      • Classifying Endemic Fagaceae Species in Taiwan using Leaf Images

        Fagaceae is one of the plant family which dominate the broad-leaved forests in Taiwan and have considerable value in economy and ecology. Traditionally, plant species identification based on leaf morphologies and is conducted using naked-eye observation. This study is proposed to distinguish the Fagaceae species using image processing and machine learning. In this study, leaf images of 10 Fagaceae species were collected. A serial of traits relevant to leaf morphologies, such as morphological, color, shape, and venation traits, were quantified from the leaf images. A support vector machine classifier was then developed to identify the species using the quantified traits. The proposed approach reached an identification accuracy of 95.8%.

        Ophiopojaponin D, a New Phenylpropanoid Glycoside from Ophiopogon japonicus Ker-Gawl

        A new phenolic glycoside, ophiopojaponin D (1), together with two known compounds, was isolated from the tubers of a famous traditional Chinese herb-Ophiopogon japonicus Ker-Gawl. The spectroscopic and chemical data revealed their structures to be 3-tetradecyloxy-4- hydroxy-allylbenzene-4-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), 3, 4-dihydroxy- allylbenzene-4-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (2) and L-pyroglutamic acid (3).

        Effects of Sn and Mn Addition on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of As-Extruded Mg–2Al–1Zn Alloys

        The effects of low Sn (1.0 wt%) and Mn (0.5 wt%) content on the microstructures and mechanical properties of as-extrudedMg–2Al–1Zn (AZ21) alloys were systematically investigated. The combined addition of Sn and Mn significantly refinedthe grains of the AZ21 alloy, reducing the average grain size from 25.77 to 2.17 μm. The volume fraction of the dynamicallyrecrystallized (DRXed) grains decreased from 78.49 to 43.81% with Sn (1.0 wt%) and Mn (0.5 wt%) addition. The Al8Mn5,Al11Mn4,and Al9Mn4phases were formed in Mg–2Al–1Zn–1Sn–0.5Mn (AZTM2110) alloy, and the Mg17Al12phase disappeared. The orientation relationship between Al9Mn4and Al11Mn4was (002)Al11Mn4//(̄ 302)Al9Mn4, [ ̄ 100]Al11Mn4//[223]Al9Mn4,and the orientation relationship between Al8Mn5and α-Mg was ( ̄ 252)Al8Mn5//(̄ 12̄ 13)α−Mg. The Al9Mn4and Al11Mn4phasesgrew in the same direction. The intensity of basal fiber texture of AZTM2110 alloy decreased by 21.7%. The ultimatetensile strength, yield strength, and elongation of the AZ21 alloy increased by 29.03%, 65.05%, and 61.02%, respectively. Grain-refinement strengthening was the main mechanism underlying the improvement in AZTM2110 alloy strength. Grainrefinement and the weakened basal fiber texture improved the plasticity of the AZTM2110 alloy.

        “Lapis Lazuli” : A Chinese Reading

        「청금석 부조」는 W. B. 예이츠가 중국을 주제로 다룬 시이다. 중국적인 것에 대한 제한된 지식으로 인해 시인은 그 테마를 정확하게 이해하지 못한 채 중국 청 금석 부조에서 받은 영감을 받아 이 시를 썼다. 이 논문은 중국적 요소가 지닌 본래의 의 미와 예이츠의 재현을 자세히 비교함으로써 예이츠의 상상력이 실제로는 오독에서 비롯 된 것이며 따라서 일부 예이츠 학자들의 해석이 오해에 근거하고 있음을 보여준다. “Lapis Lazuli” is a poem by W. B. Yeats on a Chinese subject. Because of his limited knowledge of Chinese things, the poet wrote a poem just as he was inspired by a Chinese lapis lazuli carving without correctly understanding its theme. By digging into the sources and drawing a detailed comparison between the original meaning of the Chinese elements and Yeats’s representation, this paper shows Yeats’s imagination has actually been founded on his misunderstanding. And it refutes some Yeats scholars’ interpretations that are based on misunderstandings.

        Allele mining in starch synthesis-related genes (SSRGs) has facilitated the discovery of desired natural sequence variations for eating quality in rice. This study investigated the sequence variations from 10 SSRGs, and further evaluated their relationship with the amylose content (AC) and rapid viscosity analysis profiles in a global collection of rice accessions by association mapping (AM). In total, 83 sequence variations were found in 10 sequenced amplicons, including 73 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), eight insertion-deletions (InDels) and two polymorphic simple sequence repeats (SSRs). Four subpopulations were identified by population structure analysis based on 170 genome-wide SSR genotypes. AM revealed 11 significant associations between three phenotypic indices and three sequence variations. One SNP with a g/c transversion at the 63rd nucleotide downstream of the OsBEIIb gene termination codon on rice chromosome 2 was significantly associated with multiple trait indices in both the general linear and mixed linear models (GLM and MLM), including the final viscosity (p < 0.001, R2 = 23.87%) in both 2009 and 2010, and AC (p < 0.01, R2 = 11.25%) and trough viscosity (p < 0.01, R2 = 20.43) in 2010. This study provides a new perspective of allele mining for breeding strategies based on marker-assisted selection.

        Orthogonal Optimization Design and Finite Element Analysis of Converging Stepped Magnetic Fluid Seal

        In order to better solve the problem of air leakage during compressor operation, based on the converging stepped magnetic fluid seal structure, the L16 (4⁴) orthogonal test design and the numerical simulation of the finite element method are combined to optimize the sealing structure. Four factors, four levels and the corresponding orthogonal table are selected in this paper. The simulation results of each test are calculated and range values are studied. Finally, sealing pressure capability of the structure before and after optimization are calculated and compared. The results show that under the conditions of different axial and radial sealing gaps, the sealing pressure capability of converging stepped magnetic fluid seal structure has been significantly improved after orthogonal optimization, especially when the radial sealing gap is relatively small. The maximum pressure capability can be improved by about 11 %, which fully proves the effectiveness of orthogonal optimization. At the same time, the research results can also provide references for the application of other rotary sealing conditions.

        SNP Marker Integration and QTL Analysis of 12 Agronomic and Morphological Traits in F8 RILs of Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)

        Red pepper, Capsicum annuum L., has been attracting geneticists’ and breeders’ attention as one of the impor-tant agronomic crops. This study was to integrate 41 SNP markers newly developed from comparative transcriptomes into a previous linkage map, and map 12 agronomic and morphological traits into the integrated map. A total of 39 markers found precise position and were assigned to 13 linkage groups (LGs) as well as the unassigned LGe, leading to total 458 molecular markers present in this genetic map. Linkage mapping was supported by the physical mapping to tomato and potato genomes using BLAST retrieving, revealing at least two-thirds of the markers mapped to the corresponding LGs. A sum of 23 quantitative trait loci from 11 traits was detected using the composite interval mapping algorithm. A consistent interval between a035_1 and a170_1 on LG5 was detected as a main-effect locus among the resistance QTLs to Phytophthora capsici at high-, intermediate- and low-level tests, and interactions between the QTLs for high-level resistance test were found. Considering the epistatic effect, those QTLs could explain up to 98.25% of the phenotype variations of resistance. Moreover, 17 QTLs for another eight traits were found to locate on LG3, 4, and 12 mostly with varying phenotypic contribution. Furthermore, the locus for corolla color was mapped to LG10 as a marker. The integrated map and the QTLs identified would be helpful for current genetics research and crop breeding, espe-cially in the Solanaceae family.

      • Sequence variations in <i>OsAGPase</i> significantly associated with amylose content and viscosity properties in rice (<i>Oryza sativa</i> L.)

        <B>Summary</B><P>Sequence-based variations in starch synthesis-related genes (SSRGs) exert a basic influence on the determination of eating quality in rice (<I>Oryza sativa</I> L.). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the sequence variations from parts of 10 SSRGs and the amylose content (AC) plus rapid viscosity analysis (RVA) profiles in a heuristic rice core set by association mapping (AM). In total, 86 sequence variations were found in 10 sequenced amplicons, including 79 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), six insertion-deletions (InDels) and one polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR). Among them, 61 variations were exon-based, of which 41 should lead to amino acid changes. Four subpopulations were revealed by population structure analysis based on 170 genome-wide SSR genotypes. The final AM showed a sum of four significant associations between three phenotypic indices and three sequence variations. An <I>ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase small unit 1</I> (<I>OsAGPS1</I>) SNP (A-G) was significantly associated with increased AC (<I>P</I><0·001, <I>R</I><SUP>2</SUP>=15·6%), while a 12-bp deletion of <I>AGPase large unit 4</I> (<I>OsAGPL4</I>) was significantly related to the decreased breakdown viscosity (BDV) (<I>P</I><0·001, <I>R</I><SUP>2</SUP>=16·6%) in both general linear model (GLM) and mixed linear model (MLM). This study provides a new perspective of allele mining for breeding strategies based on marker-assisted selection.</P>
