Vol.13 No.2
This paper reconstructs the trends of City Pop in East Asia in the 1980’s and examines them in relation to the birth of urban taste and sensibility. City Pop, which is characterized by crossover sound and consumerist fetishism of the city, was in fad among the new-emerging young Japanese middle class during the Bubble Economy period. It was introduced to the Sinophone world via Cantonese and Mandarin covers of the Japanese original songs by Hong Kong super stars such as Anita Mui. In Taiwan and Korea, indigenous singer-songwriters based in Taipei and Seoul created their own City-Pop music with or without a direct connection with Japanese City Pop. This City-Pop boom in the urban areas of East Asia manifests the development of Asian urban sensibility which has transnational nature and cosmopolitan orientation.
Ordinariness and Utopian Landscape Shown in the Design of Seshimwon
(J East Asian Landscape Studies) Vol.10 No.4
The natural aesthetics in a garden are a representation of natural elements by the gardener. They are confined, scaled down, and adjusted to human tastes, rather than being in the natural state of mountains and waters. In that sense, a garden expresses not only shapes, but also the ideals that humans want, and wish to see. The Gyeonggi Garden Exhibition was held at the Seongnam City Hall from October 7 to 9, 2016 under the theme of daily encounters with gardens. This study proposes the design of “Seshimwon” (mind cleansing garden), which is intended to express the exhibition’s theme of “daily gardens” and the aesthetic values of ordinariness, and the ideal relationships existing in abstract nature that the garden pursues through its spatial characteristics. To create the garden’s ordinariness and utopian landscape, pink grass was planted as a background to resemble the abstract images of the Hsien world and Arcadia. A washing machine as the entrance passage is a metaphor for passing through a cave towards a new utopia. In ordinary gardens, ordinariness is expressed by the relationship between the owner and visitors. However, given that there are only visitors at the garden exhibition, the scenery of the season substituted for the owner’s role in the relationship setting. In this way, this garden exhibition represents a new interpretation of how to express basic values of gardens and a given theme.

Because Seoul is a melting pot for Korea’s socio - cultural heritages, artisans’ contributions to representation of Seoul’s cultural values have not been fully appreciated until the present day. It is well known, however, that artisans’ design sense and ability are the primary bases for design of many artifacts in Korean society. It may be possible to represent traditional cultural and spatial characteristics in the works of artisans through new garden design. This was the Seoul city government’s main objective in hosting the 2015 Seoul garden festival in Pyeonghwa Park near Sangam - dong. The Seoul Artisan Garden design was primarily intended to convey both spatial messages and symbolic implications of artisans’ concepts of traditional Seoul culture. The garden itself comprises four layers representing these concepts: the artisan as a person, the tools used, the crafts made, and the nature employed to expose the image. The natural aspects of grass and flowers in the garden interrelate both within and beyond the boundaries of a large, single circle, giving contrast effects. The symbolic image of the relationship between artisan and nature is expressed by the method of displaying grass with crafts in the background, or arranging flowers with repeated shrub partitions as main visual objects. This design metaphor offers a unique method for attracting strong visual curiosity, thereby conveying symbolic meanings of Seoul artisans’ cultural heritage to garden visitors.
