Insights into the state of radiation protection among a subpopulation of Indian dental practitioners
Almas Binnal,Gururaghavendran Rajesh,Ceena Denny,Junaid Ahmed,Vijayendra Nayak 대한영상치의학회 2013 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.43 No.4
Purpose: Radiographs is an integral part of patient management in dentistry, despite their detrimental effects. As the literature pertaining to radiation protection among Indian dental practitioners is sparse, exploring such protection is needed. Materials and Methods: All private dental practitioners in Mangalore, India were included in the study. A structured, pre-tested, self-administered questionnaire was employed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, practices, previous training, perceptions towards the need to spread awareness, and willingness to gain and implement knowledge about radiation hazards and protection. Information regarding each respondent’s age, gender, education, and type and duration of practice was collected. Results: Overall, 87 out of 120 practitioners participated in the study. The mean knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were 9.54±2.54, 59.39±7.01, and 5.80±3.19, respectively. Overall, 25.3% of the respondents had undergone training in radiation protection, 98.9% perceived a need to spread awareness, and 94.3% were willing to improve their knowledge. Previous training showed a significant correlation with age, sex, and duration of practice; attitude was significantly correlated with education and type of practice; and knowledge scores showed a significant correlation with type of practice. Conclusion: Although the knowledge and practices of respondents were poor, they had a positive attitude and were willing to improve their knowledge. Age, sex, and duration of practice were associated with previous training; education and type of practice with attitude scores; and type of practice with knowledge scores. The findings of this study suggest a policy is needed to ensure the adherence of dental practitioners to radiation protection guidelines.

Dear Editor, The rec(8)dup(8q)inv(8)(p23.1q22.1) chromosome associated with San Luis Valley Syndrome (SLVS OMIM 179613) is usually diagnosed in Hispanic patients from the USA Southwest where a founder carrier Spaniard lived around 1800 [1, 2]. This rec(8) has an 8q duplication of 47.90 Mb and an 8p deletion of 11.65 Mb [3, 4]. Excluding two de novo rec(8)dup q chromosomes characterized only by G-bands and included in a recent compilation [5], cytogenomic analyses identified nine comparable de novo der(8)dup q/del p chromosomes with or without a simultaneous 8p gain. We describe a Mexican mestizo girl with a de novo SLVS-like der(8) but with a concomitant 8p22p23.1 duplication.
An Econometric Model of Employment in Zimbabwe's Manufacturing Industries
Almas Heshmati,Mkhululi Ncube 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2004 Journal of Economic Development Vol.29 No.2
This paper is concerned with the estimation of employment relationship and employment efficiency under production risk using a panel of Zimbabwe’s manufacturing industries. A flexible labour demand function is used consisting of two parts: the traditional labour demand function and labour demand variance function. Labour demand is a function of wages, output, quasi-fixed inputs and time variables. The variance function is a function of the determinants of labour demand and a number of production and policy characteristic variables. Estimation of industry and time-varying employment efficiency is also considered. The empirical results show that the average employment efficiency is 92%.
Affective Attachment to Ecological Consumer Products
Alma Maria Jennifer A. Gutierr,Rosemary R. Seva 대한인간공학회 2014 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.5
There is an increase in the environmental conscience of consumers which results in the increased demand for green products an observation that a number of companies have taken advantage of by offering green products and services (Chan, 1999; J. Ottman, 1992; Peattie & Ratnayaka, 1992; Salzman, 1991; Vandermerwe & Oliff, 1990). The last decade has witnessed a drastic change in consumer preferences towards green products with the emergence of green consumers provoking market method for environmentally friendly organizations and new product innovations Ottman (1993). Integrating emotions into product has become a strategy for most manufacturers. As Marzano (1998) stated “products have personality and can delight, infuriate and empower the consumer”. This study aims to investigate the affective attachment of consumers to ecological products specifically on consumer based products. Aside from this, it wants to determine the type of emotions elicited by these kinds of consumer products. Buying eco products can elicit emotion in consumers. They elicit different kinds of emotional responses. These are normally positive responses making people attracted to these products and end up buying them (Schifferstein & Desmet, 2010). An exploratory pre-purchase affect survey was conducted through field and online survey to determine what shoppers feel while looking for eco-products to buy. This study will provide information on the importance of incorporating ecological attributes to design of consumer products. As of now, not all companies offer eco-friendly products because it is not known if consumers are willing to pay more for the “environment friendly” attribute. This study hopes to shift the paradigm of companies as it will try to establish the emotional attachment of consumers to product attributes related to the environment.
