Using an approach in line with that of a previous report, we assessed the antioxidant activ-ity of several natural, polyphenol- or tocotrienol-rich mixtures: extracts from Elaesis Guineen-sis oil (A) and Vitis vinifera (B), a Coffea robusta powder (C), and extracts from Olea europeamill wastewaters (D), Solanum melongena (E), and Lycopersicon esculentum (F). The copper-and 2-29-azobis(2-amidinopropane) hydrochloride (AAPH)-oxidation systems were used inthe presence of low-density lipoprotein. For comparison, antioxidant activities of chlorogenicacid and catechin, as archetypes of molecules highly efficient with the coper- and the APH-oxidation system, respectively, were assessed. The aim was to establish the occurrence of syn-ergistic antioxidant actions among some of these natural mixtures. On a molar basis, the high-est specific antioxidant activities (SAA) were found for B, chlorogenic acid, and C in the coppersystem, and for A, catechin, and B in the AAPH system. On a mass basis, the highest SAwere found, respectively, for chlorogenic acid, B, and catechin, and for catechin, chlorogenicacid, and B. These results show that large discrepancies take place in the evaluations betwenthe two systems. B and C exhibited a synergistic antioxidant efficiency, in the presence or ab-sence of A, but only with the copper system. This was also true for the two types of A 1 B1 Cmixture that were tested. It is thought that this association might provide an ideal combina-tion, incorporating both the radical scavenger and the transition-metal ion chelation proper-ties of B and C.69

Korea, the U.S., China and Japan:The Rise of Asian Regionalism
Claude Barfield and Jason Bolton 인하대학교 국제관계연구소 2005 Pacific Focus Vol.20 No.1
The goal of this article is to analyze evolving trade and investment patterns between Korea, the United States and China, against the background of rising East Asian regionalism. The article will also suggest optimal responses for Korea and the United States to these new trends and policy shifts. The article is organized as follows. After the Introduction, the second section will describe the growth of Korea as a trading nation. Section three will analyze in more detail the bilateral trade relationships between Korea and its four largest trading partners: the United States, Japan, China, and the ASEAN nations. The fourth and final section will trace the growth of Asian regional trading patterns and the evolution of institutional arrangements that accompany these tightening trade relations. It will analyze negotiated and proposed bilateral, subregional and regional free trade agreements (FTAs). The article will conclude with recommendations regarding the optimal responses for Korea and the United States to these new realities of Asian trade and regionalism.
Dietary Compounds in Relation to Dietary Diversity and Human Health
Claude L. Hughes,Tilak R. Dhiman 한국식품영양과학회 2002 Journal of medicinal food Vol.5 No.2
The human diet contains numerous endocrine-active compounds that influence mamalianphysiology. The effects of these dietary compounds may be mediated by interaction withwell-characterized intracellular hormone receptors or by other effects on patterns of endoge-nous hormone production, metabolism, target tissue signaling, growth, or differentiation. Be-cause humans evolved as omnivores, the spectrum of dietary compounds that can be toler-ated at modest levels of intake without frank toxicity is broad. Modest intake of these diversenonutritive endocrine-active compounds offers potential human health benefits throughmodulation of metabolic and hormonal responses, especially in sedentary individuals con-suming a highly refined diet.51BACKGROUND CONCEPTS: DIETARYDIVERSITY AND HEALTHWHEN IT COMES TO NUTRITION , what sort ofcreature are we? The old adage that “ Youare what you eat” is not so correct as somethinglike, “ You are what you are because of whatyou are adapted to eat!” We contend that gen-eral biological concepts provide the rationalefor the view that for human beings consump-tion of a broad-based, diversified diet shouldprovide health-promoting benefits. Accord-ingly, we propose that (1) a broad-based, di-versified diet should provide health-promotingbenefits; (2) these benefits will in large part de-rive from inclusion of multiple chemicals thatare nonnutrient or quantitatively inconsequen-tial as nutrients; and (3) general biological con-cepts will provide a strong rationale for thisview. The astonishing array of phytochemicals thatare the products of plant secondary metabolism
