The Chungryang-stream is one of the tributaries of the Han-river which flows through the north-eastern part of Seoul city which is the largest one in Korea. The total length of the stream is 102.2 kilometers (main stream: 42.2 kilometers, its branch: 60 kilometers) and the study area is about 239 square kilometers with the population of 1.8 million. Major sources of pollution on the stream in study area are both of industrial and domestic waste water, which adversely affect the water quality of the down stream of the Han-river. The water quality measured by BOD_5 of the upstream of Chungryang-stream was about 7.0 milligrams per liter. However passing through the area of the Euijungbu, the water quality measured by BOD_5 was showing high concentration as about 40 milligrams per, liter due to the sewage from the Euijungbu city and the highly polluted water of Paeksuk-stream. No significant seasonal changes in DO concentration are shown in main stream except upstream and the ratio of T. coli/F. coli is 3. 4 in the upstream, 1. 6 in the midstream and 2.3 in the downstream. COD values of sediments range from 3. 0 to 384. 9 milligrams per liter and it is found a wide viriation of the values owing to the rainfall.

Goat milk has a protein composition similar to that of breast milk and contains abundant nutrients, but its use in functional foods is rather limited in comparison to milk from other sources. The aim of this study was to prepare a goat A2 β-casein fraction with improved digestibility and hypoallergenic properties. We investigated the optimal conditions for the separation of A2 β-casein fraction from goat milk by pH adjustment to pH 4.4 and treating the casein suspension with calcium chloride (0.05 M for 1 h at 25°C). Selective reduction of β- lactoglobulin and αs-casein was confirmed using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The hypoallergenic property of A2 β-casein fraction was examined by measuring the release of histamine and tumor necrosis factor alpha from HMC-1 human mast cells exposed to different proteins, including A2 β-casein fraction. There was no significant difference in levels of both indicators between A2 β-casein treatment and the control (no protein treatment). The A2 β-casein fraction is abundant in essential amino acids, especially, branched-chain amino acids (leucine, valine, and isoleucine). The physicochemical properties of A2 β-casein fraction, including protein solubility and viscosity, are similar to those of bovine whole casein which is widely used as a protein source in various foods. Therefore, the goat A2 β-casein fraction may be useful as a food material with good digestibility and hypoallergenic properties for infants, the elderly, and people with metabolic disorders.

The aim of this study was to identify the activated brain region that is involved with the affective dimension of thermal stimulation (not pain, but innocuous warming) using functional MR imaging. Twelve healthy, right-handed male subjects participated in the study. Thermal stimulation with two different temperatures of 41°C and 34°C was applied to the subjects using a fomentation pack, wrapped around the right lower leg of each subject. On the basis of the subjects' responses after the scanning sessions, the authors were able to observe that the subjects felt "warm" and "slightly pleasant and comfortable" under the 41°C condition. The experimental results indicated that warm stimulation produced a significant increase of activation compared to thermal neutral stimulation in various regions such as contralateral insular, ipsilateral cerebellum, ipsilateral putamen, contralateral middle frontal gyrus, ipsilateral inferior frontal gyrus, contralateral postcentral gyrus, and contralateral paracentral lobule. The activated regions are known to be related to thermal sensory, affective/emotional awareness, cognitive functions, sensory-discrimination, and emotion/affective processing, and so on. These results suggest that an appropriate thermal stimulation can produce a positive emotion and activate emotion/affect related regions of the brain.

The mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is inherited maternally, in which the MTTL1*MELAS 3243 mutation has been most, commonly found as a heteroplasmy of A to G point mutation in the tRNALeu(UUR) gene. The MTTL1*MELAS 3271 mutation is known to be the second common mutation, though clinical features of both mutations are not remarkably different. Recently, a variety of minor mutations have been reported in patients with MELAS. In this study, major efforts have been made to investigate the allele frequency of major three mutations including MTTL1*MELAS 3243, 3252, 3271 in 10 Korean families with MELAS probands. The PCR end subsequent direct sequencing of the PCR product in the regions spanning these three mutation sites were employed to identify the mutation in each proband. All family members have been screened for the presence of these three mutations by PCR-RFLP assay using Apa Ⅰ, Ace Ⅰ and Bfr Ⅰ restriction enzymes. The MTTL1*MELAS 3243 mutation was most commonly found (7 out of 10 families tested) followed by the MTTL1*MELAS 3271 which was identified in 1 out of 10 families. In the remaining 2 families, none of three mutations were found, indicating the presence of a either nuclear mutation or yet unidentified mitochondrial DNA mutation in these families.
Measurement-based Static Load Modeling Using the PMU data Installed on the University Load
Han, Sang-Wook,Kim, Ji-Hun,Lee, Byong-Jun,Song, Hwa-Chang,Kim, Hong-Rae,Shin, Jeong-Hoon,Kim, Tae-Kyun The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2012 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.7 No.5
Load modeling has a significant influence on power system analysis and control. In recent years, measurement-based load modeling has been widely practiced. In the load modeling algorithm, the model structure is determined and the parameters of the established model are estimated. For parameter estimation, least-squares optimization method is applied. The model parameters are estimated so that the error between the measured values and the predicted values is to be minimized. By introducing sliding window concept, on-line load modeling method can be performed which reflects the dynamic behaviors of loads in real-time. For the purpose of data acquisition, the measurement system including PMU is implemented in university level. In this paper, case studies are performed using real PMU data from Korea Univ. and Seoul National University of Science and Technology. The performances of modeling real and reactive power behaviors using exponential and ZIP load model are evaluated.
A Case of Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Accompanied by a Cystic Change in Early Stage
Sang Soo Bae,Eun Jeong Kim,Dong Wook Lee,Ho Gak Kim,Jimin Han Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Cancer 2017 Journal of digestive cancer reports Vol.5 No.1
Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are rare pancreatic neoplasms comprising 1-2% of all pancreatic tumors and typically present high attenuating mass on arterial and venous phase images, due to their rich capillary network. A 70-year-old South Korean female visited our hospital presenting with jaundice and dark urine color. She had received an operation for treatment of small bowel perforation seven years ago. On physical examination, icteric sclera was observed but otherwise unremarkable. Laboratory tests were abnormal liver function test and suspected obstructive jaundice. Computed tomography revealed 4 cm sized cystic mass lesion with homogeneous low attenuation in the head of pancreas and distal common bile duct was compressed by the mass. During review of past medical records, we found that the mass was observed and measured about 1.7 cm seven years ago. To resolve obstructive jaundice, pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed and diagnosed with well differentiated pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma with intermediate grade.

Cat eye syndrome (CES) is a very rare chromosomal syndrome characterized by various malformations such as anal atresia, preauricular malformation, coloboma of the iris, and congenial heart and renal defects. This genetic disorder is caused by partial duplication of chromosome 22, mostly as a result of a supernumerary isodicentric marker chromosome idic(22)(q11.2). Various congenital abnormalities and extreme phenotypic variability in CES patients have been reported, which have made prenatal diagnosis of CES difficult. We report the first case diagnosed with CES prenatally by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification in a woman who was referred to our hospital, for a fetus presenting with heart anomaly.
