Water model experiments were carried out to understand the mixing behavior of reducing agents in molten slag through vortex stirrer, which makes use of a gravitational energy to mix reducing agent in the molten slag without imparting artificial energy. At a water flow rate of 6 L/min vortex was not generated, and a stable vortex was formed when the water flow rate was 7 L/min or higher with the present experimental apparatus. Water level increased linearly with increasing the water flow rate. In the upper vortex region, the vertical and horizontal velocities slightly decreased with increasing the water flow rate, whereas those in the lower vortex region increased remarkably. Accordingly, strong mixing behavior was obtained in the lower vortex region. Owing to the strong centrifugal force, particles move downwards with approaching the funnel wall. When 40 grams of polypropylene particles added to the lower vortex, they were instantaneously mixed well.
분체 CaO 에 의한 용강의 탈황거동 (脫黃擧動) 에 관한 연구

Desulfurization of molten steel was carried out in a high frequency induction furnace at 1550℃. Rates of desulfurization by CaO powder were measured with varing the amount of aluminum as a reducing agent, and were investigated and compared under conditions of the powder injection and top powder. Results showed that the desulfurization rate by the powder injection method was considerably faster than that by the top powder method. Also the rate was increased with increasing the amount of aluminum added. It is interesting to note that product CaS as well as unreacted CaO powder floats immediately after the injection, leaving CaS and CaO free melt. Rate equation for desulfurization was developed to be the first order with respect to sulfur activity when dissolved aluminum and oxygen remain constant, and the desulfurization mechanism was proposed.
CaO 취입용강의 탈황속도에 미치는 Si 첨가 효과에 관한 연구

Desulfurization of molten steel was carried out in a high frequency induction furnace at temperatures between 1550℃ and 1705℃. Rates of desulfurization by CaO powder injection with Ar-gas were measured with varying the amount of silicon added, the initial sulfur content, and the temperature, respectively. Results showed that the desulfurization rate was increased with increasing the amount of silicon and also the temperature. Rate equation for desulfurization was developed to be the 1st order with respect to dissolved sulfur content and also the reaction mechanism was proposed. The apparent activation energy of the reaction was found to be about 40.7㎉/mole.
