Thermoelectric Properties of the Kondo Semiconductor CeRu4As12 Prepared under High Pressure
Chihiro Sekine,Tomokazu Kawata,Yukihiro Kawamura,Takehiko Yagi 한국물리학회 2013 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.63 No.3
The thermoelectric properties of the Kondo semiconductor CeRu4As12 with a filled skutteruditetypestructure have been studied. The compound CeRu4As12 exhibits a hybridization gap insulatingstate with a small activation energy of 50 K. We report further results for CeRu4As12 synthesized athigh temperatures and high pressures. Seebeck-coefficient and thermal-conductivity measurementshave been performed on this material. The temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient forCeRu4As12 shows two peaks (around 90 K and 280 K). The phenomena could be related to theKondo behavior at high temperatures and a hybridization gap-formation process at low temperatures.

Recently, the personal mobility vehicle (PMV), a vehicle suitable for personal use, has been developed. It moves at low speed and is sufficiently small that it can be ridden in pedestrian space. This vehicle is expected to be a new method of transportation that is practical and environmentally friendly. As one form of PMV, the authors propose a twowheel vehicle with two modes: a two-wheel steering and two-wheel driving bicycle mode and a parallel two-wheel mode. This vehicle has four electric motors, two for driving and two for steering, and one generator connected to the pedals. In the bicycle mode, the rider rotates the pedals to generate electric power, and the motors in the wheels produce torque using the generated energy. The front and rear wheels are steered by the electric motor according to the angle of the handle. Therefore, this bicycle is controlled by a steer-by-wire and a drive-by-wire system. In the parallel two-wheel mode, the vehicle is stabilized according to the theory of the inverted pendulum. In this paper, we focus on the bicycle mode and analyze its stability. Stabilizing the bicycle is not easy since the proposed vehicle has tires with small diameters and the traveling speed is assumed to be low. It is known that the stability of bicycles is tuned by adjusting the bicycle parameters and changing the rear steer angle. However, since we aim to use the vehicle in a narrow walking space at low speed, such conventional methods are not always suitable. The authors propose the stabilization of the bicycle using driving forces and design a controller using linear-quadratic control theory. The results of the numerical simulations show the proposed method is effective in stabilizing the bicycle.

We performed Principle Component Analysis\,(PCA) over 264 galaxies in the {\it IRAS} Revised Bright Galaxy \blue{Sample \citep{Sanders2003}} using 12, 25, 60 and 100\,$\mu$m flux data observed by {\it IRAS} and 9, 18, 65, 90 and 140\,$\mu$m flux data observed by {\it AKARI}. We \blue{found} that (i)the first principle component \blue{was} largely contributed by infrared to visible flux ratio, (ii)the second principal component \blue{was} largely contributed by the flux ratio between {\it IRAS} and {\it AKARI}, (iii)the third principle component \blue{was} largely contributed by infrared colors.

Barrett’s adenocarcinoma may occur in multiple sites, and recurrence and metachronous lesions are the major problems with endoscopic resection. Therefore, early detection of such lesions is ideal to achieve complete resection and obtain improved survival rates with minimally invasive treatment. Laser imaging systems allow multiple modalities of endoscopic imaging by using white light laser, flexible spectral imaging color enhancement (FICE), blue laser imaging (BLI), and linked color imaging even at a distant view. However, the usefulness of these modalities has not been sufficiently reported regarding Barrett’s adenocarcinoma. Here, we report on a patient with three synchronous lesions followed by one metachronous lesion in a long segment with changes of Barrett’s esophagus, all diagnosed with this new laser endoscopic imaging system and enhanced by using FICE and/or BLI with high contrast compared with the surrounding mucosa. Laser endoscopic imaging may facilitate the detection of malignancies in patients with early Barrett’s adenocarcinoma.

Kyocera Corporation is an electronic device, information equipment, and telecommunications equipment manufacturing company headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. The company’s success has depended on its differentiated technology in ceramic manufacturing at the first stage. This technology was first sold to produce a part in TV CRT monitors, which boomed in the 1960s right after the company’s launch. Since its founding in 1959, the company has been continuously exploring technological, product, and business development backed by its strong entrepreneurial mindset. This mindset is nurtured by the “Kyocera philosophy,” the most important vision and motto of the company, which educates and encourages employees to grow themselves, respect others, and behave for all. This philosophy was advocated by the founder, Kazuo Inamori.

A revised Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH)-type neural network algorithm for medical image recognition is proposed and is applied to 3-dimensional medical image analysis of the heart. The revised GMDH-type neural network algorithm has a feedback loop and can identify the characteristics of the medical images accurately using feedback loop calculations. In this algorithm, the polynomial type and the radial basis function (RBF) type neurons are used for organizing the neural network architecture. The optimum neural network architecture fitting the complexity of the medical images is automatically organized so as to minimize the prediction error criterion defined as Prediction Sumof Squares (PSS).

This case report describes the orthodontic treatment performed for open bite caused by internal derangement (ID) and osteoarthritis (OA) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). A Japanese woman, aged 31 years and 11 months, referred to our department by an oral surgeon had an open bite with clockwise rotation of the mandible and degeneration of the condyle. The overbite was corrected through intrusion of the maxillary and mandibular molars using mini-screw implants to induce counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. Then, the mandibular second premolars were extracted and comprehensive orthodontic treatment was performed to establish a Class I molar relationship with distalization of the maxillary arch and to eliminate anterior crowding. Following treatment, her facial profile improved and a functional and stable occlusion was achieved without recurrence of the TMJ symptoms. These results suggest that orthodontic intrusion of the molars is one of the safer and less stressful alternatives for the management of open bite due to degeneration of the condyles caused by ID and OA of TMJ.
