<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this work, for the first time, we systematically evaluated the temperature-dependent long-term stability of Na-doped SrSiO<SUB>3</SUB> super ionic conductors. The total conductivity of the Sr<SUB>0.6</SUB>Na<SUB>0.4</SUB>SiO<SUB>2.8</SUB> (40SNS) was monitored <I>in situ</I> by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The conductivity of the 40SNS at 700°C degraded within 1h due to the crystallization of Na<SUB>2</SUB>Si<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB>. However, at 450°C, the initial conductivity of the 40SNS was firmly maintained for 260h without any observable phase transition. These results demonstrate the existence of a threshold temperature regime that suppresses the crystallization kinetics of the amorphous phase of Na-doped SrSiO<SUB>3</SUB> materials.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

<P>The etiological agents of streptococcosis were isolated from diseased olive flounder collected on the Jeju island of Korea. A total of 151 bacterial isolates were collected between 2003 and 2006. The isolates were examined using various phenotypic and proteomic analyses, including sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), immunoblotting, and glycoprotein assays. In addition, isolates were grown on blood agar to assess hemolytic activity, and biochemical assays were performed using the API20 Strep kit. Our results revealed that all isolates were nonmotile, Gram-positive cocci that displayed negative catalase and oxidase activities. Multiplex PCR assays revealed that 43% and 57% of the isolates were Streptococcus iniae and Streptococcus parauberis, respectively. These results were consistent with those of the SDS-PAGE and immunoblot analyses using whole-cell lysates of bacterial isolates. Significant differences were observed with respect to the Voges-Proskauer, pyrrodonyl arylamidase, alkaline phosphatase, and hemolytic activities of the S. iniae and S. parauberis isolates. Isolates of S. iniae displayed uniform profiles in the immunoblot and glycoprotein assays; however, immunoblot assays of S. parauberis isolates (using a chicken IgY antibody raised against a homologous isolate) revealed three distinct antigenic profiles. Our findings suggest that S. parauberis and S. iniae are endemic pathogens responsible for the development of streptococcosis in olive flounder.</P>
Clinical Presentation and Outcomes of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in the Republic of Korea

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>From May to July 2015, the Republic of Korea experienced the largest outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outside the Arabian Peninsula. A total of 186 patients, including 36 deaths, had been diagnosed with MERS-coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection as of September 30th, 2015.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>We obtained information of patients who were confirmed to have MERS-CoV infection. MERS-CoV infection was diagnosed using real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction assay.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The median age of the patients was 55 years (range, 16 to 86). A total of 55.4% of the patients had one or more coexisting medical conditions. The most common symptom was fever (95.2%). At admission, leukopenia (42.6%), thrombocytopenia (46.6%), and elevation of aspartate aminotransferase (42.7%) were observed. Pneumonia was detected in 68.3% of patients at admission and developed in 80.8% during the disease course. Antiviral agents were used for 74.7% of patients. Mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and convalescent serum were employed for 24.5%, 7.1%, and 3.8% of patients, respectively. Older age, presence of coexisting medical conditions including diabetes or chronic lung disease, presence of dyspnea, hypotension, and leukocytosis at admission, and the use of mechanical ventilation were revealed to be independent predictors of death.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>The clinical features of MERS-CoV infection in the Republic of Korea were similar to those of previous outbreaks in the Middle East. However, the overall mortality rate (20.4%) was lower than that in previous reports. Enhanced surveillance and active management of patients during the outbreak may have resulted in improved outcomes.</P>
Improved Quantification of Islet Transplants by Magnetic Resonance Imaging With Resovist

OBJECTIVES:: We aimed to develop an accurate and reproducible method to quantify transplanted islets and monitor their functional status in vivo. To support this aim, we investigated the cytotoxic effect of Resovist on islet function and survival. METHODS:: The average pixel number for a single Resovist-labeled islet was measured. To determine Resovist cytotoxicity, DNA fragmentation, adenosine diphosphate-adenosine triphosphate ratio, ion channel activity, and in vivo islet function were evaluated. To quantitatively monitor the fate of islet transplant, we transplanted Resovist-labeled islets into syngeneic C57BL/6 mice for magnetic resonance imaging analysis. RESULTS:: The average pixel volume for a medium-sized islet (100-150 μm in diameter) was determined from the contrast signal void of magnetic resonance image. Toxicological analysis showed that Resovist did not affect islet at concentrations up to 40 times the labeling dose. In the quantitative analysis, the number of contrast spots did not correlated with the number of transplanted islets, whereas our newly adopted measure showed a significant correlation. CONCLUSIONS:: Islet transplant survival may be safely and accurately monitored using magnetic resonance imaging with the Resovist. We found in this study that pixel number may correlate more closely than the number of contrast spots with the number of islets transplanted.
Graft-versus-host disease after kidney transplantation

<P>Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a rare complication after kidney transplantation. We describe a 62-year-old female with end-stage renal disease due to hypertension. She received a kidney with 4 mismatched human leukocyte antigen (HLA) out of 6 HLA - A, B, DR from a deceased donor. After the procedure, the patient showed watery diarrhea on postoperative day (POD) 45. An endoscopic biopsy of the colon revealed some apoptotic cells consistent with GVHD. Thrombocytopenia was gradually developed on POD 54. She received steroid pulse therapy, and thrombocytopenia did not progress. However, pneumonia, renal failure, and cardiac failure occurred. She died due to multiple organ failure. We must consider GVHD in renal transplant recipients without homozygous or identical HLA, who had only watery diarrhea without other typical GVHD symptoms such as skin rash and fever, although GVHD is rare in renal transplant recipients.</P>
