      • Emergency department visits due to pesticide poisoning in South Korea, 2006-2009

        <P><I>Objectives.</I> The objective of this study is to estimate the numbers and rate of emergency department visits in South Korea that are the result of pesticide poisoning and to describe their epidemiologic characteristics. <I>Materials and methods.</I> Data collected from the National Emergency Department Information System were used to estimate the number of emergency department visits due to pesticide poisoning in South Korea for the period spanning 2006 through 2009. Emergency department visits for pesticide poisoning were defined by ICD-10 codes (T60.0-T60.9). National estimates and their 95% confidence intervals were calculated per 100 000 population. <I>Results.</I> Among the 65 877 total poisoning-related emergency department visits in the data, 11 985 (18.2%) were emergency department visits resulting from pesticide poisoning. During the study period, the annual average rate of emergency department visits for pesticide poisoning was 26.8 per 100 000 population. Intentional pesticide poisoning (51.4%) was more frequent than unintentional. The fatality rate from intentional pesticide poisoning was also higher than that from unintentional or cases where the intention was unknown. In terms of age-specific rates of emergency department visits for pesticide poisoning, they increased with age, as did the gap between men and women. <I>Conclusions.</I> This study provide estimates for emergency department visits due to pesticide poisoning at the national level and suggests that pesticide poisonings, both intentional and unintentional, require significant public health interventions in South Korea.</P>

        멀티코어 구조가 컴퓨터하드웨어 분야의 주류를 이루게 되었음에도 불구하고, 멀티코어 구조의 이점을 최대한 활용하기 위한 명시적 병렬 프로그래밍 모델과 컴파일러 기술은 하드웨어의 발전 속도에 비해 뒤쳐져있다. 이를 개선하기 위해 고안된 스트림 프로그래밍 패러다임은 멀티코어 구조를 활용하기에 적합한 모델로 주목받고 있으며, 이미 이미지 프로세싱과 오디오 시스템, 네트워크와 같은 분야에서 사용되고 있다. 스트림 프로그램의 주된 문제점은 어떻게 단위 작업인 actor 를 병렬 하드웨어에 효율적으로 할당할 것인가인데, 이를 위해서 actor 를 프로파일하고 각 actor 들의 효율적 데이터 통신을 위한 장치를 제공하는 것은 아주 중요한 작업이다. 본 논문에서는 actor 의 실행시간을 추측하기 위해 고안된 효율적이고 정확한 프로파일링 기법과 새로운 데이터 통신을 위한 버퍼 모델을 제시하고자 한다.

        A Pilot Project for the Expansion of the External Quality Assessment Program in Transfusion Medicine: Anti-D Titer Test

        Background: Many test items in transfusion medicine that are still not included in the Korean Association of External Quality Assessment Service. We performed a pilot project of anti-D titer test for the expansion of proficiency testing program in transfusion medicine. Methods: Proficiency testing materials with low (BBS2-21-01) and high (BBS2-21-02) anti-D titer were sent to 53 laboratories that agreed to participate in the pilot project for the 2nd Korean Association of External Quality Assessment Service on Transfusion Medicine in 2021. The results were entered on the website of the Korean Association of External Quality Assessment Service (http://eqas.keqas.org/). Results: A total of 47 laboratories submitted the results. For BBS2-21-01, the intended response of anti-D titer was 4–16 for tube technique with antihuman globulin (AHG) and 16–64 for column agglutination technique (CAT) with AHG. Meanwhile, for BBS2-21-02, the intended response was 8–32 for tube technique with AHG and 32–128 for CAT with AHG. The proportion of acceptable results was 90.9%–95.5% for tube technique with AHG and 95.8%–100.0% for CAT with AHG. Conclusions: The pilot project of anti-D titer test was successfully performed. This project will be expanded to a biannual proficiency testing program for anti-D antibody titer in the Korean Association of External Quality Assessment Service starting in 2022.

      • 형태 정보와 방향 정보를 이용한 2단계 상표 영상 검색

        본 논문에서는 윤곽선(edge) 기반의 형태 정보와 웨이브렛 변환(wavelet transform)에 의한 방향(direction) 정보를 사용하는 2단계 상표 영상 검색 시스템을 제안한다. 1 단계에서는 후보 상표 영상을 추출하기 위해 영상의 전반적인 정보로 원 상표 영상(original trademark image)을 웨이브렛 변환하여 얻은 X, Y 방향 고주파(high frequency)성분으로부터 구한 방향 정보와 영상의 윤곽선에 대해 모멘트를 구하는 향상된 불변 모멘트(improved invariant moment)를 이용한다. 2 단계에서는 후보 영상들에 대해 영상의 세부 정보인 윤곽선 각도(edge angle)와 윤곽선 반지름(edge radius) 정보를 추출하여 유사도 측정 알고리즘을 통해 결과 영상을 산출하게 된다. 본 상표 영상 검색 시스템은 문자 색인으로는 색인이 용이 하지 않은 기하학적도형 상표 영상만을 사용하였다. 본 시스템에서는 색상과는 상관없는 특징인 형태정보와 방향 정보만을 이용하므로 같은 색상 구성을 가진 유사 영상뿐만 아니라, 유사하지만 바탕이 반전된 영상이나 색상이 다른 유사 영상에 대해서도 바르게 검색할 수 있으며, 각 특징을 일반화해줌으로 이동 · 회전 · 크기 변화에도 불변하는 견고성을 가진다. 또한 효율적인 검색을 위해 2단계의 구조를 사용하였으며, 각 단계마다 계산량을 줄여 검색 시간을 감소시키도록 설계되었다. This paper proposes a Two-Stage trademark images retrieval system using shape features which are edge-based shape information and direction information from wavelet transform. In the first stage, global features of trademark images are extracted for selecting candidate images. The global features used in this stage are improved invariant moments and direction information using X high frequency, Y high frequency from wavelet transform. In the second stage, local features, edge angle and edge radius are extracted for final similar images. This system uses not color but shape and direction. So it can retrieve accurately not only similar images with same color pattern but also similar images with reversed foreground & background and similar images with different color. In order to build a trademark retrieval system with robustness and effectiveness, we use Two-Stage feature extraction and matching structure considering reduction method of retrieval time in each stage and feature generalization.

        Choice of ABO Group for Blood Component Transfusion in ABO-Incompatible Solid Organ Transplantation: A Questionnaire Survey in Korea and Guideline Proposal

        The number of ABO-incompatible solid organ transplantations (ABOi SOTs) has markedly increased worldwide since the early 2000s. We investigated the choice of ABO group for blood component transfusion in ABOi SOT. We conducted a survey by e-mailing a questionnaire to blood bank specialists at 77 major hospitals in Korea, among whom 34 responded to the survey. In major ABOi SOT, for red blood cells (RBCs), the recipient’s type (70.6%) was the most common choice, followed by group O (29.4%); for platelets, group AB (50.0%) was the most common choice, followed by the donor type (38.2%); for plasma, group AB (55.9%) was the most common choice, followed by the donor type (32.4%). In bidirectional ABOi SOT, for RBCs, the recipient’s type (55.9%) was the most common choice, followed by group O (44.1%); for platelets and plasma, group AB was the most common choice (94.1% and 97.1%, respectively). The policies for transfusion in ABOi SOT were diverse. We suggest a guideline on the choice of ABO group for transfusion in ABOi SOT to secure patient health and enable an efficient use of blood components.

      • Depressive symptoms and severity of acute occupational pesticide poisoning among male farmers

        <P><B>Objectives</B></P><P>Limited evidence suggests the association between severity of acute occupational pesticide poisoning and depressive symptoms in farmers. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between occupational pesticide exposure and depressive symptoms among male farmers in South Korea.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>A nationwide sampling survey of male farmers was conducted in South Korea. A total of 1958 male farmers were interviewed in 2011. Severity of occupational pesticide poisoning was evaluated according to symptoms, types of treatment and number of pesticide poisonings per individual. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale. A survey logistic regression model was used to estimate the multivariate OR and 95% CIs.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Among total farmers, 10.4% (n=197) reported depressive symptoms. After controlling for potential confounders, occupational pesticide poisoning in the previous year was positively associated with the risk of depressive symptoms (OR=1.61; 95% CI 1.10 to 2.34). Cases of more severe pesticide poisoning, such as moderate- or severe-symptom cases (OR=2.81; 95% CI 1.71 to 4.63), outpatient or hospitalisation cases (OR=2.52; 95% CI 1.15 to 5.53), and multiple poisoning cases (OR=1.82; 95% CI 1.19 to 2.76) showed higher risks of depressive symptoms than did milder cases. Among the pesticides causing the poisonings, paraquat dichloride was found to be a significant predictor of depressive symptoms. No significant association was found with cumulative lifetime pesticide application and depressive symptoms.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Our findings suggest that the risk of depression appears to be related to the severity of symptoms of poisoning, type of care received and the number of previous episodes of acute poisonings.</P>
