        Serbia’s delayed transformation

        본 논문은 세르비아의 문제가 많은 변화에 대해 상세히 서술한다. 민주당이 이끈 정부가 (주로 제대로 기능하지 못하는 기관들로 인하여) 여러 범위에 걸친 문제를 해결하고 세르비아의 미래를 강화하기에는 무능력했으며 이러한 점이 해로웠다는 것이 2012년 선거에서증명되었다. 그 결과로, 세르비아의 진보당이 정치계에서 중심적인 역할을 차지하게 되었다. 그러나, 진보당의 선거공약은 곧 버려지며기존의 문제 접근법을 반 권위적으로 보이게 만들었다. 마찬가지로염려되는 것은 서구가 이러한 경향을 비판하기 꺼려한다는 점인데,이는 세르비아뿐만 아니라 더 넓은 서쪽 발칸 지역의 민주주의 증진에 대해 진정 관심을 가지고 있는지 의심하게 한다. This article elaborates on Serbia’s problematic transformation. The incapacity of the Democratic Party-led government to tackle a whole range of issues(mostly due to malfunctioning institutions) and consolidate Serbia’s future proved detrimental in the 2012 elections. As a result, the Serbian Progressive Party came to occupy a central role on the political scene. However, the party’s electoral promises were very soon abandoned making the adopted approach look semi-authoritarian. Equally worrying has been the West’s unwillingness to criticise this trend, which has encouraged suspicion about its genuine interest in promoting democracy in Serbia as well as the wider Western Balkan region.

        The Effects of Isotropic Etching on Roughening and Smoothing of Nanostructure

        The main goal of this letter is to show how the same process such as isotropic etching leads to roughening of the nanocomposite materials while for the roughed nanostructure made of homogeneous materials can lead to smoothing. The three dimensional simulations based on the level set method have been carried out in order to study the influence of the isotropic etch process on dynamics of the roughening and smoothing of the substrates indicating the opposite effects of the same process on the surfaces made of different materials. It is known that some roughness and smoothing characteristics obey simple scaling laws. Here, parameters of the scaling law describing temporal dependence of the surface roughness are determined.

      • Synchronization of nonlinear complex networks with input delays and minimum-phase zero dynamics

        The problem of asymptotic synchronization of a complex network consisting of identical nonlinear agents is solved. A small-dimensional problem (with dimension equal to the dimension of only one agent) is derived; its solution is used to solve the asymptotic synchronization problem with a large number of agents. This auxiliary problem is formulated using linear matrix inequalities. The agents of the complex network are supposed to be minimum-phase systems, proof of synchronization of the nonobservable parts is given as well. The results are illustrated by an example.

      • Synchronization of nonlinear multi-agent systems via exact feedback linearization

        Synchronization of a multi-agent system composed of identical nonlinear agents admitting exact feedback linearization is presented. The agents may not be fully linearizable, however, if they are minimum-phase systems, synchronization is achieved. Both leader-following as well as the consensus problem are treated. In the latter case, it is guaranteed that the average dynamics equals to the dynamics of one agent. The results are illustrated by an example.

        Effects of process and design parameters on heat management in fixed bed Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactor

        A two-dimensional pseudo-homogeneous model of wall-cooled fixed bed Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reactor with Co/Re/-Al2O3 catalyst was developed to study the effect of process and design parameters on heat generation and removal characteristics. The influence of liquid-phase formation on heat transport was accounted for by using two-phase correlations. The effect of intraparticle diffusion on heat generation was considered. Detailed numerical simulations were performed to analyze the effect of process and design parameters on the reactor performance in terms of heat management. Results show that thermal behavior of FTS fixed bed reactors is very sensitive and any large disturbances can lead to temperature runaway. Large tube diameters are shown to be particularly unfavorable, with dt>5 cm resulting in axial and radial gradients greater than 20 K and 13 K, respectively. The importance of detailed reactor modeling when designing and optimizing FTS fixed bed reactors is highlighted.

      • Microstructure and corrosion properties of ultrafine-grained interstitial free steel

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The microstructure and the corrosion behaviour of ultrafine-grained interstitial free (IF) ferritic steel processed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at room temperature following route C were investigated. Already after the first pass of ECAP, the microstructure was refined by a factor of approximately 200. On further passes, ECAP was found to lead to continuous grain refinement, while elongated grain structure produced in the first pass was retained throughout all processing cycles. After 8 passes, the microstructure comprised bands of elongated grains of average length of 500–1000nm and average width of 200–300nm. Corrosion characteristics of a non-deformed coarse grained specimen and an ultrafine-grained specimen that had undergone 8 passes of ECAP were investigated using electrochemical potentiodynamic tests. ECAP induced grain refinement does not appear to influence the electrochemical characteristics in neutral NaCl solutions. This encouraging finding demonstrates that ECAP, while enhancing mechanical characteristics, does not compromise corrosion resistance of IF steel. A protective oxidic layer is formed in alkaline NaCl solution, which reduces the corrosion rate significantly.</P>

      • Distributed Control for Microgrid Batteries Communicating over Network with Aperiodically Sampled Data with Time Delays

        This paper proposes aperiodically sampled and time delayed data based distributed control system for frequency restoration, state of charge balancing and voltage restoration, in a microgrid with distributed batteries. Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals and linear matrix inequalities are used to calculate the control system parameters. Real-time simulations using RTDS are used to verify the proposed control method on a European benchmark microgrid.

        Beneficial Effects of Polyphenol-Rich Chokeberry Juice Consumption on Blood Pressure Level and Lipid Status in Hypertensive Subjects

        Epidemiological studies have shown a positive association between intake of foods rich in antioxidants and lower incidence of cardiovascular disease development. Polyphenols are considered the most abundant and important dietaryantioxidants. The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of polyphenol-rich chokeberry juice consumption on 24-h ambulatory monitored blood pressure (BP) level in subjects with no pharmacologically treated high normal BP or grade I hypertension. Twenty-three subjects (12 men and 11 women) aged 33–67 were enrolled and instructed to consume 200mL of juice daily for 4 weeks. Participants were divided in two groups, based on prevalence of sympathetic or parasympatheticactivity. Measurements of biochemical parameters and heart rate variability analysis were also applied. At the end of the intervention period, average 24-h and awake systolic and diastolic BP were significantly decreased (P < .05). This was more pronounced in the group with prevalence of sympathetic activity. Significant reduction in triglyceride level (P < .05) and a reducing effect on total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were also found. Obtained results indicate a positive impact of regular chokeberry juice consumption on BP and lipid status in pharmacologically untreated hypertensive subjects.

        Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties of Some Lichens and Their Constituents

        The aim of this study is to examine the in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the acetone,methanol, and aqueous extracts of the lichens Cladonia furcata (many-forked Cladonia), Hypogymnia physodes (puffed lichen), and Umbilicaria polyphylla (manyleaf navel lichen) and the antimicrobial activity of fumarprotocetraric acid, gyrophoric acid, and physodic acid isolated from the respective lichen species. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by five different methods: free radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging, reducing power, determination of total phenolic compounds, and determination of total flavonoid content. U. polyphyla exhibited more powerful antioxidant activities than the other lichen species examined: methanol extracts of U. polyphyla showed 90.08% free radical scavenging activities (the ratio was greater than those of standard antioxidants). Moreover, the extracts tested had effective reducing power and superoxide anion radical scavenging. Total contents of phenol and flavonoid in extracts were determined as pyrocatechol equivalents and as rutin equivalents, respectively. A significant strong relationship between total phenolic and flavonoid contents and their antioxidative activities was observed. The antimicrobial activity was estimated by determination of the minimal inhibitory concentration by the broth microdilution method against six species of bacteria and 10 species of fungi. In general, the lichen extracts tested and their respective acids had relatively strong antimicrobial activity against the microorganisms tested. The present study shows that the lichen species tested demonstrated strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The results suggest that lichens may be used as good sources of natural antioxidants and for pharmaceutical purposes in treating various diseases.
