      • Identifying Dyslexia

        Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disabilities and can be observed in every language and culture. In order to properly identify dyslexia educators must not only use multiple kinds of tests, but they must also take into account environmental factors that may cause dyslexia-like problems for a learner that does not have the disability. While educators should be watching for signs of disabilities, different schools and school districts have different amounts of resources that they can devote to the identification and intervention for dyslexic students. This paper looks at the benefits and challenges of trying to identify dyslexia and how we might overcome the obstacles that exist inside and outside the classroom. Ultimately it is the learner who must live with dyslexia and therefore it is the learner or their guardian that must be proactive about which approach to learning best suits them.

        Novel Wire-Guided Scalpel to Facilitate Central Venous Catheter Insertion without a Skin Bridge

        Central venous catheter (CVC) placement is a commonly performed procedure. More than 5 million CVC placements are performed annually in the United States, with nearly 45% of critical care patients and 8% of all inpatients requiring a CVC during their hospitalization. A novel wire-guided scalpel (GuideBlade; Ambitus Medical Supplies LLC, Oceanside, NY, USA) has recently been introduced into clinical practice. In this communication, we will describe how to use the device and discuss possible advantages associated with its routine use during CVC placement.

      • Determining the Effects of Lipophilic Drugs on Membrane Structure by Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy: The Case of the Antioxidant Curcumin

        <P>Curcumin is the active ingredient of turmeric powder, a natural spice used for generations in traditional medicines. Curcumin's broad spectrum of antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic, and anti-inflammatory properties makes it particularly interesting for the development of pharmaceutical compounds. Because of curcumin's various effects on the function of numerous unrelated membrane proteins, it has been suggested that it affects the properties of the bilayer itself. However, a detailed atomic-level study of the interaction of curcumin with membranes has not been attempted. A combination of solid-state NMR and differential scanning calorimetry experiments shows curcumin has a strong effect on membrane structure at low concentrations. Curcumin inserts deep into the membrane in a transbilayer orientation, anchored by hydrogen bonding to the phosphate group of lipids in a manner analogous to cholesterol. Like cholesterol, curcumin induces segmental ordering in the membrane. Analysis of the concentration dependence of the order parameter profile derived from NMR results suggests curcumin forms higher order oligomeric structures in the membrane that span and likely thin the bilayer. Curcumin promotes the formation of the highly curved inverted hexagonal phase, which may influence exocytotic and membrane fusion processes within the cell. The experiments outlined here show promise for understanding the action of other drugs such as capsaicin in which drug-induced alterations of membrane structure have strong pharmacological effects.</P>

        The Future of Electronic Rulemaking : A Research Agenda

        정보 기술의 이용과 발전은 기존의 법제도 형성과 정책 결정 패러다임을 변환기로 이끌고 있다. 특히, 전자행정입법(Electronic Rulemaking)ⅰ)은 정책결정(policymaking)에 있어서 대중(the public)의 참여와 역할을 확대하는데 가장 큰 잠재력을 가진다. 인터넷을 통해서 국민의 공공정책결정이나 입법과정에서의 참여를 증대시키며, 특히 행정입법절차에서의 국민의 역할을 전환시키고 투명성과 신뢰성을 제고하는데 전자행정입법(e-rulemaking)은 중요한 가치수단이 되고 있다. 특히 현대 행정입법의 두드러진 특징 중 하나가 정보(information)의 집약성이라고 할 수 있는데, 정확한 정보는 성공적인 행정입법을 위한 필수적인 전제조건에 속한다고 할 것이다.ⅱ) 이러한 정보의 접근과 획득의 자유를 보장하기 위한 전자입법시스템은 전통적인 행정입법참가 방식들이 가진 시간과 공간의 한계를 극복하게 해주며, 이러한 제약으로부터 자유롭기 때문에 다각적이고 다단계적인 여론 수렴이 가능하고, 무엇보다도 낮은 비용이 큰 이점으로 작용한다. 그러나 인터넷에 의한 (행정)입법참가가 국민전체의 일반의견을 대변하기 보다는 인터넷에 접근이 가능한 유력한 일부계층의 의견만을 반영하는, 즉 접근에 있어서 불평등의 한계를 가진다는 점과, 프라이버시 보호 문제, 컴퓨터에 의한 정보화가 기존의 서류 위주의 정보체계를 완전히 대체할 수 없다는 점, 그리고 인터넷을 통한 (행정)입법참가가 행정입법과정을 과도하게 지배하여 행정청 자신의 책임과 의무를 회피할 위험성을 내포할 수 있다는 점에서 대의제가 가지는 기본가치를 위협할 수 있다는 우려도 간과해서는 안 될 것이다. 전자행정입법(Electronic Rulemaking) 연구에 저명한 학자인 Cary Coglianese 교수는 입법절차를 고안하는 어떠한 결정도 그 자체로 하나의 정치적 선택이 되므로, 온라인 문서보관(online dockets)에서부터 이해당사자들이 가상공간에 모여 의견을 개진하규제배심원(regulatory juries)까지의 선택의 문제에 있어서 신중한 고려가 필요하다ⅳ)고 하였다. 이 글의 저자인 Jeffrey S. ubbers 교수도 입법절차의 전환(transformation)의 필요성을 역설하며 전자행정입법(Electronic Rulemaking)의 정보적(informational)ㆍ참여적(participatory) 목적을 실현하는데 필요한 정책적ㆍ법적ㆍ기술적인 연구를 촉구하고 있다. 입법(rulemaking)은 그자체로 사회적 비용과 혜택 면에서 큰 영향을 미치기 때문에 각종 법규의 질과 제정과정을 개선하는 대안으로 제시된 전자행정입법(Electronic Rulemaking)은 매우 중요한 사회적 의미를 지닌다. 이러한 중요성에 주목하여 미국에서는 1980년대 법학자 Henry Perrit가 정부의 기록 관리와 법규제정분야에 정보기술의 활용 가능성을 주장한 이래로, 1990년대 초 클린턴 행정부가 시작한 정부재창조(Reinventing Government)개혁의 맥을 이어 1990년대 중반에 의회가 문서감축법(Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995)이나 정보자유법(Freedom of Information Act of 1996)을 제정하였으며, 맥을 이어 부시 행정부가 보다 구체적으로 전자법규제정시스템을 추진하였는데 이는 국립과학재단(National Science Foundation)의 연구지원을 받아 Harvard University를 중심으로 본격적인 전자행정입법(Electronic Rulemaking)에 대한 학술적 논의를 진행해 나가가고 있다.ⅴ)

        The Effect of Antidepressants on Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation

        Background: Use of antidepressant medications has been linked to detrimental impacts on bone mineral density and osteoporosis; however, the cellular basis behind these observations remains poorly understood. The effect does not appear to be homogeneous across the whole class of drugs and may be linked to affinity for the serotonin transporter system. In this study, we hypothesized that antidepressants have a class- and dosedependent effect on mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) differentiation, which may affect bone metabolism. Methods: Human MSCs (hMSCs) were committed to differentiate when either adipogenic or osteogenic media is added, supplemented with five increasing concentrations of amitriptyline (0.001-10 μM), venlafaxine (0.01-25 μM), or fluoxetine (0.001-10 μM). Alizarin red staining (mineralization), alkaline phosphatase (osteoblastogenesis), and oil red O (adipogenesis) assays were performed at timed intervals. In addition, cell viability was assessed using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl- 2H-tetrazolium bromide-formazan assay. Results: We found that fluoxetine had a significant inhibitory effect on mineralization. Furthermore, adipogenic differentiation of hMSC was affected by the addition of amitriptyline, venlafaxine, and fluoxetine to the media. Finally, none of the tested medications significantly affected cell survival. Conclusions: This study shows a divergent effect of three antidepressants on hMSC differentiation, which appears to be independent of class and dose. As fluoxetine and amitriptyline, but not venlafaxine, were affected both osteoblastogenesis and adipogenesis, this inhibitory effect could be associated to the high affinity of fluoxetine to the serotonin transporter system.

      • Control Architectures for a Powered Ankle Foot Orthosis

        In this paper, several control methods for a powered AFO are described and tested. As different as they are in their approach, each of them has certain advantages as well as disadvantages. A control concept that meets the unique requirements for ankle gait assistance is needed. One such approach is the dynamic pace controller. This controller adapts to the users’ gait speed. This is accomplished through time modulation and amplitude modulation of the reference command at the input side of the Robotic Tendon actuator. Additionally, a new stiffness-control model has been developed that divides the stance phase of gait into five zones using either velocity or stiffness control for each zone. The design and implementation of these new control algorithms as well as experimental results are presented.

        Dangerous Predatory Publishers Threaten Medical Research

        This article introduces predatory publishers in the context of biomedical sciences research. It describes the characteristics of predatory publishers, including spamming and using fake metrics, and it describes the problems they cause for science and universities. Predatory journals often fail to properly manage peer review, allowing pseudo-science to be published dressed up as authentic science. Academic evaluation is also affected, as some researchers take advantage of the quick, easy, and cheap publishing predatory journals provide. By understanding how predatory publishers operate, researchers can avoid becoming victimized by them.
