A convex version of multivariate adaptive regression splines
Martinez, D.L.,Shih, D.T.,Chen, V.C.P.,Kim, S.B. North-Holland Pub. Co ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2015 Computational statistics & data analysis Vol.81 No.-
Multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) provide a flexible statistical modeling method that employs forward and backward search algorithms to identify the combination of basis functions that best fits the data and simultaneously conduct variable selection. In optimization, MARS has been used successfully to estimate the unknown functions in stochastic dynamic programming (SDP), stochastic programming, and a Markov decision process, and MARS could be potentially useful in many real world optimization problems where objective (or other) functions need to be estimated from data, such as in surrogate optimization. Many optimization methods depend on convexity, but a non-convex MARS approximation is inherently possible because interaction terms are products of univariate terms. In this paper a convex MARS modeling algorithm is described. In order to ensure MARS convexity, two major modifications are made: (1) coefficients are constrained, such that pairs of basis functions are guaranteed to jointly form convex functions and (2) the form of interaction terms is altered to eliminate the inherent non-convexity. Finally, MARS convexity can be achieved by the fact that the sum of convex functions is convex. Convex-MARS is applied to inventory forecasting SDP problems with four and nine dimensions and to an air quality ground-level ozone problem.

We have recently developed betalain-richbeetroot (Beta vulgaris) dye (betalain) to be used in foodproducts. Betalain (30–300 mg/kg) intraperitoneal (i.p.)treatment diminished carrageenan (100 lg/paw)-inducedpaw edema and neutrophil migration to the paw skin tissue. Betalain (100 mg/kg) treatment by subcutaneous or peroral routes also inhibited the carrageenan-induced pawedema. Importantly, the post-treatment with betalain(100 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly inhibited carrageenan- andcomplete Freund’s adjuvant (10 ll/paw)-induced pawedema. Betalain (100 mg/kg) also reduced carrageenan(500 lg/cavity)-induced recruitment of total leukocytes, including mononuclear cells and neutrophils, as well asincreasing vascular permeability in the peritoneal cavity. Furthermore, betalain significantly reduced carrageenaninducedsuperoxide anion, tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-a) and interleukin (IL)-1b levels in the peritonealfluid, as well as augmenting IL-10 levels. Therefore, thiscompound presents prominent anti-inflammatory effect oncarrageenan-induced paw edema and peritonitis by reducingthe production of superoxide anion and the cytokinesTNF-a and IL-1b, in addition to increasing IL-10 levels. These results suggest that betalain shows therapeuticpotential that could be utilized in the treatment of inflammation-associated diseases.

Pea protein-alginate microcapsules with or without a chitosan coating and containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus R0011 and L. helveticus R0052 were produced by extrusion and tested for survivability during storage and in an in vitro gastrointestinal environment. Both microcapsule formulations provided significant protection for cells incubated in synthetic stomach juice at 37oC for 2 h, followed by 3 h in simulated intestinal fluid, relative to non-encapsulated bacteria. However, evaluation of cell viability during 9 weeks of storage at room temperature revealed that chitosan coating significantly improved microcapsule performance compared to non-coated microcapsules. Refrigerated storage had no negative impact on the microcapsule protection ability of both types of microcapsules. Notably, chitosan-containing microcapsules showed much higher bacterial survival counts during challenge tests even after storage. Moreover, the addition of chitosan to the microcapsule formulation did not increase the microcapsule size.

Neutron capture on ^(209)Bi produces either an isomeric state ^(210m)Bi with a half life of 3×10^6 years, or the ground state ^(210g)Bi which decays with a half life of 5 days to the alpha emitter ^(210)Po. Therefore the neutron capture cross section ratio ^(209)Bi(n,γ) ^(210m)^(Bi)/^(210g)Bi plays an important role in predicting the short- and long-term radio-toxicity produced by ^(209)Bi under neutron irradiation. This ratio is dependent on the neutron energy. We have measured this ratio for cold neutrons at the cold neutron beam facility of the Budapest Neutron Centre by observing the population of the ground- and the metastable state using high resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy. The same technique hasbeen used at the pulsed white neutron source GELINA of the IRMM, Geel in combination with the neutron time-of-flight technique. Results for the neutron-energy dependent branching ratio will be presented. In addition we performed simulations using a statistical decay code.

Background Incisional hernia is a common complication following visceral organ transplantation. Transplant patients are at increased risk of primary and recurrent hernias due to chronic immune suppression and large incisions. We conducted a retrospective review of patients with a history of liver or kidney transplantation who underwent hernia repair to analyze outcomes and hernia recurrence. Methods This is a single center, retrospective review of 19 patients who received kidney and/or liver transplantation prior to presenting with an incisional hernia from 2011 to 2017. All hernias were repaired with open component separation technique (CST) with biologic mesh underlay. Results The mean age of patients was 61.0±8.3 years old, with a mean body mass index of 28.4±4.8 kg/m2, 15 males (78.9%), and four females (21.1%). There were seven kidney, 11 liver, and one combined liver and kidney transplant patients. The most common comorbidities were hypertension (16 patients, 84.2%), diabetes (9 patients, 47.4%), and tobacco use (8 patients, 42.1%). Complications occurred in six patients (31.6%) including hematoma (1/19), abscess (1/19), seroma (2/19), and hernia recurrence (3/19) at mean follow-up of 28.7±22.8 months. With the exception of two patients with incomplete follow-up, all patients healed at a median time of 27 days. Conclusions This small, retrospective series of complex open CST in transplant patients shows acceptable rates of long-term hernia recurrence and healing. By using a multidisciplinary approach for abdominal wall reconstruction, we believe that modified open CST with biologic mesh is a safe and effective technique in the transplant population with complex abdominal hernias.
