        This study was concerned with performance of 2 types of black painted solar air heaters, one is finned type better, the other is mesh type. The performance test of heaters was made under the different operating conditions during winter season of December in Seoul area. It was analized and discussed by comparing the overall efficiency of 2 solar heaters at the same mass flow rate and ambient temperature. Experimental results show that finned type solar heater is better than mesh type from the point of view of design and heat removal efficiency. Finned-type solar air heater supplies hot air up to 30 degree centigrade above ambient temperature with an overall efficiency of 47 percent whilemesh type was 44 percent.

        This study was concerned with the performance of solar air heater using parallel channels. Heat transmission model was developed and fabricated to increase the economic feasibility for solar heating system by using the cheap zinc plate. The prformance was discussed as a function of mass flow rate, and plate, inlet and outlet temperatures. Experimental results show that heat transmission model is sufficient for the analysis of thermal characteristics of air heater and collection efficiency is better than the domestic water heater, as the range 32-49 percent. Collection efficiency in the 2 layers of glass cover is better than that in 1 layer, so it is considered better to use the 2 layers of glass cover during the cold winter season in Korea.

        Solar Radiation is effected by the astronomical condition, the collector inclination, the air and the climate conditions before it reaches an earth surface. Based on the data which have been collected and recorded by the Central Meteorological Office and other resources, the effects of those conditions in Korea are analysed and appraised in this report.

        The performance of air type solar heating system has been investigated for a system which has been operating continuously for two years. Design factors of a collector, such as the effective transmittance-absorptance and heat transfer factor were also determined experimentally. The flat plate collector is fabricated from steel sheet metal with two sealed glass covers. Solar heat is stored in a pebble bed of primarily granitic rock approximately 20-40 mm in diameter. The system is controled by automatically driven motors and dampers. The ratio of useful collected solar heat divided by the total solar radiation on the collector dropped was the range of 35 to 42 percent in monthly average. As it result, the air system was found fairly competitive with the water system, however, the heat supply from storage was limited because of using the pebble as the heat storage media.

        For the cost reduction of a flat-plate solar collector, a new galvanized iron collectro plate replaced the convenctional copper or alnminum collector plates and the flow channel was also modified to a rectangular channel for a better heat transfer performance. A simple analytical model was developed and agreed well with the experimental results. The results show better thermal performance for a rectangular channel than for a conventional circular channel.

      • Effect of Virus Infection on Insulin Secretion of Cultured Murine Pancreatic Beta Cells

        SJL/J mice의 췌장베타세포를 배양하여 coxsackie $B_3$와 $B_4$, murine cytomegalovirus, mengo vrius, encephalomyocarditis virus의 M variant, mumps vrius, herpes simplex virus type I과 type II등의 virus를 감염시켜, 배양한 췌장 베타세포의 viral induction, viral antigen, viral replication 그리고 세포내와 세포의 insulin치와의 관계등을 연구 검토한 결과, encephalomyocarditis virus의 M variant로 감염시킨 경우에 high viral titer ($8.1{\times}10^5$ PFU)를 나타냈고, immunofluorescence에 의해서도 coxsackie virus로 감염시킨 경우보다 encephalomyocarditis virus의 M variant로 감염시킨 배양한 췌장베타세포에서 high viral antigen이 발견되었으며 immunoreactive insulin치도 coxsackie virus로 감염시킨 경우보다 encephalomyocarditis virus의 M variant로 감염시킨 경우가 세포내와 세포외 모두에서 현저하게 감소되어 이었다. 이를 종합하여 볼 때 배양한 췌장 베타세포의 insulin분비에 미치는 virus의 영향은 췌장베타세포서의 viral replication능력을 갖은 특정한 virus에 따라 다름을 알 수 있었다. In vitro infections of murine pancreatic beta cell cultures with coxsackie $B_3$, coxsackie $B_4$, murine cytomegalovirus, mumps virus, EMC-M virus, Herpes simplex virus type I and type II were determined. In vitro infection of the beta cell cultures with EMC-M virus resulted in higher viral titer than the beta cell cultrues infected with other viruses. Double-labelled antibody techniques showed that coxsackie viral antigens were rarely detected in the cultured beta cells which were positive in fluorescence-labelled anti-insulin antibody staining, while high per cent of EMC-M viral antigen was found in those cells. And also its intracellular and extracellular levels of immunoreactive insulin from the beta cell cultures infected with EMC-M virus were more decreased than the beta cell cultures infected with other viruses. It is concluded that the viral infection to murine pancreatic beta cell cultures is restricted to the specific virus which has the ability of replication in the beta cells.

        흰쥐 인슐린종세포에서 고농도 포도당의 Alloxan 독성 증강 효과

        고농도 포도당은 산화적 세포손상을 유발할 수 있는데 본 실험에서는 RINm5F 세포에서 고농도 포도당의 노출시간에 따른 SOD 동종효소 활성도를 측정한 결과 고농도 포도당에 3일간 배양한 세포에서 total SOD 활성도는 대조군과 차이를 나타내지 않았으나, CuZn-SOD 활성도가 25%가 감소되었고, Mn-SOD 활성도는 56%가 증가되었고, 21일간 배양한 RINm5F 세포에서는 total SOD 활성도는 34%, CuZn-SOD는 26%, Mn-SOD는 49%의 효소 활성도가 각각 증가되었다. 비변성 폴리아크릴아마이드겔 전기영동을 시행하여 효소활성도을 염색한 결과도 고농도의 당에서 3일간 배양한 세포의 CuZn-SOD 활성은 대조군에 비하여 저하되었으나, Mn-SOD의 활성은 증가되었고, 21일간 배양한 세포의 CuZn-SOD와 Mn-SOD 활성은 모두 증가되었다. RT-PCR을 시행한 결과 고농도 포도당에서 3일간 배양한 세포의 CuZn-SOD mRNA 량은 대조군과 차이가 없었고, Mn-SOD mRNA량은 증가되었으며, 21일간 배양한 세포에서는 CuZn-SOD와 Mn-SOD mRNA 모두 대조군보다 증가되었다. 고농도 포도당에서 3일간 배양한 RINm5F 세포는 alloxan에 대한 감수성이 더 증가되고, CuZn-SOD 억제제인 DDC도 alloxan의 독성을 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 고농도 포도당에 RINm5F 세포를 단기간 배양하면 CuZn-SOD 활성이 감소되는데, 이는 세포의 산화적 손상에 대한 감수성이 더 증가되는 요인이 될 것이며, 장기간 배양하면 항산화효소의 생성량이 증가되어 효소 활성도가 증가되는 것으로 추정된다. Reactive oxygen species are produced under diabetic conditions and possibly cause various forms of tissue damage in patients with diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of high glucose on the alloxan-induced beta cell injury. The insulinoma (RINm5F) cells were cultured either with high glucose (22.2 mM) or normoglucose (5.6 mM) in RPMI 1640 media for 3 days. The SOD activities were determined by spectrophotometric assay and nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) stain. The effects of high glucose on the cytotoxicity of alloxan were also investigated in RINm5F cells and the cells viability were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) methods. Results showed that the CuZn-SOD activity was decreased but Mn-SOD activity was increased significantly in RINm5F cells cultured with high glucose (22.2 mM) media. The cytotoxicity of alloxan was increased by high glucose compared with normoglucose in RINm5F cells. Diethyl-dithiocar- barmate (DDC), as inhibitor of CuZn-SOD, also potentiate the alloxan-induced cytotoxocity in RINm5F cells. These results suggest that, in RINm5F cells, short term culture with high glucose media decreases CuZn-SOD activity and the decreased activity of CuZn-SOD may be one of the causative factors of beta-cell injury induced by high glucose.

      • 칼로리 급여량 제한이 OLETF 쥐의 혈당 및 혈청 지질량에 미치는 영향

        To determine the effects of caloric restriction on obese type 2 diabetes we measured body blood glucose and serum lipid level in dietary restricted Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats. OLETF rats (obese diabetic rats) and Long Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO) rats (control rats) were grouped into 2 groups; control (free feed) group and 30% caloric restricted (30% CR) group. At 24 weeks of age the 30% CR animals were provided a diet at a level of 30% less food (by weight) than control rats consumed during the previous week. Blood glucose levels and serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, and high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol levels of CR rats were determined every 2 weeks for 8 weeks total. Blood glucose, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels of OLETF rats were significantly higher compared to LETO rats. In OLETF rats, the blood glucose levels were decreased to 61% by 8 weeks in the 30% CR compared to the non-CR control group, but changes of blood glucose levels were not observed in LETO rats during the 8weeks in the 30% CR. The serum triglyceride levels of OLETF rats were decreased significantly in the 30% CR but no change in the serum of LETO rats was found. The total cholesterol level was not changed by dietary restriction in LETO rats, but significant changes were observed in OLETF rats by 30% dietary restriction. HDL-cholesterol levels were also increased by dietary restriction in both LETO and OLETF rats. These results suggested that elevated blood glucose, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in diabetes II patients may be reduced by caloric restriction.
