This paper reviews the R&D results achieved in Korea
Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) in a decade or so. KERI has developed pulsed power technology and its applications mostly based on power electronics. KERI’s R&D activity covers components, military systems, and industry applications.

High voltage switching means developed in KERI are a rotary arc gap switch (11kV, 400kAp), a vacuum rotary arc gap (20kV, 150kAp), an inverse pinch switch (20kV, 150kAp), and 10kV semiconductor switch stacks made of thyristors and IGBTs. The IGBT and thyristor stacks consists of from ten to twelve 1.2kV discrete devices and
are operated by only one active circuit located in the ground side. Some ferromagnetic opening switch schemes are also researched on trial bases.

KERI has developed several pulsed power supplies responding to industry needs, of which applications are electrostatic precipitators, high voltage capacitor chargers, polluted gas treatment systems. The investigated pulsed power applications are rock fragmentation system, plasma ion implantation (PSII), food process, and fine metal powder fabrication system using wire-exploding process.
Sliding Mode Control in a Voltage Source Active Filter

Various nonlinear loads such as diode rectifiers and phase controlled converters connected to ac source cause harmonic pollutions in ac mains Recently some active filters have been proposed to minimize the potential problems. This study describes a method to improve the performances of a voltage source active filter. Two feedback loops are used in the scheme; one for reactive power compensation and the other for harmonic elimination. Experimental te-sults from a laboratory prototype show the effect of the scheme.
A Semi-Pulse Power Supply for Wide-Pitch Electrostatic Precipitators on a 500MW Power Plant
Geun-Hie Rim,Won-Ho Kim,Jong-Soo Kim,Young-Jin,Kim 전력전자학회 1995 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.1995 No.10
Design and operation of energization systems is a well established technique and the choice between DC high
voltage supply and pulse power supply is determined by the coal specification and the power plant layout.
In Korea, coals for power plants are imported from various places such as Nova(Australia), AM(S. Africa), Dongjin (China) and C N.R (Canada). The selection of coals are dependent on combustion ability, price, but not on the precipitation of the fly ash Thus it is required for the precipitators to be able to satisfy environmental regulations for a large variety of coals. In semi-pulse power supplied precipitators, a negative high voltage is applied to the discharge electrodes through a transformer-rectifier set supplying rectified 120 Hz DC pulse current. The pulse enegization system used in the study is capable of supplying -105kV DC depending on the pitch of the collecting electrodes.
In this study, a semi-pulse energization system capable of supplying maximum DC voltage of 105kV developed for a 500MW coal-burning power plant is described.
