Antitumor Activity and Antioxidant Role of Ichnocarpus frutescensAgainst Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma in Swiss Albino Mice

        Deepak K Dash,Siva S Nayak,Soma Samanta,Tirtha Ghosh,Tarun Jha,Bhim C Maiti,Tapan K Maity 한국생약학회 2007 Natural Product Sciences Vol.13 No.1

plant Ichnocarpus frutescens (Linn) R.Br. (Family-Apocynaceae) has been indicated for thethe possible antitumor activity and antioxidant role of Ichnocarpus frutescens in the mice transplanted withEhrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC). The chloroform and methanol extract of whole plant of Ichnocarpus frutescens(CEIF and MEIF) were administered intraperitoneally at the dose of 150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg, body weight perday for 7 days after 24 h of tumor inoculation in mice. Treatment with CEIF at the dose of 150 mg/kg and300 mg/kg remarkably decreased the tumor volume, packed cell volume, viable cell count and increased thekg. Further the EAC mice treated with CEIF and MEIF showed significant decrease in the level of lipidperoxidation and significant increase in the level of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione (GSH), superoxidedismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), however the decreasing and increasing capacity of CEIF was less in bothdoses as compared to MEIF. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the chloroform and methanol extactof Ichnocarpus frutescens exhibit significant antitumor and antioxidant activity in EAC bearing mice.Key wordsIchnocarpus frutescens, Ehrlich ascites carcinoma, antitumor activity, in vivo antioxidant activity.

Antineoplastic Activity of Crude Saponin Mixture from the Roots ofLuffa tuberosa (Roxb.) in Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma Bearing Mice

        Veerendra C. Yeligar,Murugesh K.,Deepak Dash,Siva S. Nayak,Bhim C. Maiti,Tapan K. Maity 한국생약학회 2006 Natural Product Sciences Vol.12 No.4

antitumor activity of crude saponin mixture obtained from Luffa tuberosa (Roxb.) (Fam;Cucurbitaceae) hairy roots (CSLT) in mice transplanted with Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) was investigated.elevation in tumor-free survival and a highest number of survivors were observed after administration of CSLT(300 .g/kg), which was considered as an optimum dose for its antineoplastic action. The mean survival time(MST) for this dose was approximately 47.1± 0.74 d, when compared with 19.0± 0.36 d of untreated control.Administration of 30 .g/kg CSLT resulted in 130% long-term increased survival time. The measurement ofbody weight, tumor volume, packed cell volume, viable and non-viable count indicated the efficacy of CSLT intumor-bearing mice, there was a significant recovery in hematological profiles, and there was depletion in lipidnormal levels. The CSLT was found to be devoid of conspicuous short-term toxicity in the mice when animalswere intraperitoneally injected with 250, 500, 750 and 1000 .g/kg bodyweight. The treated mice showedconspicuous toxic symptoms only at a dose of 1500 .g/kg. Mortality of the animals was monitored up to 14 dpost drug treatment, 1/7th of the LD50 dose has been considered for the optimal antineoplastic activity.KeywordsLuffa tuberosa (Roxb.) • Effect of Ichnocarpus frutescens extract on antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant status in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Dash, Deepak K,Ghosh, Tirtha,Yeligar, Veerendra C,Murugesh, K,Nayak, Siva S,Maiti, Bhim C,Maity, Tapan K Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Research Center 2007 Oriental pharmacy and experimental medicine Vol.7 No.3

The present study was carried out to investigate the antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant effect of chloroform and methanol extract of whole plant of Ichnocarpus frutescens (CEIF and MEIF) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Administration of CEIF and MEIF orally at the dose of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight resulted in significant (P<0.01) reduction in blood glucose levels. The body weights were significantly (P<0.001) reduced in STZ-induced diabetic rats when compared to normal rats while the extracts significantly (P<0.01) prevented the decrease in body weight in the CEIF and MEIF treated rats. The study was further undertaken to evaluate the antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic potential of CEIF and MEIF in STZ-induced diabetic rats. The increased levels of lipid peroxidation in the liver tissues of diabetic rats were significantly reverted back to normal levels and a significant increase in activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and the level of reduced glutathione in the liver of diabetic rats after the treatment with CEIF and MEIF was noticed. These results clearly indicate that CEIF and MEIF exhibit significant antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic and in vivo antioxidant activity in STZ-induced diabetic rats and the results were found to be in a dose dependent manner.
