A conducting polypyrrole lm has been prepared on indium tin oxide coated glass plate by electropolymerization of pyrrole in anaqueous solution of enzyme, tyrosinase (PPO), and a redox mediator potassium hexacyanoferrate (II). The enzyme retains its bio-activity well within the polymer lm. Phenol concentration in aqueous solution was quantitatively estimated by monitoring the elec-tron exchange occurring in redox mediator within the polymer matrix i.e. direct reduction of Fe (III) to Fe (II) ion at +0.12V vs. Ag/AgCl. The results of amperometric response measurements conducted on enzyme electrode (PPO/Fe2+/PPY/ITO) show a sensitivityof 0.33 AM. 1 cm. 2 and a linear response range of 4.5107.4l M for phenol in aqueous medium. The electrode exhibits a responsetime of about 80 second and is stable for 4 months at 4.C..

Acute mesenteric occlusion is a life-threatening condition with a significant mortality rate and requires prompt diagnosis and revascularization using open repair, a hybrid procedure, or endovascular intervention. The open approach is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, while endovascular procedures are done by the antegrade or retrograde open mesenteric stent technique and have been observed to improve the prognosis and outcomes of mesenteric ischemia. We report three cases of acute-on-chronic mesenteric ischemia secondary to occlusion with failed percutaneous mesenteric artery stenting. They were successfully treated using a novel hybrid technique, without the need for mesenteric arteriotomy or subsequent arterial repair.

Background: Low vitamin D levels affects muscle function. Vitamin D and calcium deficiency cause osteomalacic myopathy and poor functional recovery after hip fractures. The relationship of vitamin D and functional performance after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is not previously reported. Methods: Influence of vitamin D on functional performance before and after TKA was reviewed retrospectively in 120 patients. Of these, 64 had vitamin D deficiency (25-hydroxy vitamin D < 30 ng/mL) preoperatively. All 120 patients received vitamin D oral supplementation postoperatively. Functional parameters including Western Ontario and McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Short-Form Health Survey questionnaire, and Knee Society Score were assessed pre- and postoperatively at 3 months. Results: Preoperative function was significantly lower in osteoarthritic patients with vitamin D deficiency (WOMAC score; p = 0.040), but at 3 months all functional scores were similar. Conclusions: We concluded that vitamin D deficiency has a negative effect on function in knee osteoarthritic patients. However, postoperative vitamin D supplementation can lead to functional recovery in these patients. Thus, TKA should not be delayed in vitamin D deficient patients; rather supplementation in the postoperative period is preferable to achieve comparable functional outcome at 3 months to patients with vitamin D sufficiency.

This paper suggests two ratio-cum-product estimators of finite population mean using known coefficient of variation and co-efficient of kurtosis of auxiliary characters. The bias and mean squared error of the proposed estimators with large sample approximation are derived. It has been shown that the estimators suggested by Upadhyaya and Singh (1999) are particular case of the suggested estimators. Almost ratio-cum product estimators of suggested estimators have also been obtained using Jackknife technique given by Quenouille (1956). An empirical study is also carried out to demonstrate the performance of the suggested estimators.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A novel approach to explore the impact of calcium specific chelant - Ethylene glycol tetra acetic acid (EGTA) on deflocculation followed by biomass disintegration using microwave (MW) was investigated. In the first phase of the study, the EGTA dosage of 0.012 g/g suspended solids (SS) was found to be optimal for disassociating the biomass. Subsequent disintegration of biomass in microwave (EGTA-MW) yielded a biomass lysis and solids reduction of about 39.7% and 30.5%. EGTA-MW disintegration reduces the amount of specific energy required to disintegrate the biomass from 18,900 kJ/kg TS to 13,500 kJ/kg TS, when compared to control. The impact of EGTA-MW disintegration on anaerobic digestion was also evident from its methane yield (235.3 mL/g VS) which was 36.2% higher than control. An economic assessment of this study provides a net profit of 8.48 €/ton in EGTA-MW and highly endorsed for biomass disintegration.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> EGTA mediated microwave disintegration is a novel pretreatment method. </LI> <LI> EGTA mediated deflocculation was effective at 0.012 g/g SS. </LI> <LI> At low SE input 13,500 kJ/kg TS, EGTA-MW achieved a biomass lysis of about 39.7%. </LI> <LI> High methane potential of about 235.3 mL/g VS in EGTA-MW was achieved. </LI> <LI> EGTA-MW was found to be a cost-effective approach with a net profit of 8.48 €/ton. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Anatomically separate fat depots differ in size, function, and contribution to pathological states such as the metabolic syndrome. We isolated pre-adipocytes from different adipose depots, omental, subcutaneous and intramuscular, of beef cattle, and cultured in vitro to determine the basis for the variations and attribute these variations to the inherent properties of adipocyte progenitors. The proliferating cells from all depots before the confluence were harvested and the proteome was analyzed by a functional proteomic approach, involving 2-DE and MALDI-TOF/TOF. More than 252 protein spots were identified, selected and analyzed by Image Master (ver 7.0) and MALDI-TOF/TOF. Further, our analysis showed that there were specific differences in proteome expression patterns among proliferating precursor cells from the three depots. Sixteen proteins were found to be differentially expressed and these were identified as proteins involved in cellular processes, heat shock/chaperones, redox proteins, cytoskeletal proteins and metabolic enzymes. The results also enabled us to understand the basic roles of these proteins in different inherent properties exhibited by adipose tissue depots.

Photocatalytic composite materials having photon absorption capability in the range of visible light were synthesized by loading TiO2 (5, 10, 15, and 20 wt%) on ferrite nanocomposites by sol-gel auto-combustion method. The synthesized nanocomposites were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, Transmission electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and N2 adsorption techniques. The generation of photo active hydroxyl radicals for all the synthesized composites was found higher under the irradiation of red LED (RLED irradiation) which was confirmed by degradation of rhodamine B dye under irradiation of RLED. Photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanocomposites was also carried out under irradiation of ultraviolet (UVLED) and blue (BLED) light emitting diodes, which is comparatively less than for the reaction under red LED irradiation. The operational parameters like catalyst amount, pH and concentration of dye solution were studied and ESI-MS degradation pathway is proposed by analyzing the degraded samples.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and anti-inflammatory potentials of ethanolic extract of leaves of Amaranthus paniculatus linn. (EEAP) on alloxan-induced diabetic rats scientifically. Hyperglycemia induces the generation of free radicals which can affect antioxidant defenses, thus leading to the disruption of beta cellular functions, oxidative damage to membranes, leading to the release of C-reactive protein and altered lipid metabolism. Methods: Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of ice-cold aqueous alloxan monohydrate at the dose of 150 mg/kg body weight. Results: After a daily single oral administration of the EEAP for 28 days starting from the study protocol, the blood glucose, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were assessed. The results obtained from the study administration of daily dose of EEAP significantly reduced the blood glucose, SGPT, SGOT, TC, TG, and CRP in a dose-dependent manner. The results obtained were comparable to those of glibenclamide. The serum levels of TC, TG, and CRP were significantly altered in the diabetic control group, but it was significantly decreased in the extract-treated group and standard glibenclamide-treated group, except at a dose of 100 mg/kg where there was no significant effect on the TG level. The finding obtained suggests that EEAP acts through molecular level, modifying the altered pathways in diabetes and associated complications. Conclusion: The results obtained suggest that EEAP possesses a potential for the management of diabetes and associated complications in experimentally-induced diabetic rats.
STOCK MARKET DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: EVIDENCE FROM BOOTSTRAP PANEL GRANGER CAUSALITY TEST
RAJESH SHARMA,Samaresh Bardhan 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2018 Journal of Economic Development Vol.43 No.3
The paper presents causality analysis between stock market development and economic growth for 25 advanced economies over the period 1975-2011. We apply bootstrap panel Granger causality method (Emirmahmutoglu and Kose, 2011) for this purpose, which incorporates heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence in a panel framework. Using alternative measures of stock market size and liquidity, we find evidence of uni-directional causality from stock market development to growth in case of individual countries as well as with panel statistics in the presence of cross-sectional dependence which support supply leading hypothesis (stock market led growth). However, we hardly find any evidence of demand-following hypothesis or feedback hypothesis. Findings also reveal that market size is relatively more important than liquidity measures in case of advanced economies despite favourable theoretical prediction that stock market liquidity might ease investments, improve allocation of capital and enhance prospects for economic growth. Probable policy implications that emerge from experiences of advanced economies is that despite several unfavourable features of stock market development, which put certain market dominated advanced economies in disadvantageous positions compared to certain bank-based economies, emerging economies should certainly focus on stock market development as alternative potential means of financial development and hence long-term economic growth.
