antitumor activity of crude saponin mixture obtained from Luffa tuberosa (Roxb.) (Fam;Cucurbitaceae) hairy roots (CSLT) in mice transplanted with Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) was investigated.elevation in tumor-free survival and a highest number of survivors were observed after administration of CSLT(300 .g/kg), which was considered as an optimum dose for its antineoplastic action. The mean survival time(MST) for this dose was approximately 47.1± 0.74 d, when compared with 19.0± 0.36 d of untreated control.Administration of 30 .g/kg CSLT resulted in 130% long-term increased survival time. The measurement ofbody weight, tumor volume, packed cell volume, viable and non-viable count indicated the efficacy of CSLT intumor-bearing mice, there was a significant recovery in hematological profiles, and there was depletion in lipidnormal levels. The CSLT was found to be devoid of conspicuous short-term toxicity in the mice when animalswere intraperitoneally injected with 250, 500, 750 and 1000 .g/kg bodyweight. The treated mice showedconspicuous toxic symptoms only at a dose of 1500 .g/kg. Mortality of the animals was monitored up to 14 dpost drug treatment, 1/7th of the LD50 dose has been considered for the optimal antineoplastic activity.KeywordsLuffa tuberosa (Roxb.) unripe whole fruits of Luffa tuberosa (Roxb.) or Momordica tuberosa (Roxb) Cogn.(Cucurbitaceae) were evaluated for the antidiabetic and hyperlipidemic potential in streptozotocin (STZ) induceddiabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by administration of intra-peritoneal injection of streptozotocin at a dose of55 mg/kg body weight. After the induction of diabetes aqueous extract of L.tuberosa (AELT) was administeredorally at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg. body weight/day for a period of 14 days. The Fasting blood glucose (FBG)levels, serum insulin levels, changes in body weight, food and liquid intake were measured. In diabetic rats, theAELT exhibited significant reduction in blood glucose levels. Biochemical assay of plasma total cholesterol (TC),triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc),after the extract supplementation was confirmed by significant reduction in the levels of above mentionedhyperlipidemic indicators. This study focus on the efficacy of L.tuberosa fruits for the management ofexperimental STZ induced diabetic rats and provides the scientific basis of ancient herbal therapy and use of thesefruits as vegetable.KeywordsLuffa tuberosa (Roxb.), streptozotocin, antihyperglycemic activity, antihyperlipidemic activity

The present study was carried out to investigate the antidiabetic and antioxidant effect of methanolic extract of Berberis tinctoria leaves (MEBT), in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Oral administration of MEBT extract (150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg) for a period of 14 days. Blood glucose levels, body weight food and liquid intake were measured on every $5^{th}$ day over a period of 14 days. In diabetic rats, MEBT at the dose of 150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg body weight resulted in significant reduction in blood glucose levels. The study was further investigated to determine antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic potential of MEBT in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. These results suggest that the MEBT possess antidiabetic activity and is able to ameliorate biochemical damages in STZ induced diabetic rats and the results were found to be in a dose dependent manner.

The present study was carried out to investigate the antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant effect of chloroform and methanol extract of whole plant of Ichnocarpus frutescens (CEIF and MEIF) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Administration of CEIF and MEIF orally at the dose of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight resulted in significant (P < 0.01) reduction in blood glucose levels. The body weights were significantly (P < 0.001) reduced in STZ-induced diabetic rats when compared to normal rats while the extracts significantly (P < 0.01) prevented the decrease in body weight in the CEIF and MEIF treated rats. The study was further undertaken to evaluate the antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic potential of CEIF and MEIF in STZ-induced diabetic rats. The increased levels of lipid peroxidation in the liver tissues of diabetic rats were significantly reverted back to normal levels and a significant increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and the level of reduced glutathione in the liver of diabetic rats after the treatment with CEIF and MEIF was noticed. These results clearly indicate that CEIF and MEIF exhibit significant antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic and in vivo antioxidant activity in STZ-induced diabetic rats and the results were found to be in a dose dependent manner
