K. Uma Maheswara Rao,C. Radha Rani,S. Siva Prasad,Ch. Syama Sundar,C. Suresh Reddy 대한화학회 2011 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.32 No.9
A simple efficient and neat synthesis of α-hydroxy phosphonates has been accomplished from aromatic/heterocyclic aldehydes and diethyl phosphite using KHSO_4 as a catalyst under solvent-free conditions at ambient temperature. These compounds are characterized by spectral and analytical data and tested for their anti-oxidant activity.

Background: Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. Depression, anxiety, and stress are associated with knee osteoarthritis. Objectives: The aim of the study was to check the effectiveness of acupressure therapy with pharmacological treatment on pain, depression, anxiety, and stress in patients with knee osteoarthritis and to assess the effect of pain improvement on psychological health. Methods: Eligible 212 patients with knee osteoarthritis were divided into two groups (intervention and control group). The intervention group (n = 106) received acupressure therapy in combination with pharmacological treatment, whereas the control group (n = 106) continued pharmacological treatment only. Pain and psychological symptoms were measured using the visual analog scale and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21. Pearson's correlation was used to check the effect of pain improvement on psychological health. Results: Patients of both groups reported severe pain initially. On analyzing the results after completion of the study, it was found that patients in the intervention group scored better on the pain scale (p < 0.001) and DASS-21 (p ≤ 0.0001). However, it may be noted that reduction in the DASS-21 score was not found to be significant for the control group (p = 0.08). Pearson's correlation coefficients value ranged from 0.231 to 0.412 for DASS-21 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: On analysis, it can be concluded that acupressure can be used as add-on therapy in combination with conventional treatment (pharmacological treatment), which may assist in pain reduction. The reduction in pain directly contributes to improvement in the physiological wellness among patients with knee osteoarthritis.

An efficient short-term storage system of syntheticseeds, produced using in vitro shoot tips of themonopodial orchid hybrid Aranda Wan Chark Kuan‘Blue’ 9 Vanda coerulea Grifft. ex. Lindl. (AV), wasdeveloped. In vitro shoot tips (3–4 mm) were successfullyencapsulated, resulting in uniform spherical beads (capsules),using 3 % sodium alginate with 75 mMCaCl22H2O. Maximum (*100 %) conversion (intoplantlets with shoot and root) of capsules (or syntheticseeds) was achieved on quarter-strength Murashige andSkoog regrowth medium, while full-strength MS mediumwas required for effective conversion of non-encapsulatedshoot tips. The capsules showed distinct difference in theirresponse to temperature during storage. The conversionefficiency declined upon storage duration at both 4 and25 C, with those stored at 25 C being more tolerant tostorage. Capsules stored at 4 C had rapid deterioration andfaced complete death within 160 days while those storedfor 200 days at 25 C showed relatively high conversion(71.6 %). An inter-simple sequence repeats fingerprintingapproach, employed on indiscriminately chosen plantletsfrom converted capsules (following 4 and 25 C of storage),ensured the post-storage genetic stability.

Yield Improvement by Two Cycles of Mass Selection in Two Sweet Corn Populations
Nigussie Mandefro,Saleh Ghizan,Wahab Zakaria,Sinniah Uma Rani The Korean Society of Crop Science 2005 Korean journal of crop science Vol.50 No.2
Mass selection (MS) is an efficient selection method to directly improve highly heritable traits. In the present study, two cycles of MS for ear length were conducted on two sweet corn populations, BC2-l0 and $BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ after introgression of exotic germplasm. The improved populations generated from these selections were evaluated in comparison with the base populations at two locations, to determine the genetic gains and performance of the improved populations. The two base populations showed varied average realized responses to MS. In BC2-l0 derived population, the realized responses were $9.1\%$ in BC2-l0 C1 and $1.2\%$ in BC2-l0 C2, whereas in$BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ derived population, the realized responses were$ 5.6\%$ in $BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ C1 and $2.9\%$ in $BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ C2. All the improved populations showed longer ears than their respective base populations and the check varieties. Ear length, which was used as the selection criterion in this study, showed high broad-sense heritability in the BC2-l0 and $BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ derived populations, while fresh ear yield revealed low heritability, indicating that selection for ear length in these populations would be more effective than direct selection for yield. Results of this study indicate that MS conducted on BC210 and $BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ had significantly increased ear length and fresh ear yield in both populations. The improved populations obtained would serve as better germplasm sources and further selection in these populations could offer better responses.

A thin spray coating of inorganic black lithium polysilicate (IBLP) on black anodized AZ31B magnesiumalloy was fabricated for better corrosion resistance and thermo-optical properties for thermal control of spacecraftcomponents. The morphology of the specimens with and without IBLP-based spray coating was characterizedby SEM-EDS techniques. Impedance and potentiodynamic measurements on the specimens revealed bettercorrosion resistance for the specimen with a thin coating of lithium polysilicate. This was primarily dueto the presence of lithium polysilicate inside the micro-cracks of the black anodized specimen, restrictingthe diffusion paths for corrosive media. Environmental tests, namely, humidity, thermal cycling, thermovacuum performance, were used to evaluate the space-worthiness of the coating. The thermo-optical propertiesof the coating were measured before and after each environmental test to ascertain its stability. The specimenwith an IBLP-based spray coating showed enhanced thermo-optical properties, greater than ~0.90. Hence, the proposed coating demonstrated better handling, better corrosion resistance, and space-worthiness duringthe pre-launch phase owing to its improved thermo-optical properties.

The rhizome which is the most important part of this species is widely used as a folk medicine for the treatment of asthma, fever, cancer, wounds, allergies, toothache, leprosy, bronchitis, epilepsy, hemorrhoids, leukoderma and rheumatoid arthritis. C. caesia is one of the important species of Curcuma which possess various bioactive compounds that responsible for numerous pharmacological activities. The rhizome which is the most prominent feature of the plant is rich with essential oil. In addition, the leaves of this species also consist of essential oil with various bioactive compounds. This review article is aimed to discuss in-depth on botany, ethnomedicinal uses, geographical distribution, propagation, phytochemical studies, pharmacological activities and toxicity of C. caesia. The phytochemical studies revealed that a total of 17 functional groups were detected from rhizome extract of C. caesia. The pharmacological studies conducted demonstrated that C. caesia extract exhibited anti-acne, analgesic, anthelmintic, anti-asthmatic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-diabetic, antiproliferative, anticancer, antiulcer, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity and cytotoxicity effects. Furthermore, toxicity studies revealed that C. caesia extract is safe for consumption and does not cause toxicity.
