Health Monitoring of High-rise Building with Fiber Optic Sensor (SOFO)
Mikami, Takao,Nishizawa, Takao Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat Korea 2015 International journal of high-rise buildings Vol.4 No.1
Structural health monitoring is becoming more and more important in the domain of civil engineering as a proper mean to increase and maintain the safety, especially in the land of earthquakes like Japan. In many civil structures, the deformations are the most relevant parameter to be monitored. In this context, a monitoring technology based on the use of long-gage fiber optic deformation sensor, SOFO is being applied to a 33-floors tall building in Tokyo. Sensors were installed on the $2^{nd}$ floor's steel columns of the building on May 2005 in the early stage of the construction. The installed SOFO sensors were dynamic compatible ones which enable both static and dynamic measurements. The monitoring is to be performed during the whole lifespan of the building. During the construction, static deformations of the columns had been measured on a regular basis using a reading unit for static measurement and dynamic deformation measurements were occasionally conducted using a reading unit for dynamic measurement. The building was completed on August 2006. After the completion, static and dynamic deformation measurements have been continuing. This paper describes a health monitoring technology, SOFO system which is applicable to high-rise buildings and monitoring results of a 33-floors tall building in Tokyo from May 2005 to October 2010.

A new configuration of ILQ servo system based on dynamic output feedback is presented together with its output feedback gain matrices by proper choice of a certain design parameter of the ILQ design method. Noticing its same feedback structure as that of I-PD servo system for the particular case of SISO systems with relative order two, this renewed ILQ design method is then applied to FRIT based I-PD controller tuning for a linear second order SISO system with time delay. A numerical design example is also shown to verify the usefulness of this tuning method.

TAKAO NAKAGAWA,Hiroshi Shibai,HIDEHIRO KANEDA,Kotaro Kohno,Hideo Matsuhara,Hiroyuki Ogawa,TAKASHI ONAKA,Peter Roelfsema,Toru Yamada 한국천문학회 2017 天文學論叢 Vol.32 No.1
We present project updates of the next-generationinfrared space mission SPICA (Space Infrared Telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics)as of November 2015. SPICA isoptimized for mid- and far-infrared astronomy with unprecedented sensitivity, which will be achievedwith a cryogenically cooled (below 8 K), large (2.5~m) telescope. SPICA is expected to address a number ofkey questions in various fields of astrophysics, ranging from studies of the star-formation history in theuniverse to the formation and evolution of planetary systems. The international collaboration framework of SPICA has been revisited. SPICA under the new framework passed the Mission Definition Review by JAXA in 2015. A proposal under the new framework to ESA is being prepared. The target launch year in the new framework is 2027/28.
R&D Sustainability of Biotech Start-ups in Financial Risk
Takao Fujiwara 아시아기술혁신학회 2018 Asian Journal of Innovation and Policy Vol.7 No.3
This paper’s objective is to draw a decision guideline to continue research and development (R&D) investments in biotech start-ups facing the “Valley of Death” syndrome ¬- a long negative profit period during a financial crisis. The data include financial indices as Net income, Revenues, Total stockholders’ equity, Cash & equivalents, and R&D expenses of 18 major biotech companies (nine in negative profit and nine positive, in FY2008) and 15 major pharmaceutical corporations as benchmarks both in FY2008 and in FY2016 derived from the US SEC Database, EDGAR. A first methodology dealing with real options analysis assumes Total stockholders’ equity as a growth option. And a second methodology, Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis, is applied to test the probability relationship between the Total stockholders’ equity and the R&D expenses in these three groups. This study confirms that Total stockholders’ equity can play the role of a call option to support continuing R&D investments even in negative profits.
Arithmetic Circuit Optimization in Finite Word Length Approximation of Arbitrary Functions
Takao Sasaki,Koji Kotani,Hisamishi Toyoshima 대한전자공학회 2008 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2008 No.7
In digital circuit design using a hardware description language, some elementary functions and user defined functions can not be expressed directly. In such cases, the target function is approximated as a polynomial to be implemented by additions and multiplications. If an approximation error exceeds the permissible one, it can be corrected with a look-up table (LUT). However, considering discrete and nonlinear relation between the approximation error and the circuit area, optimization of reducing the total hardware cost would be more complex. In this research, for an arbitrary function, we propose the optimization technique of minimizing the hardware cost. The proposed method starts with multiple initial solutions based on two hardware models. Furthermore, for optimization algorithm, tabu search (TS) is used, and it is parallelized to make a global search.
Complex Network Theory and Agent-Based Modeling
Takao TERANO 한국경영과학회 2016 한국경영과학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2016 No.10
In this talk, I will present a new model of micro-macro social learning model for a classical economic problem “the emergence of money”. We propose Doubly Structural Network (DSN) Model, which consists of one global social network of agents and internal networks that represent agents’ recognition. DSN model enables us to describe the emergence of proto-money as a self-organization process of the common recognition of exchangeability. We conduct an analytical method and a numerical approach into bifurcation phenomena of a new mean-field dynamics derived from this DSN Model. The main contribution of the paper is summarized as follows. (1) The proto-money can emerge from commodities without distinctive properties. (2) The social network degree is a definitive factor for non-/single-/multiple-emergence of proto-money. (3) The variance of the social network degree (existence of hubagents) also affects emergence of proto-money.
Multi-criteria shape design of crane-hook taking account of estimated load condition
Takao Muromaki,Kazuyuki Hanahara,Yukio Tada 국제구조공학회 2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.51 No.5
In order to improve the crane-hook‟s performance and service life, we formulate a multi-criteriashape design problem considering practical conditions. The structural weight, the displacement at specifiedpoints and the induced matrix norm of stiffness matrix are adopted as the evaluation items to be minimized. The heights and widths of cross-section are chosen as the design variables. The design variables areexpressed in terms of shape functions based on the Gaussian function. For this multi-objective optimizationproblem with three items, we utilize a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, that is, the multi-objectiveParticle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO). As a common feature of obtained solutions, the side views aretapered shapes similar to those of actual crane-hook designs. The evaluation item values of the obtaineddesigns demonstrate importance of the present optimization as well as the feasibility of the proposed optimaldesign approach.
