Emissions from Deep Levels in Hydrothermal Grown ZnO Substrates

Undoped ZnO single-crystal substrates grown by using the hydrothermal method purchased from Tokyo Denpa Co. Ltd. (Japan) and SPC Goodwill Co. Ltd. (Russia) have been evaluated using low-temperature photoluminescence measurements. The broad deep emission bands in the two kinds of substrates can be decomposed into two Gaussian peaks: one located at 2.1 - 2.2 eV and the other at 2.4 - 2.5 eV, which are called the yellow band and the green band, respectively. the temperature dependence of the peak energy of the broad band could be explained by using the dierence between the temperature quenching rates of the green and the yellow bands.

Objective: In the treatment of patients with schizophrenia, pro re nata (PRN) drugs are commonly prescribed for medical indications such as agitation, acute psychiatric symptoms, insomnia, and anxiety. However, high-quality evidence supporting the use of PRN medications is lacking, and these drugs are administered on the basis of clinical experience and habits. Therefore, the actual use of psychotropic PRN drugs and its influence on the patients’ outcomes need to be investigated. Methods: This study included 205 patients who underwent inpatient treatment for schizophrenia. We investigated the prescription of psychotropic drugs before admission and at discharge, as well as the dosing frequency of PRN drugs during hospitalization. We also examined the influence of psychotropic PRN drug use on hospitalization days, antipsychotic polypharmacy, and readmission rates. Results: Patients who used psychotropic PRN drugs during hospitalization had significantly longer hospitalization days (p = 7.5 × 10−4) and significantly higher rates of antipsychotic polypharmacy (p = 2.4 × 10−4) at discharge than those who did not use psychotropic PRN drugs. Moreover, a higher number of psychotropic PRN drugs used per day was associated with higher readmission rates within 3 months of discharge (p = 4.4 × 10−3). Conclusion: Psychotropic PRN drug use is associated with prolonged hospitalization, antipsychotic polypharmacy, and increased readmission rates in inpatients with schizophrenia. Therefore, psychiatric symptoms should be stabilized with regularly prescribed medications without the extensive use of psychotropic PRN drugs. Moreover, a system for monitoring and reexamining PRN drug use needs to be established.
Ameloblastic carcinoma of the mandible: a case report

Background Ameloblastic carcinoma is a malignant form of ameloblastoma and a very rare odontogenic tumor. We report a case of ameloblastic carcinoma that occurred after removal of a right-sided mandibular dental implant. Case presentation A 72-year-old female patient visited her family dentist with a complaint of pain around a lower right implant placed 37 years previously. Although the dental implant was removed with the diagnosis of periimplantitis, the patient experienced dullness of sensation in the lower lip and was followed up by her dentist, but after no improvement. She was referred to a highly specialized institution where she was diagnosed with osteomyelitis and treated the patient with medication; however, there was no improvement. In addition, granulation was observed in the same area leading to a suspicion of malignancy, and the patient was referred to our oral cancer center. The diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma was made after a biopsy at our hospital. Under general anesthesia, the patient underwent mandibulectomy, right-sided neck dissection, free flap reconstruction with an anterolateral thigh flap, immediate reconstruction with a metal plate, and tracheostomy. Histological analysis of the resected specimen on hematoxylin and eosin staining showed structures reminiscent of enamel pulp and squamous epithelium in the center of the tumor. The tumor cells were highly atypical, with nuclear staining, hypertrophy, irregular nuclear size, and irregular nuclear shape, all of which were suggestive of cancer. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that Ki-67 was expressed in more than 80% of the targeted area, and the final diagnosis was primary ameloblastic carcinoma. Conclusion After reconstructive flap transplantation, occlusion was re-established using a maxillofacial prosthesis. The patient remained disease-free at the 1-year 3-month follow-up.

Background: Adjuvant androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is a treatment option for prostate cancer (PC) patients after radical prostatectomy (RP). Although it can achieve a good progression-free survival rate, some patients still develop clinical metastasis. We here investigated risk factors of clinical metastasis in post-prostatectomy patients who received immediate adjuvant ADT. Materials and Methods: We identified 197 patients with non-metastatic PC who underwent RP at our institution between 2000 and 2012, followed by adjuvant ADT. The associations of various clinicopathologic factors with clinical metastasis (primary endpoint) and cancer-specific survival (secondary endpoint) were assessed. Multivariate analysis was conducted using a Cox proportional hazards model. Median follow-up was 87 months after RP. Results: Nine (4.6%) patients developed clinical metastasis and six (3.0%) died from PC. Eight of nine metastatic patients had a pathologic Gleason score (GS) 9 and developed bone metastasis, while the remaining one had pathologic GS 7 and developed metastasis only to para-aortic lymph nodes. On multivariate analyses, pathologic GS ${\geq}9$ and regional lymph node metastasis (pN1) were independent predictors of clinical metastasis and pathologic GS ${\geq}9$ was an independent predictor of cancer-specific death. Conclusions: Pathologic GS ${\geq}9$ and pN1 were independent predictors of clinical metastasis in post-prostatectomy patients who received immediate adjuvant ADT. Furthermore, pathologic GS ${\geq}9$ was an indispensable condition for bone metastasis, which may imply that patients with GS ${\leq}8$ on adjuvant ADT are unlikely to develop bone metastasis.

Distribution of marine type of Aquabirnavirus (MABV) was examined in shellfish and fish from Okinawa and Ishigaki Islands, Japan, where water temperature is higher than 25°C through the year. Genome detection and virus isolation were performed for shellfish and fish samples, and the results revealed the prevalent distribution of MABV in diverse species in the area, although isolation was not frequently. Detection rate of MABV genome in bivalves was higher than gastropods, which was similar result to former report in mainland of Japan. Furthermore, the unique five-nucleotide deletion was found with a high rate of occurrence in the MABV genome from shellfish and fish. This study showed distribution status of MABV in organisms in subtropical waters by wide monitoring, and discovered new genome variation in VP2/NS region of this virus.

Background: The encapsulation of curcumin (Cur) in polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles (Cur-NPs) was designed to improve its solubility and stability. Conjugation of the Cur-NPs with anti-P-glycoprotein (P-gp) antibody (Cur-NPs-APgp) may increase their targeting to P-gp, which is highly expressed in multidrugresistance (MDR) cancer cells. This study determined whether Cur-NPs-APgp could overcome MDR in a human cervical cancer model (KB-V1 cells) in vitro and in vivo. Materials and Methods: First, we determined the MDR-reversing property of Cur in P-gp-overexpressing KB-V1 cells in vitro and in vivo. Cur-NPs and Cur-NPs-APgp, in the range 150-180 nm, were constructed and subjected to an in vivo pharmacokinetic study compared with Cur. The in vitro and in vivo MDR-reversing properties of Cur-NPs and Cur-NPs-APgp were then investigated. Moreover, the stability of the NPs was determined in various solutions. Results: The combined treatment of paclitaxel (PTX) with Cur dramatically decreased cell viability and tumor growth compared to PTX treatment alone. After intravenous injection, Cur-NPs-APgp and Cur-NPs could be detected in the serum up to 60 and 120 min later, respectively, whereas Cur was not detected after 30 min. Pretreatment with Cur-NPs-APgp, but not with NPs or Cur-NPs, could enhance PTX sensitivity both in vitro and in vivo. The constructed NPs remained a consistent size, proving their stability in various solutions. Conclusions: Our functional Cur-NPs-APgp may be a suitable candidate for application in a drug delivery system for overcoming drug resistance. The further development of Cur-NPs-APgp may be beneficial to cancer patients by leading to its use as either as a MDR modulator or as an anticancer drug.
MBE Growth of ZnSe Films on Lattice-Matched InxGa1-xAs Substrates

Raman scatering of ZnSe layers grown on nearly latice matched InxGa1-xAs substrates (x = 0 -0.092) by using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) have ben investigated. The Raman shift of the ZnSe longitudinal optical (LO) phonon stays nearly constant while the line width Γ increases with increasing indium molar fraction of the substrates. The results are analyzed based on the two-parameter spatial corelation model. The intrinsic line width of ZnSe LO is found to depend strongly on the spatial corelation length of the substrate.
