Adaptive Replication Management in HDFS Based on Supervised Learning
Dinh-Mao Bui,Hussain, Shujaat,Eui-Nam Huh,Sungyoung Lee IEEE 2016 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON KNOWLEDGE AND DATA ENGINEERIN Vol.28 No.6

The number of applications based on Apache Hadoop is dramatically increasing due to the robustness and dynamic features of this system. At the heart of Apache Hadoop, the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) provides the reliability and high availability for computation by applying a static replication by default. However, because of the characteristics of parallel operations on the application layer, the access rate for each data file in HDFS is completely different. Consequently, maintaining the same replication mechanism for every data file leads to detrimental effects on the performance. By rigorously considering the drawbacks of the HDFS replication, this paper proposes an approach to dynamically replicate the data file based on the predictive analysis. With the help of probability theory, the utilization of each data file can be predicted to create a corresponding replication strategy. Eventually, the popular files can be subsequently replicated according to their own access potentials. For the remaining low potential files, an erasure code is applied to maintain the reliability. Hence, our approach simultaneously improves the availability while keeping the reliability in comparison to the default scheme. Furthermore, the complexity reduction is applied to enhance the effectiveness of the prediction when dealing with Big Data.

Energy efficiency for cloud computing system based on predictive optimization
Bui, Dinh-Mao,Yoon, YongIk,Huh, Eui-Nam,Jun, SungIk,Lee, Sungyoung Elsevier 2017 Journal of parallel and distributed computing Vol.102 No.-

Abstract

In recent years, power consumption has become one of the hottest research trends in computer science and industry. Most of the reasons are related to the operational budget and the environmental issues. In this paper, we would like to propose an energy-efficient solution for orchestrating the resource in cloud computing. In nature, the proposed approach firstly predicts the resource utilization of the upcoming period based on the Gaussian process regression method. Subsequently, the convex optimization technique is engaged to compute an appropriate quantity of physical servers for each monitoring window. This quantity of interest is calculated to ensure that a minimum number of servers can still provide an acceptable quality of service. Finally, a corresponding migrating instruction is issued to stack the virtual machines and turn off the idle physical servers to achieve the objective of energy savings. In order to evaluate the proposed method, we conduct the experiments using synthetic data from 29-day period of Google traces and real workload from the Montage open-source toolkit. Through the evaluation, we show that the proposed approach can achieve a significant result in reducing the energy consumption as well as maintaining the system performance.

Highlights

Balance between energy efficiency and quality of service in the cloud computing.

Apply prediction technique to enhance the usefulness of monitoring statistics.

Design optimal energy efficiency architecture to orchestrate the cloud system.

After VM consolidation, adaptively turn-off idle physical machines to save energy.

As disinfection is employed extensively, disinfection by-product bromate has become an emerging environmental issue due to its carcinogenic toxicity. For developing an effective alternative approach for reducing bromate, cobalt and nickel-based Prussian Blue (PB) analogues are proposed here for incorporating a convenient reducing agent, NaBH4 (i.e., a H2-rich reagent) for reducing bromate to bromide as cobalt and nickel are recognized as effective metals for catalyzing hydrolysis of NaBH4, and PB exhibits versatile catalytic activity. While CoPB and NiPB are comprised of the same crystalline structure, CoPB exhibits slightly higher specific surface area, more reductive surface, and more superior electron transfer than NiPB, enabling CoPB to accelerate bromate reduction. CoPB also exhibits a higher affinity towards NaBH4 than NiPB based on density functional theory calculations. Moreover, CoPB also exhibits a relatively low activation energy (i.e., 59.5 kJ/mol) of bromate reduction than NiPB (i.e., 63.2 kJ/mol). Furthermore, bromate reduction by CoPB and NiPB could be also considerably enhanced under acidic conditions, and CoPB and NiPB could still effectively remove bromate even in the presence of nitrate, sulfate and phosphate. CoPB and NiPB are also validated to be recyclable for reducing bromate, indicating that CoPB and NiPB are promising heterogeneous catalysts for reducing bromate.

We present CO(3-2), CO(2-1), and 230 GHz (1.3 mm) continuum images of nearby galaxies taken with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Our main topic is to study the relation between higher-J molecular gas (e.g., CO J=3-2, 2-1) and nuclear activities (e.g., active galactic nuclei [AGNs] and starbursts). The nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy M51 shows strong CO(3-2) emission from the circumnuclear molecular gas, with an intensity twice as strong as that of the CO(1-0) emission. Strong CO(3-2) emission enhancement suggests that the circum nuclear molecular gas in M51 is warm and dense, which may be related to the AGN activities. Molecular gas in the nearby moderate starburst galaxy NGC 6946 is distributed along the large-scale bar or spiral arms and along the minibar, and the multi-J CO line images show very similar distribution to each other. For this galaxy, there is no clear enhancement in higher-J lines as seen in M51, which may be because NGC 6946 does not have clear AGN activities. Based on the results of these two galaxies, the physical conditions of the circum nuclear molecular gas may be related to the AGN activities. We also observed the nearby edge-on starburst galaxy NGC 3628 and the starburst/Seyfert composite galaxy NGC 4945 with the CO(2-1) line and 230 GHz (1.3 mm) continuum emission. These information will give us some hints for understanding the relation between nuclear activities and circum nuclear molecular gas and dust.
