Perceptual Priming and Structural Choice in Russian Sentence Production

Andriy Myachykov,Russell Tomlin 서울대학교 인지과학연구소 2008 Journal of Cognitive Science Vol.9 No.1

We report the results of a study that used perceptual priming paradigm to investigate how attentional focus on a referent influences structural choice in Russian sentence production. Experimental hypotheses were based on two previously reported findings. First, some sentence production studies using English demonstrated that perceptually priming a referent of a visual event improves its chances of assignment as the Subject of a sentence about this event and triggers the resulting choice between active and passive voice (Gleitman, et al., 2007; Tomlin, 1995, 1997). Second, a study by Ferreira (1996) showed that English speakers alternate between the structures easier and faster when they have a wider battery of structural alternatives available to them. Our data confirmed both findings with important detalization. First, Russian speakers were more likely to assign the sentential starting point but not the Subject to the perceptually primed referent alternating between the agent-initial and the patient-initial structural alternatives. This finding suggests that perceptual priming leads to the positional but not the preferential assignment of grammatical roles in Russian. Second, Russian speakers having a seemingly wider inventory of structural options than their English counterparts were more reluctant to alternate structure as a function of the perceptual prime. This tendency may result form the necessity to maintain early commitments to the case-marked noun forms, which effectively binds structural selection to a much smaller number of available alternatives than the normative grammar of Russian suggests.

Almost Cossacks, but not Quite: Volunteer Units in the Russian Army (Mid-Eighteenth – Early-Nineteenth Centuries)

Andriy Posunko 부산외국어대학교 지중해지역원 2017 The Mediterranean Review Vol.10 No.2

In this paper I focus on irregulars who served in the Russian imperial army during the Russian-Turkish wars of 1768 – 1774, 1787 – 1792, and 1806 – 1812 and who were recruited from foreign – primarily from Ottoman – subjects. These irregulars were called volunteers, arnauts or cossacks and the study of them will benefit scholarship in at least three ways. First, comparison between the categories of cossacks and volunteers can assist in understanding social categories in the Russian Empire itself. Second, since volunteers were recruited primarily from foreign subjects, it can help to properly connect the history of the Pontic Steppe to that of the Balkans and to trace the movement of both people and ideas across the imperial borders. Finally, compariso of cossacks with typologically similar Balkan military communities can contribute to our understanding of borderland societies in general.

      • Isolation and characterization of bioactive polysaccharides from algae and medicinal mushrooms

        Andriy Synytsya,GordonK.Gomba,Radek Pohl,Peter Capek,Jana Čopíková,Yong-Il Park 한국당과학회 2011 한국당과학회 학술대회 Vol.2011 No.1

Algae and mushrooms are rich sources of bioactive natural components. Among these compounds, polysaccharides are interesting due to their immunomodulating, antitumor, antiviral, coagulating and other properties. Polysaccharides play an outstanding role in the construction of algal and mushroom cell walls. First step of the strategy of polysaccharide isolation from such raw material is fractionation of individual cell wall components by subsequent extractions. The second step is rigorous purification of obtained fractions by using of preparative chromatography, chemical reagents and specific enzymes. Finally, individual polysaccharides within a fraction can be separated from each other by procedures based on the difference in their solubility in various media, sensitivity to chemical or enzymatic destruction, affinity to specific molecules and complexation with metal cations. Structural analysis of isolated algal or mushroom polysaccharides is based on combination of separation, chemical and spectroscopic methods. Total hydrolysis followed by HPLC or GC analysis gives the information about the monosaccharide composition. Gel chromatography equipped with various detectors is used for the molecular mass estimation. FTIR spectroscopy is effective for detection of functional groups, estimation of fraction purity as well as type of polysaccharide. Correlation NMR spectroscopy together with sugar linkage analysis is a powerful tool for detail analysis of polysaccharide structure (types of linkage and substitution, branching, anomeric configuration etc.). Polysaccharide fractions isolated from fruiting bodies of medicinal mushrooms Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus eryngii, Agaricus blazei and Piptoporus betulinus were defined mainly as specific glucans. Branched 1,3-1,6-β-glucan and amylose-like 1,4-α-glucan were found in water soluble fractions, while linear 1,3-α-glucan in alkali soluble fractions. Effective deproteinisation and separation of α- and β-glucans was achieved by the treatment with phenolic reagent. Insoluble fractions contained some amount of chitin as a component of cell wall chitin–glucan complex. Fruiting bodies of wood decay fungi of genera Phellinus and Inonotus contains polyphenols integrated with cell wall polysaccharides. Most of polyphenols, which are interesting due to their strong antioxidative activity, were successfully removed from raw material by extraction with acidic ethanol. Soluble and insoluble polysaccharide fractions isolated from these mushrooms still contained colored products of polyphenol degradation. Polysaccharides were purified by the treatment with acidic or alkali solutions of hydrogen peroxide and defined mainly as branched β-glucans (soluble fractions) and chitin–glucan complex (insoluble part). Korean seaweeds Undaria pinattifida and Capsosiphon fulvescens are sources of bioactive polysaccharides, which were isolated and defined respectively as sulfated/acetylated galactofucan (fucoidan) and sulfated glucuronorhamnoxylan. These polysaccharides have shown various biological activities which make them interesting compounds for medicinal applications. • Automated Assessment Of The Air Situation During The Preparation And Conduct Of Combat Operations Using A Decision Support System Based On Fuzzy Networks Of Target Installations

        Volkov, Andriy,Bazilo, Serhii,Tokar, Oleksandr,Horbachov, Kostiantyn,Lutsyshyn, Andrii,Zaitsev, Ihor,Iasechko, Maksym International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2022 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.22 No.11

The article considers the improved method and model of automated air situation assessment using a decision support system based on fuzzy networks of target installations. The advanced method of automated assessment of the air situation using the decision support system is based on the methodology of reflexive control of the first rank. With this approach, the process of assessing the air situation in the framework of the formulated task can be reduced to determining the purpose, probabilistic nature of actions and capabilities of the air target. The use of a homogeneous functional network for the formal presentation of air situation assessment processes will formally describe the process of determining classes of events during air situation assessment and the process of determining quantitative and qualitative characteristics of recognized air situation situations. To formalize the patterns of manifestation of the values of quantitative and symbolic information, it is proposed to use the mathematical apparatus of fuzzy sets.

      • Attitude and Spin Period of Space Debris Envisat Measured by Satellite Laser Ranging

        Kucharski, Daniel,Kirchner, Georg,Koidl, Franz,Cunbo Fan,Carman, Randall,Moore, Christopher,Dmytrotsa, Andriy,Ploner, Martin,Bianco, Giuseppe,Medvedskij, Mikhailo,Makeyev, Andriy,Appleby, Graham,Suzuk IEEE 2014 IEEE transactions on geoscience and remote sensing Vol.52 No.12

<P>The Environmental Satellite (Envisat) mission was finished on April 8, 2012, and since that time, the attitude of the satellite has undergone significant changes. During the International Laser Ranging Service campaign, the Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) stations have performed the range measurements to the satellite that allowed determination of the attitude and the spin period of Envisat during seven months of 2013. The spin axis of the satellite is stable within the radial coordinate system (RCS; fixed with the orbit) and is pointing in the direction opposite to the normal vector of the orbital plane in such a way that the spin axis makes an angle of 61.86° with the nadir vector and 90.69° with the along-track vector. The offset between the symmetry axis of the retroreflector panel and the spin axis of the satellite is 2.52 m and causes the meter-scale oscillations of the range measurements between the ground SLR system and the satellite during a pass. Envisat rotates in the counterclockwise (CCW) direction, with an inertial period of 134.74 s (September 25, 2013), and the spin period increases by 36.7 ms/day.</P>

      • Design and Hardware Implementation of Fractal Comb-Structured Signals

        Yuriy Bobalo,Andriy Veryha,Mykhailo Klymash,Bohdan Mandziy,Ruslan Politanskyi 한국산학기술학회 2014 SmartCR Vol.4 No.6

Currently, wireless communications networks are developing very quickly and are utilizing more spectral resources. Despite all the efforts to improve wireless network performance and energy-efficiency, spectrum is still overloaded. This problem results in decreasing signal strength and increasing influence of interference. Therefore, it is highly important to develop new methods of data transmission in wireless networks, providing better energy- and spectral-efficiency. In this paper, we propose new types of fractional comb-structured signals. We developed signal models for different types of fractional signals. We also developed hardware for fractional signal generation and transmission based on the PIC16F873 microcontroller. Finally, we conducted experimental analysis of the obtained signals via oscilloscope. Results show that the proposed signal model can be implemented in wideband wireless communications networks, providing good characteristics.

      • Structure and Immune Modulating Activity of a Polysaccharide Purified from Mulberry Fruits Pericarp

        Ji Sun Lee,Andriy Synytsya,Hyun Bok Kim,Woo Jung Kim,Seong Jae Jang,Mi Ja Chung,Ju Hee Ko,Doo Jin Choi,Ha Na Choi,Yong Il Park 한국당과학회 2011 한국당과학회 학술대회 Vol.2011 No.1

In the present study, we investigated structure and immune modulating activity of a polysaccharide (tentatively named JS-MP-1), previously purified from Mulberry fruits (Morus bombycis Koidz) pericarp. Based on HPAEC-PAD analysis, major monosaccharides of JS-MP-1 were shown to be galactose (37.6% in mole percentage), arabinose (36.3%) and rhamnose (18.4%), respectively. EA analysis did not show the presence of sulfur (0.07%). Biochemical analysis showed neutral sugars (35.25%), uronic acid (11.25%), sulfate (0.16%) and proteins (0.3%). FT-IR spectra of JS-MP1 confirmed the presence of carboxyl groups (uronic acid – α-GalAp in RG1) and COC, CO and CC stretching vibrations at 948 – 1150 cm-1 corresponding to polysaccharides. Peak at 894 cm-1 indicates the presence of β-Galp units. 1H-NMR spectrum (in D2O) confirmed the presence of α-1,2-Rhap, α-Araf, β -Galp and α-1,4-GalAp units. The most intense HMQS signals were observed for terminal α-Araf. The presence of methylester groups in the residues of α -1,4-GalAp was confirmed by the HMQS peak at C 54.3/H 4.01 ppm (OCH3). Taken collectively, the JS-MP-1 is probably a rhamnogalacturonan type 1 (RG1), which contains: (a) partially methyl esterified α-1,4-D-GalAp and α -1,2-L-Rhap units in backbone, and (b) α-L-Araf and β-Galp are bound to Rha as terminal units or more complex side chains (arabinan, galactan and/or arabinogalactan). The ELISA assay showed that JS-MP-1 remarkably stimulates the release of the proinflammatory cytokines, TNF-α and IL-6, in a dose-dependent manner, from the RAW 264.7 cells. RT-PCR analysis also showed a significant induction of the iNOS and COX-2 gene expression. These results suggest that JS-MP-1 isolated from the Mulberry fruits has immune modulating activities.
