apoptosis-related genes, and finally these changes of viability- and apoptosis-related genes of A. suum eggs were associated with survival of the eggs under temperature stress.
Experimental study on axial compressive behavior of hybrid FRP confined concrete columns
Li-Juan Li,Lan Zeng,Shun-De Xu,Yong-Chang Guo 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2017 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.19 No.4
In this paper, the mechanical property of CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and their hybrid FRP was experimentally studied. The elastic modulus and tensile strength of CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and their hybrid FRP were tested. The experimental results showed that the elastic modulus of hybrid FRP agreed well with the theoretical rule of mixture, which means the property of hybrid composites are linear with the volumes of the corresponding components while the tensile strength did not. The bearing capacity, peak strain, stress-strain relationship of circular concrete columns confined by CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and hybrid FRP subjected to axial compression were recorded. And the confinement effect of hybrid FRP on concrete columns was analyzed. The test results showed that the bearing capacity and ductility of concrete columns were efficiently improved through hybrid FRP confinement. A strength model and a stress-strain relationship model of hybrid FRP confined concrete columns were proposed. The proposed stress-strain model was shown to be capable of providing accurate prediction of the axial compressive strength of hybrid FRP confined concrete compared with Teng et al. (2002) model, Karbhari and Gao (1997) model and Miyachi et al. (1999) model. The modified stress-strain model was also suitable for single FRP confinement cases and it was so concise in form and didn't have piecewise fitting, which would be easy for use in structural design.

Background: Breast pain is one of the most common breast disorders, affecting 41%–69% women in the clinical populations. Chinese herbal medicine (Rupi Sanjie, RPSJ) capsule has been recommended to be commonly used for breast pain in China. This review aimed to systematically collect latest evidence and critically evaluate the eff ;ectiveness and safety of RPSJ capsule for breast pain. Methods: We searched 6 databases from their inception to June 1, 2020 for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing RPSJ capsule with conventional drug therapies, placebo or no treatment. Primary outcomes were breast pain relief, reduction of breast mass and clinical cure rate. Results: Seventeen RCTs were included in total, involving 2899 participants with breast pain. RPSJ capsule showed a significant effects in shortening duration of the breast pain (MD-6.51 days, 95%CI [-8.57, -4.45], n = 82, 1 trial), shortening the duration of breast mass (MD-5.17 days, 95%CI [-7.56, -2.78], n = 82, 1 trial), improving clinical cure rate (RR 1.55, 95% CI [1.21, 2.00], I² = 64%, n = 1398, 10 trials) and total effective rate (RR 1.08, 95% CI [1.03, 1.14], I² = 71%, n = 2170, 14 trials) compared to Tamoxifen (TAM). The meta-analysis showed that the incidence of total adverse events was higher in TAM group than the RPSJ capsule group (RR 0.30, 95%CI [0.21, 0.42], I² = 49%, n = 2122, 13 trials). Conclusions: RPSJ capsule appears to be a potentially effective in treating breast pain and seems generally safe for clinical application. However, this potential benefit is inconclusive due to generally weak evidence, and the findings should be further confirmed in large and rigorous trials.
