Unraveling the Paradoxical Action of Androgens on Muscle Stem Cells

Androgens act in almost all tissues throughout the lifetime and have important roles in skeletal muscles. The levels of androgens increase during puberty and remain sustained at high levels in adulthood. Because androgens have an anabolic effect on skeletal muscles and muscle stem cells, these increased levels of androgens after puberty should lead to spontaneous muscle hypertrophy and hyperplasia in adulthood. However, the maintenance of muscle volume, myonuclei number per myofiber, and quiescent state of satellite cells in adulthood despite the high levels of androgens produces paradoxical outcomes. Our recent study revealed that the physiological increase of androgens at puberty initiates the transition of muscle stem cells from proliferation to quiescence by the androgen-Mindbomb1-Notch signaling axis. This newly discovered androgen action on skeletal muscles underscores the physiological importance of androgens on muscle homeostasis throughout life. This review will provide an overview of the new androgen action on skeletal muscles and discuss the paradoxical effects of androgens suggested in previous studies.

성형수술 전 환자의 스트레스 감소에 향기요법과 라벤더 차음용이 미치는 영향

성형수술은 재건의 목적이 아닌 미용상의 목적인 경우 신체의 이상이 없음에도 환자의 외형이나 자존감을 호전시키기 위해 시행되는 것이고, 성형수술 후 신체적인 호전에 대한 불만족이 나타났을 경우를 미리 생각하면 다른 수술 환자들이 갖는 불안보다 더 많은 심리적 불안과 스트레스를 경험하게 된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 향기요법과 차음용을 성형수술 전 환자에게 적용하여 실험 적용 전 후 의 심리 상태, 맥박수, 혈압, 코티솔 호르몬의 수치 변화를 확인하였다. 그 결과 심리측정지수, 맥박수, 코티솔 호르몬 수치가 감소하여 아로마 추출물을 이용한 향기요법과 차음용이 성형수술 전 환자의 스트레스 감소에 효과가 있음을 확인하였다.

W/O 마이크로 에멀전법에 의한 구형실리카 분말의 제조 및 특성

희석된 soluble sodium silicate를 비이온 계면활성제(Span) W/O 마이크로 에멀전에 첨가하여 구형 실리카와 TiO2가 내재된 구형실리카를 얻었다. 이 때 수용액상은 ammonium hydrogen carbonate였고, sodium silicate/증류수의 비는 0.5이고 유기용매/수용액 비는 3이었다. 물과 알코올로 세척된 분말은 SEM측정을 위해서 120℃에서 건조되었다. 세척된 분말은 900℃와 1200℃에서 열처리 되었다. 열처리와 결정화에 의한 입자모양의 변화없이 평균입경이 5㎛인 실리카분말을 얻었다. TiO2내재시 투과율 및 반사율 면에서 순수한 구형실리카에 비해 우수한 특성을 보였다. Spherical particles of SiO2 and TiO2-embeded spherical silica particles are obtained by addition of diluted soluble sodium silicate in nonionic surfactants(Span) W/O microemulsions, in which aqueous phase was ammonium hydrogen carbonate solution, the sodium silicate/water ratio(W) was 0.5 and oil/aqueous ratio was 3. Products which had washed using water, alcohol were dried at 120℃ for making SEM measurements. Thermal treatment of washed silica samples were carried out at 900℃ and 1200℃. Silica particles of mean size 5㎛ were obtained at room temperature without changing their shape due to thermal treatment and crystallization. TiO2-embeded spherical silica particles were superior to silica particles in view of transmittance and reflectance.

Proximal Interphalangeal Joint (PIPJ) Arthrodesis for Treating PIPJ Osteoarthritis in a Horse

A 2-year-old, 440 kg, thoroughbred gelding showed a lameness grade of 3 out of 5, as well as swelling and heating on the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ). Periarticular new bones due to the arthritis were observed on performing radiography and ultrasonography. PIPJ arthrodesis was performed under general anesthesia. With the PIPJ open, the articular cartilage was removed by using curette, chisel, and mallet. Arthrodesis was performed with a PIP plate and two additional transarticular cortex screws inserted in lag fashion. A cast was placed over the limb distal from the proximal metatarsal bone. At 6 months after surgery, complete union of the PIPJ was confirmed by radiography, and the incision site was well closed. Based on the outcome, a PIP plate with two additional transarticular cortex screws inserted in lag fashion is recommended as a method for treating osteoarthritis of the PIPJ in horses.

디킨슨과 예이츠의 시에서 드러나는 죽음의 타자성

디킨슨과 예이츠는 각각 다른 방식으로 죽음에 대한 그들의 고민과 사 색을 시에 담고 있다. 디킨슨은 죽음을 낯선 존재의 갑작스러운 마주침처럼 묘사하며 그 순간을 관찰한다. 예이츠는 죽음을 두려워하기도 하지만 초월적인 인간을 제시하거 나 영혼의 불멸과 환생을 죽음과 관련짓기도 한다. 두 시인은 죽음을 사색하며 삶에 미치는 영행을 모색한다. 죽음에 대한 두 시인의 고민은 레비나스의 죽음의 타자성과 연결할 수 있다. 죽음은 자아가 경험한 적 없는 영역으로 이동하고 변화하는 순간으로 서 죽음에 대하여 자아가 그 어떤 영향력도 가지지 못하는 수동성으로의 전환이다. 디 킨슨과 예이츠는 죽음과 마주한 인간의 무력함과 신비함을 시에서 표현한다. 두 시인 은 간접적으로 사유할 수밖에 없는 죽음의 한계를 비유와 상징으로 표현하면서 죽음 의 절대적 타자성을 시에 담는다. Dickinson and Yeats contemplate death deeply and broaden their perception of death. Dickinson describes the moment of death as a sudden encounter of a strange being and leaves death in an obscure state. In his poetry dealing with death, Yeats mourns the dead or fears death. Sometimes he shows that a transcendent human being overcomes death. The two poets’ thoughts on death are related to the concept of death alterity that Levinas argued. Dickinson and Yeats recognize that death is beyond our influence, and express human helplessness in face of mysterious death, using various figurative methods and symbols in their poems.

디킨슨과 예이츠의 신

이 논문은 디킨슨과 예이츠의 신에 대한 관점을 비교하고 분석한다. 동 시대인들이 기존 종교에서 제시하는 신을 아무런 의심 없이 무조건적으로 받아들였던 반면에 두 시인은 기독교 교리와 제도에 회의하고 저항하는 태도를 보인다. 그들은 자 신만의 독특한 자아로 신과 인간, 세계에 대한 시각을 가진다. 디킨슨은 신에 대한 태 도와 신의 이름하에 자행되는 폭력 및 고통을 가볍게 여기지 않았고 자아와 교회, 그 리고 신앙에 대해 끊임없이 회의하며 신을 향하여 저항과 비판적인 태도를 취한다. 예 이츠는 기독교 정신과 교리를 그만의 신비적이고 불가해한 관점에서 해석한다. 기독교 라는 이유로 현실에서 당연시되고 나아가 평범함으로까지 여겨지는 종교의 형식과 제 도에 대한 반발이다. 디킨슨과 예이츠는 신앙의 이름으로 헌신된 기독교 종교의 방법 을 맹목적으로 받아들이지 않는다. 또한 그들은 주관적 인식을 통해 하나님과 자아 사 이의 관계를 깊이 사고한다. This essay compares and analyzes Yeats’s and Dickinson’s concept of God. While their contemporaries unconditionally accept God as presented in Christianity, the two poets confront and resist Christian doctrines and its institution. Each has a vision of God, man, and the world. Dickinson does not take lightly the violence and suffering under the name of God, constantly questioning the self, the church, and faith. She resists and takes a critical attitude toward God; Christianity and its institution taken for granted at the time; Christian doctrines, in which God is the center of absolute sovereignty. In the meantime, Yeats focuses on the subconscious of humanity, thus interpreting the Christian spirit and doctrine from his own occult and mysterious viewpoint. Both Yeats and Dickinson make great efforts to illustrate the correspondence and relationship between God and self through subjective perception.

Spinal cord abscess in pork carcasses

This is a case report of spinal cord abscess in pork carcasses. We have detected 7 cases with spinal cord abscesses in abattoir from January to October 2008. It may occur from either direct extension or hematogenos infection. Four cases were presumed by hematogenous infection because of no external wound, and 3 may be caused by direct extension. The infection is a result of external wound in 3 pigs and is a result of hematogenous spread in 4 pigs. The incidence rate of spinal cord abscess in sows is higher than that in pigs

니체의 관점에서 본 예이츠의 귀족주의적 비전

예이츠는 혼란스럽던 당대 아일랜드의 현실에서 영웅적 기상을 지닌 엘리 트적 인물의 역할에 주목한다. 니체의 초인사상, 창조적 예술정신과 새로운 가치관, 삶에 대한 관점 등은 예이츠의 시세계에 더 넓은 지평을 열어주었다. 니체에 영향을 받은 예 이츠의 귀족주의는 귀족주의적 삶의 양식을 실천함으로써 정치적 이데올로기와 물질적 인 속박에서 벗어나 내면의 자율성을 키워나가게 한다. 그의 귀족주의를 재산과 혈통으 로 결정되는 위계질서가 아닌 개개인의 내면을 고양할 수 있는 하나의 가치체계로 이해 할 때 더 나은 인간의 자유와 다양성을 이룰 수 있는 계기가 된다. 그것은 하나의 인위 적인 예술적 이상향으로 마련된 것이 아니라 현실적 삶 속에 귀족주의적 삶의 영역을 마 련하여 예술과 학문의 가치를 공동체의 구성원 모두가 나누어 갖자는 의도를 지닌다. The later Yeats was much influenced by Nietzsche’s philosophical thoughts. And his concept of aristocracy focuses on the role of elite figures with a heroic spirit in Ireland’s chaotic situation. Yeats promotes an individual’s inner autonomy from the bondage of political ideology and materialism. If his aristocracy is considered a value system that can elevate an individual’s inner self, rather than a hierarchy determined by property or bloodline, it can be the basis of gaining more human freedom and diversity. His aristocracy, which is not prepared as an artificial artistic utopia, is intended to provide the aristocratic realm in real life and to share the values of art and science among all members of the community.
