Although studies on the geographical characteristics of greenhouse farming are not rare, there has been little research focusing on the climatic factors. The main objectives of this study are 1) to analyze the geographical patterns of paprika cultivation which is conducted in greenhouses and 2) to identify the suitable areas by cultivation types in Korea based on the climatic factors. First of all, spatial and attribute data on the individual paprika farm estimates were collected, processed and constructed to a GIS database, which integrates the geo-referenced paprika farm estimates with data on topographic features, land use, and climatic data. As a result of geographic analysis, winter cultivation was adopted mainly in the southern lower plains and summer cultivation was found mostly in the central or southern higher mountainous areas. Especially, it was revealed that the average temperature in January of the winter cultivation areas was about 5℃ higher than that of summer cultivation areas while the average temperature in August of summer cultivation areas was lower about 3℃ than that of winter cultivation areas. Secondly, we analyzed suitable areas for each cultivation type by focusing more on climatic conditions of actual paprika farms. It turned out that the total area suitable for paprika farming was about 12,000km², of which around 87% (in southwestern part in general) was suitable for winter cultivation and 12% (primarily in central or southern higher lands) for the summer cultivation. Among other things, east coast area from Goseong-gun to Uljin-gun was identified as the overlapping area suitable for both winter and summer cultivation. This study is meaningful in that the geographic relationship between facility cultivation practices and climate factors is empirically analyzed. Furthermore, this will provide critical information for decision makers at the various levels of paprika greenhouse cultivation including smart farming.
