Association between ALDH2 Polymorphism and Gastric Cancer Risk in a Korean Population

The association between alcohol and gastric cancer is stronger in East Asians than in other ethnic groups, presumably due to an aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) polymorphism. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between the ALDH2 rs671 polymorphism and gastric cancer in a Korean population. This case-control study included 3,245 hospital patients newly diagnosed with gastric cancer and 8,732 population controls. The ALDH2 rs671 genotype was classified as inactive ALDH2 (GG) or active ALDH2 (GA/AA). The risk of gastric cancer was higher in men with the inactive ALDH2 than in those with active ALDH2 (odds ratio [OR], 1.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09–1.39), whereas no significant association was found between ALDH2 genotype and gastric cancer in women (OR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.99–1.02). In men, the association between ALDH2 genotype and gastric cancer was stronger in current drinkers. Our findings support the previously reported association between inactive ALDH2 and high risk of gastric cancer.
Non-linear Relationship Between Body Mass Index and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Korean Males

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between body mass index (BMI) and severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in Korean males. Methods: This study was conducted on males aged ≥50 years who participated in the 2011 Korean Community Health Survey. LUTS severity was assessed using the Korean version of the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) questionnaire, and was dichotomized as severe (IPSS >19) and non-severe (IPSS ≤19). BMI was divided into 6 categories: <18.5, 18.5-22.9, 23.0-24.9, 25.0-27.4, 27.5-29.9, and ≥30.0 kg/m2. To evaluate the relationship between BMI and LUTS, a survey-weighted multivariate Poisson regression analysis was performed to estimate prevalence rate ratios (PRRs). Age, smoking status, alcohol intake, physical activity, educational level, household income, and comorbidities were adjusted for in the multivariate model. Results: A U-shaped relationship was detected between BMI and severe LUTS. Compared with a BMI of 23.0-24.9 kg/m2, the PRR for a BMI <18.5 kg/m2 was 1.65 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.35 to 2.02), that for a BMI of 18.5-22.9 kg/m2 was 1.25 (95% CI, 1.09 to 1.44), that for a BMI of 25.0-27.4 kg/m2 was 1.20 (95% CI, 1.00 to 1.45), that for a BMI of 27.5-29.9 kg/m2 was 1.11 (95% CI, 0.83 to 1.47), and that for a BMI ≥30.0 kg/m2 was 1.85 (95% CI, 1.18 to 2.88). Conclusions: This study showed that both high and low BMI were associated with severe LUTS.
The Temporal Evolution of Thermal Instability in Fluid Layers Isothermally Heated from Below

The temporal development of thermal disturbances in the fluid layer heated isothermally from below is investigated, based on propagation theory. This theory is examined by using scaling. To examine the behavior of thermal instability the mean-field approximation is employed and resulting equations are solved by Galerkin method. The stability criteria to mark the onset of convective instability are newly suggested as the intersection point of the growth rate of averaged temperature with that of its fluctuation. The resulting critical time is close to that derived from propagation theory. By considering the nonlinear effects, the characteristic times to represent the detection time of manifest convection and also to exhibit the minimum Nusselt number are discussed.

n-octanol-인산-물의 삼성분계에서 분산상의 인산 액적이 연속상의 n-octanol속을 낙하하면서 물질이동이 일어날 때, 액적의 운동 양상과 계의 물리적 특성이 물질이동계수에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 종말속도는 인산 농도가 증가할수록 물질이동이 없는 계에서 도출된 Klee와 Treybal식과 큰 차이를 나타내었다. 계의 특성에 의해 저농도에서 연속상의 물질이동계수에 관한 무차원 해석의 결과 다음식을 얻었다. Sh_c=0.26Re^(1.13)_cSc^(0.6)_c 고농도의 경우 위의 식을 이용하여 분산상의 물질이동계수를 구하여 비교한 결과, 침투 이론에 의한 값과 대체로 일치함을 보였다. The mass transfer of phosphoric acid from a single water drop falling in a continuous phase of n-octanol and the related drop dynamics were studied experimentally. For the drops of low acid concentration the terminal velocity agreed well with the prediction of Klee and Treybal. But its deviation was increased with the increase in acid concentration. The mass transfer coefficient in the continuous phase was well represented by Sh_c=0.26Re^(1.13)_cSc^(0.6)_c Also it was found that the dispersed phase coefficient for the drops of high concentration is favorably predicted by the model based on the penetration theory.
