Vol.21 No.3

The purpose of this research is to examine lifestyles and spatial features of the elderly households who live in senior welfare houses that is one type of welfare facilities in South Korea. Given interwoven relationships between a house and those who live in, living space often represents life patterns of dwellers. This is especially true in the case of the senior welfare house. Despite the rising aging population, the number of the welfare house is not enough to meet increasing demand. Furthermore, studies on the senior welfare house are rare in the discipline of architecture. These reasons lead this paper to focus on lifestyles and spatial features of it. In order to figure out the living conditions and life patterns of elderly households in the senior welfare house, this research employed ethnographic research and conducted individual interviews with them. This research suggests several findings. First, residents in the welfare house desired to walk and work out for staying healthy. Second, they also want to have moderate works to do without burden. Third, ways of working and using common space in facilities provide us to figure out the characteristics of their life patterns. By suggesting these findings, this research contributes to a better understanding of elderly housing for future studies.

Re-examination of Criticism on the "Uniformity" of Korean Apartments

변나향,Byun, Nahyang The Korean Housing Association 2015 한국주거학회 논문집 Vol.26 No.6

Current criticism regarding the "uniformity" of Korean apartments has shown not only tendencies of emotional and unscholarly criticism, but also lack of academic discourse. They tend to stay at the common-sense level and be quite subjective without supporting facts. This research began with questioning the phenomenon of seeing Korean apartments as an object of negative criticism. The research questions for this study are: 1. Of the living space of so-called apartment houses, what elements should be called uniform?; 2. How should the implications of the findings be interpreted? In this context, this study aims to reinterpret criticisms on the uniformity of apartments from a new point of view. First, literature review is done to examine characteristics of Korean apartments in the social-cultural, economic, and physical contexts. Next, existing non-academic, abstract criticisms are classified into three trends, to show that the way of understanding architectural spaces by those criticisms are limited and weighted towards visual perceptions focused only on the shape of architectural structures. Finally, it is argued that the viewpoints of space and residents' experience should be treated as important for the reinterpretation of criticisms on the uniformity. This is validated through presenting relevant cases such as changes of space uses, diversified lifestyles being accepted, and the expansion of living space.

Vol.32 No.4

Community facilities in regional communities are important public facilities that provide services and support residents’ lives. Recently, community facilities have been created as a ‘mixed-use’ form, wherein multiple facilities and programs such as administration, culture, and daycare are placed in one building. The purpose of this study is to analyze the users’ satisfaction levels pertaining to such community facilities regarding the physical environment of the facilities and their use. As research methods, previous studies on changes in functions of community facilities and satisfaction levels of the environment have been considered and a survey was conducted on users of three community facilities. Using factor analysis and ANOVA statistical analysis as analysis methods, factors by detailed investigation items, the correlation between the items, and significance of the results of satisfaction level by facilities were analyzed.

Vol.33 No.1

Low-rise residential areas occupy most of the residential zones of a city. There exist numerous residential environment-related problems which arise as these low-rise residential areas become superannuated. There has been continuing debate over the issues of residential area regeneration and recovery, and the matter is important in urban policy. This is well-demonstrated by the fact that the concepts of neighborhood, residential and living have been reflected in ‘new deal’ urban regeneration projects. The purpose of the present study is to examine the composition and configuration characteristics of low-rise residential areas, with a focus on superannuated low-rise residential areas in Cheongju city, and to realize local residential area regeneration. The study first conducts a literature review to examine the local spatial configuration and composition, centered on continuous physical structure. This is followed by an analysis of residential area composition and configuration through the blocks, lots, streets and buildings in the selected target site. The outcome of analysis will be used to discuss what considerations can be made in establishing a regeneration strategy for local residential areas.

Vol.35 No.3

This study focused on the generational change of elderly people in the future based on the changes of aging background and household structure. After 2025, when the growth rate of aging rapidly becomes prominent, the generation born before 1961, the baby boomers who were in their youth after the country’s liberation, will replace the current elderly generation. This means that the characteristics and values of living of the elderly will change and not pass on to the future, and that the demand for housing will also be different. The purpose of this study is to predict the future elderly housing demand and to find out the issues of housing support for elderly people and necessary institutional support items. For this purpose, the preliminary elderly people are surveyed and analyzed for their present housing condition, perception of old age, housing plan, welfare facilities and demand for living services. The results of this study are meaningful in laying the groundwork for predicting the demand for housing and living support of the elderly in the future and proposing suggestions and preparing related systems.

Vol.19 No.6

Japan, a country in which a regionally-inclusive care system has been established, offers diversified residence types in which the elderly population can reside. Changes in the keynotes of policies and systems from the ‘securing’ of residences for the elderly to ‘daily life design’ and ‘operational management’ of residences for the elderly demonstrate the necessity for provision of physical environments as well as the stable life. This study is aimed at discerning the deliberate implications for application of such concepts in Korea by analyzing the spatial plan of the residence examples for the elderly in Japan with the goal of practicing comfortable aging in place by residing continuously within the local community. How the residences for elderly are planned and organized, and how the physical plans for linkage with the local area have been suggested were examined. Results of this study indicate that the proposed allocation of buildings on the land, each room, and strategy and characteristics of the composition of common areas are the prerequisites for continuity within the local community and overall wellbeing in daily life.
