제주 종달리패총 유적에서 출토된 동물 유물의 해부학적 연구

The classification of bony pieces which were excavated from Jongdali archaeological site in Jeju was studied. The total number of bone remains were 81 pieces, in which 31 pieces were classified into animal bones. The animal species consisted of Cervus spp., Sus scrofa, Bos taurus and Equus caballus. This finding suggests that the major fauna in this peroid(B.C. 100 - A.D. 100) is wild boar, deer, horse and cattle.
마우스에서 사염화탄소로 유발된 급성 간독성에 대한 EDTA 및 EGTA의 보호효과

This study investigated the protective effects of ethylene glycol-bis(${\beta}$-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA), an extracellular calcium chelator, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), which chelates calcium and most metal ions, against carbon tetrachloride ($CCl_4$)-induced acute hepatotoxicity in mice. Mice were treated with EGTA or EDTA at a dose of 20 (low) or 100 mg/kg (high) subcutaneously 1h before $CCl_4$ administration. The mice were fasted and sacrificed 18h after $CCl_4$ treatment. Blood samples were collected from the carotid artery by decapitation under light ether anesthesia. Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), triglyceride (TG), and cholesterol levels were measured. Malondialdehyde (MDA) production was determined as an index of lipid peroxidation in the liver. The liver, kidneys, and spleen were weighed. We also evaluated the histopathological changes in the liver in each group. The relative weights of the liver were significantly higher in the $CCl_4$-treatment group than in the normal group, except in the high-EDTA treatment group. EGTA and EDTA treatment caused a significant decrease in serum ALP, ALT, and AST levels. Of all of the doses of EGTA and EDTA tested, the high-EDTA dose resulted in the most remarkable inhibitory action. The protective effect in the high-EDTA-treatment group was confirmed histopathologically. The low-EGTA-treatment group showed a significant decrease in serum TG and cholesterol levels. Liver MDA levels were significantly decreased in the EGTA (20 mg/kg) and EDTA (20, 100 mg/kg) groups. These results suggest that EDTA, which chelates both calcium and metal ions, confers better protection in $CCl_4$-induced acute liver damage than does EGTA, a calcium chelator.
Expression and localization of endothelial and inducible nitric oxide synthase in bovine uterus

Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) has been reported in uterus. We examined the expression of the NOS isoforms, constitutive endothelial (eNOS) and inducible NOS (iNOS), in bovine uterus by immunohistochemistry. eNOS immunoreactivity was localized predominantly to the endothelial cells that line uterine microvessels and to endometrial glandular epithelial cells, but was barely detectable in endometrial stromal cells. iNOS immunostaining was detected in glandular epithelial and stromal cells in the endometrium and in the endothelial cells of myometrial blood vessels. These findings suggest that both eNOS and iNOS may play important roles in the physiology of the uterus, possibly by generating NO.

The testis and epididymis are important organs of the male reproductive system; the functionis to produce, mature, transport, and store sperm. It is important to understand the localization and expressionof specific proteins based for the studies of its physiological processes. In this study, we investigated theexpression and distribution of galectin-3, one of beta-galactoside-binding proteins, in the testis andepididymis of mouse using western blot and imunohistochemistry. Western blot analysis revealed that theexpression of galectin-3, 29 kDa protein, was low in the testis. In the epididymis, high expression wasdetected in the body and tail part, but moderate expression in the head part. By immunohistochemicalanalysis, we found that positive localization of galectin-3 was detected in some myoid cells and Leydigin the epithelium of epididymis, especially in the epithelium of both body and tail of epididymis. Collectively,these results suggest that galectin-3 is constitutively expressed in the testis and epididymis of mouse withvarying intensity, and the role of galectin-3 in the male reproductive organ may be involved in the specificfunction of its structures.
Trimethyltin에 의한 랫드 해마의 신경세포 사멸과 iNOS의 연관성

Trimethyltin chloride (TMT) has been used as a neurotoxin for inducing brain dysfunction and neuronal death. Neuronal death in the hippocampus by TMT may generate excessive nitric oxide, but there are few studies about nitric oxide synthase enzyme involved in the synthesis of nitric oxide. The purpose of present study is to analyze the TMT toxicity in each region of rat hippocampus. To evaluate the involvement of nitric oxide, we analyzed the effects of aminoguanidine known as a selective inhibitor for inducible nitric oxide synthase on behavioral changes and the hippocampus of rat by TMT toxicity. 6-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were administered with a single dose of TMT (8 mg/kg b.w., i.p.) and the control group was similarly administered with distilled water. TMT + aminoguanidine-treated groups were administered with aminoguanidine (10 mg/kg or 100 mg/kg b.w., i.p.) for 3 days prior to TMT injection. The rats were sacrificed 2 days after TMT administration. In the TMT-treated group, a number of cell losses were seen in CA1, CA3 and the dentate gyrus. In the TMT + aminoguanidine-treated group, neuronal death was seen in CA1 and CA3, but reduced in the dentate gyrus compared to the TMT-treated group. Western blot analysis showed that cleaved caspase-3 expression was increased in the TMT-treated group compared to the control group. However, the expression significantly declined in the TMT + aminoguanidine-treated group. The present findings suggest that inducible nitric oxide synthase is involved in neuronal death induced by TMT.

The importance of milk for the growth and health of a newborn offspring is well known. Milkcontains immunoglobulin G (Ig G), Ig A, lactoperoxidase, lactoferin, cytokines, and growth factors.Osteopontin, one of the multifunctional proteins, is secreted by macrophages, T cel, and epithelial cells.bovine milk have not been clarified. The aim of this study was to observe the expression of osteopontin,in bovine milk during the lactation period or bovine mamary glands..Western blot analysis detected thatosteopontin was expressed in bovine milk whey and mamary glands. The expression level of osteopontinin colostrum whey was higher than those in early milk and mature milk whey. Immunohistochemistryshowed that osteopontin was detected in the glandular epithelium and epithelial cels of intralobular ductof mamary glands. These findings suggest that osteopontin transiently shows high expression in colostrumand plays a potential role in the immunological development of breast-fed calves.
제주도 종달리 1819번지 패총에서 출토된 뼈 유물의 분류

Animal bones excavated with earthenware from the shell mound at the Jeju Jongdali 1819 archeological site, where three consecutive chronological layers covering the Neolithic (B.C. 15C-B.C. 10C), early Tamra, and late Tamra periods have been identified, were morphologically classified. The majority of the bones from all three periods were broken or split. The major fauna of the mammalian bones in all periods were Cervus spp., Sus scrofa, and Bos taurus. In the early and late Tamra periods, bones of small animals including Mustela sibirica coreana, Meles meles, Rodentia, and Aves were also found in small number. The excavated bones were from all parts of the animal bodies, including head, trunk, forelimb, and hindlimb. Collectively, these findings suggest that the major fauna from the Neolithic to late Tamra periods consisted of Cervus spp., Sus scrofa, and Bos taurus and that the fauna was dissected and carried to the shell mound site after hunting. Information from the bone remains in the shell mound are useful data for study of the wildlife and domestic animals living during the prehistoric period of Jeju Island.
방사선을 조사한 마우스의 소장 음와세포에서 DNA 수복을 위한 PCNA와 p21의 발현 양상

The irradiation of radioactive ${\gamma}-ray$ induces apoptosis of radiosensitive organs for homeostasis. In this study, we investigated the repair mechanisms for homeostasis in the small intestine after cell damage by $^{60}Co\;{\gamma}-ray$ irradiation. The apoptosis was most frequently observed in the crypt cells of the small intestine after four and six hours by radioactive ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation, and the frequency of apoptosis was proportional to the amount of irradiation. Also, the number of apoptotic cells was coincident with expression pattern of p53. Interestingly, PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) which is engaged in DNA replication and repair was expressed in apoptotic cells of small intestinal crypts. Also, it was observed that cell-cycle regulator p21 which is known to induce cell-cycle arrest is co-expressed in the same apoptotic cells of irradiated small intestinal crypt cells. These findings suggest that the co-expression of PCNA and p21 proteins, which may lead to resistance to DNA damage through cell-cycle arrest is closely associated with repair of damaged gastrointestinal cells after ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation.

This study was undertaken to examine the developmental expression of osteopontin(OPN) in the mouse brain. In Western blotting analysis, the expression of OPN was noted initially at embryonic stage and increased gradually after birth and decreased at postnatal day 60(P60). In immunohistochemistry, OPN expression was found in the interstitial nucleus Cajal and the substantia nigra reticularis in anterior part of the brain and in the inferior olivary complex, the parabrachial nucleus, the facial nucleus, the gigantocellular reticular nucleus, the trigeminal nucleus and the anterior interposed nucleus in posterior part of the brain at P31 and P60. In addition, OPN expression in widespread neurons appeared during the period of neuronal differentiation, increased just after birth and decreased with maturation. These results suggest that OPN contributes to developmental processes, including the differentiation and maturation of specific neuronal populations.
