        Unveiling the impact of lysosomal ion channels: balancing ion signaling and disease pathogenesis

        Ion homeostasis, which is regulated by ion channels, is crucial for intracellular signaling. These channels are involved in diverse signaling pathways, including cell proliferation, migration, and intracellular calcium dynamics. Consequently, ion channel dysfunction can lead to various diseases. In addition, these channels are present in the plasma membrane and intracellular organelles. However, our understanding of the function of intracellular organellar ion channels is limited. Recent advancements in electrophysiological techniques have enabled us to record ion channels within intracellular organelles and thus learn more about their functions. Autophagy is a vital process of intracellular protein degradation that facilitates the breakdown of aged, unnecessary, and harmful proteins into their amino acid residues. Lysosomes, which were previously considered protein-degrading garbage boxes, are now recognized as crucial intracellular sensors that play significant roles in normal signaling and disease pathogenesis. Lysosomes participate in various processes, including digestion, recycling, exocytosis, calcium signaling, nutrient sensing, and wound repair, highlighting the importance of ion channels in these signaling pathways. This review focuses on different lysosomal ion channels, including those associated with diseases, and provides insights into their cellular functions. By summarizing the existing knowledge and literature, this review emphasizes the need for further research in this field. Ultimately, this study aims to provide novel perspectives on the regulation of lysosomal ion channels and the significance of ion-associated signaling in intracellular functions to develop innovative therapeutic targets for rare and lysosomal storage diseases.

      • Facile one-pot transformation using structure-guided combustion waves of micro-nanostructured β-Bi<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> to α-Bi<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>@C and analysis of electrochemical capacitance

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Precise phase-transformation can facilitate control of the properties of various materials, while an organic coating surrounding inorganic materials can yield useful characteristics. Herein, we demonstrate facile, selective manipulation of micro-nanostructured bismuth oxide (Bi<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>) for phase transformation from microflower-like <I>β</I>-Bi<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> to micropill-like <I>α</I>-Bi<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, with carbon-coating layer deposition, using structure-guided combustion waves (SGCWs). Microflower-like <I>β</I>-Bi<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> are synthesized as core materials and nitrocellulose is coated on their surfaces for the formation of core-shell hybrid structures of Bi<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> and chemical fuel. The SGCWs, which propagate along the core-material and fuel interfaces, apply high thermal energy (550–600°C) and deposit incompletely combusted carbonaceous fuel on the microflower-like <I>β</I>-Bi<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> to enable transformation to <I>α</I>-phase and carbon-coating-layer synthesis. SGCW-induced improvements to the electrochemical characteristics of the developed micropill-like <I>α</I>-Bi<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>@C, compared with the microflower-like <I>β</I>-Bi<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, are investigated. The enhanced stability from the <I>α</I>-phase Bi<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> and micropill-like structures during charge-discharge cycling improves the specific capacitance, while the carbon-coating layers facilitate increased electrical conductivity. SGCW-based methods exhibit high potential for selective phase manipulation and synthesis of carbon coatings surrounding micro-nanomaterials.         경남 일부 지역 여자 대학생의 상하체 균형 계측치와 운동 습관

        경남지역 모 대학교에 재학 중인 여자 대학생 212명을 대상으로 인체 계측과 건강에 관련된 습관에 대하여 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 총대상자의 평균 연령은 20.7 세, 신장은 161.8 ㎝, 체중은 53.5 ㎏이었으며, 비만도는 98.4%이었으며 체질량 지수는 20.6 ㎏/㎡이었고 허리-엉덩이 둘레 비율은 0.80이었다. 이와 같은 신체 계측치는 한국인의 정상 범위에 속하는 것이지만, 조사 대상자의 63.7%가 상체가 하체에 비하여서 불균형적으로 약한 체형인 것으로 나타났다. 이들 대상자를 불균형적으로 상체가 약한 군(UU, n=135)으로 하고 대조군으로써 상ㆍ하체가 균형인 군(BU, n=77)의 두 군으로 나누어서 측정 결과치를 비교 분석하였다. 체중, 비만도, 체질량지수, 허리-엉덩이 둘레비가 BU군에 비하여서 UU군이 유의적으로 낮았다. 체단백짙, 체지방, 체무기짙량도 역시 UU군에서 유의적으로 낮았다. 상완근육 둘레를 측정한 결과, UU군이 BU군에 비하여 유의적으로 낮았다. 운동의 규칙적 수행여부를 알아본 결과 UU군의 1.5%, BU군에서 7.8%가 ‘운동을 규칙적으로 하고 있다’고 답하였다. 한편 ‘운동을 전혀 하고 있지 않다’라고 답한 비율이 UU군과 BU군에서 각각 55.5%, 31.2%로써, 운동을 하지 않는 경우가 UU군에서 1.8배 정도 많았다. 운동을 할 경우에 얼마나 오래하는지에 대한 질문에 UU군의 38.4%와 BU군의 35.8%가 30분 이하로 운동을 한다고 답하여서, 여자 대학생이 운동을 한다 하더라도 운동 시간이 충분하지 않은 것으로 사료된다. 본 연구 조사 결과, 상체가 하체에 비하여서 불균형적으로 약한 여자 대학생이 총 조사 대상자의 63.7%이나 되었으며, 이들의 운동 습관에 문제가 있는 것으로 나타나서 운동을 습관화하여 꾸준히 하고 특히 상체와 팔 근육을 발달시키는 운동을 실천하는 것이 필요하다고 사료된다. 아울러 여자 대학생만을 대상으로 하여 체형의 올바른 인식을 위한 교육의 필요성이 절실하며, 신체 부위의 균형을 고려한 운동 프로그램 개발이 시급하다고 생각한다. This study was carried out to examine anthropometric parameters and related habits in female college students. Mean age, height, and body weight of the subjects in total (n=212) were 20.7 yrs, 161.8 ㎝, and 53.5 ㎏, respectively. Anthropometric parameters were measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Mean degree of obesity, body mass index (BMI), and waist-hip ratio (WHR) were 98.4%, 20.6 ㎏/㎡, and 0.80 respectively. Surprisingly, 63.7% of the subjects showed unbalanced weak upper bodies compared to their lower bodies. Therefore, they were divided into two groups: unbalanced weak upper body group (UU, n=135) and balanced upper body groups (BU, n=77). Bodyweight, degree of obesity, BMI, and WHR in the UU group were significantly lower than those in the BU group. Amounts of body protein, body fat, and body mineral in the UU group were also significantly lower than those of the BU group. Mid-arm muscle circumference of the UU group (18.5±0.8 ㎝) was significantly lower than those of BU group (20.4±1.2 ㎝), although mid-arm circumference of the UU group was not significantly different compared to those of the BU group. On a questionnaire on exercise habits, 1.5% of the UU group and 7.8% of the BU group answered that they exercised regularly, and 55.5% of the UU group and 31.2% of the BU group reported that they never exercised (p<0.01). Even in the subjects who exercised, the duration of the exercise was not sufficient because 38.4% of the UU group and 35.8% of the BU group answered that they exercised for less than 30 min. In conclusion, interventions in exercise habits may be needed for female college students who have unbalanced weak upper bodies.

        Acute contralateral reexpansion pulmonary edema within a few hours of pleural drainage: a case report

        We report a case of an 83-year-old male patient with massive tuberculous pleural effusion. Percutaneous drainage was performed following a diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy. Fifteen minutes into the procedure, the patient’s condition deteriorated suddenly, necessitating mechanical ventilatory support. A chest radiograph performed after intubation showed partial collapse of the affected lung with pneumothorax. Despite sufficient air drainage and lung expansion, the patient’s oxygen demand remained high. A repeat chest radiograph performed 30 minutes after chest tube insertion revealed partial expansion of the affected lung and severe infiltrative patterns in the unaffected lung, suggesting contralateral reexpansion pulmonary edema.

        붕괴 저수지의 형태학적 특성 분석

        본 연구에서는 전국에 분포되어 있는 17,313개의 저수지의 기본적인 제원을 분석하고, 특히, 붕괴 피해가 발생한 저수지의 형태학적 특성 및 저수량(S), 만수면적(A), 제당높이(H) 간의 관계를 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 즉, 저수지의 11가지 제원 항목에 대하여 히스토그램을 작성하여 계급구간별 빈도에 대한 분포특성을 확인하였다. 또한, 깊이에 의해 저수지를 분류하기 위하여 형태지수(morphology index)를 이용하였으며, S-A-H와 S-A관계 분석을 토대로 각 관계의 계수값을 이용해 저수지의 특성을 파악하였다. 여기서, S-A-H의 계수값은 저수량과는 반비례하고, 계수값이 크면 저수량이 작다. S-A의 계수값은 저수량(S)과 비례하고, 계수값이 작으면 저수량이 작다. 주어진 저수지 제원의 항목들을 토대로 군집 분석을 수행하였으며, 군집 분석 결과, A부터 E까지 총 5개로 군집화 되었다. A군은 7,714개, B군은 6,053개, C군은 2,633개, D군은 745개, E군은 168개로 구분되었다. 형태지수는 A > B > C > D > E 순서로 낮았으며, S-A-H관계의 계수값은 A > B > C > E > D 순서로 높았다. S-A관계에 대한 계수값은 A > B > D > C > E 순서로 낮았다. 또한, 21개의 붕괴된 저수지에 대해 군집된 결과를 보면, A(14) > B(4) > C(2) > D(1) > E(0) 순서로 군집 되었다. 저수지의 수심이 얕고 저수량이 작은 저수지의 경우 붕괴될 확률이 높게 내재 되어 있었다. 따라서, 본 연구의 결과를 토대로 붕괴가 주로 발생하는 저수지의 특성을 파악함으로써 저수지 관리, 운영 및 발생할 수 있는 재난의 사전 대비 등을 위하여 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. The purpose of this study is to analyze the basic specifications or items of 17,313 reservoirs distributed throughout Korea and in particular, to establish the relationships among the morphological characteristics of the reservoirs. In addition, the morphology index, the storage (S)-area of full water (A)-levee height (H) (S-A-H) relationship, and the storage(S)-area of full water (A) (S-A) relationship were determined for collapsed reservoirs. In this study, histograms for 11 parameters, such as storage capacity, area of full water, levee height, and basin area, were plotted, and the distributions of the reservoir parameters were examined. The morphology index was used to classify the reservoirs based on the depth, and the coefficient values of the relationships of S-A-H and S-A were used to compare S with both A and H or only A. The coefficient value of S-A-H was inversely proportional to S, and when the coefficient value was high, the storage was small. The coefficient value of S-A was proportional to S, and when the coefficient value was small, the storage wassmall. Cluster analysis was performed based on the given items to determine the characteristics of all the reservoirs and only the collapsed reservoirs. From the cluster analysis results, the reservoirs were divided into five groups: A, B, C, D, and E. There were 7,714 (14) in Group A, 6,053 (4) in B, 2,633 (2) in C, 745 (1) in D, and 168 (0) in E for all the reservoirs and collapsed reservoirs (with the values of the collapsed reservoirs in parenthesis). The morphological indexes werelow in the order of A > B > C > D > E, and the coefficient values of S-A-H were high in the order of A > B > C > E > D. The coefficient values of S-A were low in the order of A > B > D > C > E. Based on the clustered analysis results for 21 collapsed reservoirs, the reservoirs were clustered in the order of A (14) > B (4) > C (2) > D (1) > E (0). A reservoir with shallow water depth and small storage capacity has an inherent probability of collapsing. Therefore, the results of this study are useful for reservoir management and operation, as well as for the prevention of reservoir collapse.

        Analysis of Factors Affecting Emergency Physicians’ Attitudes toward Deceased Organ & Tissue Donation

        Background: This study aimed to investigate differences in knowledge, and attitudes toward deceased organ and tissue donation of emergency physicians. Additionally, we analyzed factors affecting the attitudes toward deceased organ and tissue donation. Methods: We conducted a survey of specialists and residents registered with the Korean Society of Emergency Medicine in December 2020. The respondents’ sex, age, position, personal registration for organ donation, experience of soliciting organ donation, participation in related education, knowledge, and attitude about brain death organ donation, and attitude toward stopping life-sustaining treatments were investigated. According to the characteristics of the respondents (specialists or residents, experience and education on organ and tissue donation), their knowledge and attitude toward deceased organ donation were compared. Stepwise hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to investigate the factors affecting the attitudes toward deceased organ and tissue donation. Results: Of the total 428 respondents, there were 292 emergency medicine specialists and 136 medical residents. Specialists and those who registered or wished to donate organs had higher knowledge and attitude scores regarding deceased organ and tissue donation. Those who had experience recommending organ and tissue donation more than 6 times had higher knowledge scores on deceased organ and tissue donation and higher overall scores in attitude. Those who received education from the Korean Organ Donation Agency had higher knowledge scores. Specialists, and those who wished to donate or had registered as organ donors and had a higher life-sustaining treatment attitude score and knowledge about deceased organ and tissue donation, had more positive attitudes toward deceased organ and tissue donation. Conclusion: For more potential deceased organ and tissue donors to be referred for donation, there should be continuous education for emergency physicians on brain-dead organ and tissue donation-related knowledge and procedures. In addition, institutional or systematic improvements that can lead to organ donation when deciding on the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment should be considered.

      • 스마트폰을 이용한 물체의 높이 측정 기법

        스마트폰에 장착된 센서들을 사용하면 다양한 물리량을 측정할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 스마트폰을 사용하여 물체의 높이를 추정하는 기법을 제시한다. 제안 기법은 물체를 여러 위치에서 관측하여 그 높이를 추정하는 것이다. 각 각의 관측점에서는 스마트폰의 위치센서와 방향센서를 사용하여 관측점의 위치와 관측 방향을 측정한다. 이러한 관측값을 기반으로 각 관측점에서 물체로 향하는 3차원 시선벡터를 도출하고 그것들 간의 최근접점을 계산하여 물체의 높이를 추정한다. 제안 기법을 모바일엠으로 구현하고 건축물 높이를 측정하는 실험을 통해 성능을 시험하였다.
