A book with nutrition theme can be used as an interesting tool to teach nutrition to children. The purpose of the study was to search children"s books with nutrition themes, and evaluate the content and the quality of the books. Fifteen books were found on the internet and in a bookstore. The main subjects were cooking (8 books), weight control (5 books), and food culture (2 books). Most books regarding cooking provides recipes but they do not provide enough information on food groups, nutrients, and food sanitation. Most books regarding weight control provides desirable food habits, calories in foods, and excercise, but they need to give more information on appropriate method to assess children"s obesity. Most books were evaluated as "The messeges were clear." "The illustration matched with the theme." "The illustration was attractive." However, most books were not written by a nutrition professional, indicating the reliability of the books was not ensured. Therefore, more books with various nutrition themes should be written for children by nutrition professionals, which can be used to help children develop healthy eating behavior.

Long-Term Outcome of Unilateral Acoustic Neuromas With or Without Hearing Loss: Over 10 Years and Beyond After Gamma Knife Radiosurgery

        Park Hye Ran,Jeong Sang Soon,Kim Jung Hoon,Myeong Ho Sung,Park Hyun Joo,Park Kwang Hyon,Park Kawngwoo,Yoon Byung Woo,Park Suyeon,Kim Jin Wook,Chung Hyun-Tai,Kim Dong Gyu,Paek Sun Ha 대한의학회 2023 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.38 No.40

Background: Since the long-term outcomes of 162 patients who underwent gamma knife radiosurgery (GKS) as an initial or adjuvant treatment for acoustic neuromas (ANs) with unilateral hearing loss were first reported in 1998, there has been no report of a comprehensive analysis of what has changed in GKS practice. Methods: We performed a retrospective study of the long-term outcomes of 106 patients with unilateral sporadic ANs who underwent GKS as an initial treatment. The mean patient age was 50 years, and the mean initial tumor volume was 3.68 cm3 (range, 0.10–23.30 cm3 ). The median marginal tumor dose was 12.5 Gy (range, 8.0–15.0 Gy) and the median follow-up duration was 153 months (range, 120–216 months). Results: The tumor volume increased in 11 patients (10.4%), remained stationary in 27 (25.5%), and decreased in 68 patients (64.2%). The actuarial 3, 5, 10, and 15-year tumor control rates were 95.3 ± 2.1%, 94.3 ± 2.2%, 87.7 ± 3.2%, and 86.6 ± 3.3%, respectively. The 10-year actuarial tumor control rate was significantly lower in the patients with tumor volumes of ≥ 8 cm3 (P = 0.010). The rate of maintaining the same Gardner-Robertson scale grade was 28.6%, and that of serviceable hearing was 46.4%. The rates of newly developed facial and trigeminal neuropathy were 2.8% and 4.7%, respectively. The patients who received marginal doses of less than 12 Gy revealed higher tumor control failure rates (P = 0.129) and newly occurred facial or trigeminal neuropathy rates (P = 0.040 and 0.313, respectively). Conclusion: GKS as an initial treatment for ANs could be helpful in terms of tumor control, the preservation of serviceable hearing, and the prevention of cranial neuropathy. It is recommended to perform GKS as soon as possible not only for tumor control in unilateral ANs with hearing loss but also for hearing preservation in those without hearing loss.

Transdifferentiation of α-1,3-galactosyltransferase knockout pig bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells into pancreatic β-like cells by microenvironment modulation

        Ullah Imran,Lee Ran,Oh Keon Bong,황성수,Kim Youngim,Hur Tai-Young,Ock Sun A 아세아·태평양축산학회 2020 Animal Bioscience Vol.33 No.11

Objective: To evaluate the pancreatic differentiation potential of α-1,3-galactosyltransferase knockout (GalTKO) pig-derived bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) using epigenetic modifiers with different pancreatic induction media. Methods: The BM-MSCs have been differentiated into pancreatic β-like cells by inducing the overexpression of key transcription regulatory factors or by exposure to specific soluble inducers/small molecules. In this study, we evaluated the pancreatic differentiation of GalTKO pig-derived BM-MSCs using epigenetic modifiers, 5-azacytidine (5-Aza) and valproic acid (VPA), and two types of pancreatic induction media – advanced Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (ADMEM)-based and N2B27-based media. GalTKO BM-MSCs were treated with pancreatic induction media and the expression of pancreas-islets-specific markers was evaluated by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, Western blotting, and immunofluorescence. Morphological changes and changes in the 5'-C-phosphate-G-3' (CpG) island methylation patterns were also evaluated. Results: The expression of the pluripotent marker (POU class 5 homeobox 1 [OCT4]) was upregulated upon exposure to 5-Aza and/or VPA. GalTKO BM-MSCs showed increased expression of neurogenic differentiation 1 in the ADMEM-based (5-Aza) media, while the expression of NK6 homeobox 1 was elevated in cells induced with the N2B27-based (5-Aza) media. Moreover, the morphological transition and formation of islets-like cellular clusters were also prominent in the cells induced with the N2B27-based media with 5-Aza. The higher insulin expression revealed the augmented trans-differentiation ability of GalTKO BM-MSCs into pancreatic β-like cells in the N2B27-based media than in the ADMEM-based media. Conclusion: 5-Aza treated GalTKO BM-MSCs showed an enhanced demethylation pattern in the second CpG island of the OCT4 promoter region compared to that in the GalTKO BM-MSCs. The exposure of GalTKO pig-derived BM-MSCs to the N2B27-based microenvironment can significantly enhance their trans-differentiation ability into pancreatic β-like cells.

Ginsenoside Rg1 attenuates mechanical stress-induced cardiac injury via calcium sensing receptorrelated pathway

        Mei-Li Lu,Jing Wang,Yang Sun,Cong Li,Tai-Ran Sun,Xu-Wei Hou,Hong-Xin Wang 고려인삼학회 2021 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.45 No.6

Background: Ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1) has been well documented to be effective against various cardiovasculardisease. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of Rg1 on mechanical stress-inducedcardiac injury and its possible mechanism with a focus on the calcium sensing receptor (CaSR)signaling pathway. Methods: Mechanical stress was implemented on rats through abdominal aortic constriction (AAC)procedure and on cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts by mechanical stretching with Bioflex CollagenI plates. The effects of Rg1 on cell hypertrophy, fibrosis, cardiac function, [Ca2þ]i, and the expression ofCaSR and calcineurin (CaN) were assayed both on rat and cellular level. Results: Rg1 alleviated cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis, and improved cardiac decompensation inducedby AAC in rat myocardial tissue and cultured cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts. Importantly, Rg1treatment inhibited CaSR expression and increase of [Ca2þ]i, which similar to the CaSR inhibitor NPS2143. In addition, Rg1 treatment inhibited CaN and TGF-b1 pathways activation. Mechanistic analysis showedthat the CaSR agonist GdCl3 could not further increase the [Ca2þ]i and CaN pathway related proteinexpression induced by mechanical stretching in cultured cardiomyocytes. CsA, an inhibitor of CaN,inhibited cardiac hypertrophy, cardiac fibrosis, [Ca2þ]i and CaN signaling but had no effect on CaSRexpression. Conclusion: The activation of CaN pathway and the increase of [Ca2þ]i mediated by CaSR are involved incardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis, that may be the target of cardioprotection of Rg1 against myocardialinjury.

Preliminary Study on Natural Killer Cell Activity for Interfer-on-Gamma Production after Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for Brain Tumors

        Park, Kawngwoo,Jeong, Sang Soon,Kim, Jung Hoon,Chung, Hyun-Tai,Lee, Eun Jung,Moon, Hyo Eun,Park, Kwang Hyon,Kim, Jin Wook,Park, Hye Ran,Lee, Jae Meen,Lee, Hye Ja,Kim, Hye Rim,Cho, Yong Hwan,Paek, Sun The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2022 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.65 No.6

Objective : High-dose radiation is well known to induce and modulate the immune system. This study was performed to evaluate the correlation between clinical outcomes and changes in natural killer cell activity (NKA) after Gamma Knife Radiosurgery (GKS) in patients with brain cancer. Methods : We performed an open-label, prospective, cross-sectional study of 38 patients who were treated with GKS for brain tumors, including metastatic and benign brain tumors. All of the patients underwent GKS, and blood samples were collected before and after GKS. NKA was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit, to measure interferon-gamma (IFNγ) secreted by ex vivo-stimulated NK cells from whole blood. We explored the correlations between NK cell-produced IFNγ (NKA-IFNγ) levels and clinical parameters of patients who were treated with GKS for brain tumors. Results : NKA-IFNγ levels were decreased in metastatic brain tumor patients compared to those with benign brain tumors (p<0.0001). All the patients who used steroid treatment to reduce brain swelling after GKS had an NKA-IFNγ level of zero except one patient. High NKA-IFNγ levels were not associated with a rapid decrease in brain metastasis and did not increase after GKS. Conclusion : The activity of NK cells in metastatic brain tumors decreased more than that in benign brain tumors after GKS.

Neuregulin 1 Controls Glutamate Uptake by Up-regulating Excitatory Amino Acid Carrier 1 (EAAC1)

        Yu, Ha-Nul,Park, Woo-Kyu,Nam, Ki-Hoan,Song, Dae-Yong,Kim, Hye-Sun,Baik, Tai-Kyoung,Woo, Ran-Sook American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Bi 2015 The Journal of biological chemistry Vol.290 No.33

<P>Neuregulin 1 (NRG1) is a trophic factor that is thought to have important roles in the regulating brain circuitry. Recent studies suggest that NRG1 regulates synaptic transmission, although the precise mechanisms remain unknown. Here we report that NRG1 influences glutamate uptake by increasing the protein level of excitatory amino acid carrier (EAAC1). Our data indicate that NRG1 induced the up-regulation of EAAC1 in primary cortical neurons with an increase in glutamate uptake. These <I>in vitro</I> results were corroborated in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of mice given NRG1. The stimulatory effect of NRG1 was blocked by inhibition of the NRG1 receptor ErbB4. The suppressed expression of ErbB4 by siRNA led to a decrease in the expression of EAAC1. In addition, the ablation of ErbB4 in parvalbumin (PV)-positive neurons in PV-ErbB4−/− mice suppressed EAAC1 expression. Taken together, our results show that NRG1 signaling through ErbB4 modulates EAAC1. These findings link proposed effectors in schizophrenia: NRG1/ErbB4 signaling perturbation, EAAC1 deficit, and neurotransmission dysfunction.</P>
