Objectives: Tuberculosis (TB) and drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) are national health burdens in Vietnam. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of rifampicin (RIF) and/or isoniazid (isonicotinic acid hydrazide, INH) resistance in patients with suspected TB, and applied appropriate techniques to help rapidly target DR-TB. Methods: In total, 1,547 clinical specimens were collected and cultured using the BACTEC MGIT system (Becton Dickinson and Co.). A resazurin microtiter assay (REMA) was used to determine the proportions of RIF and/or INH resistance. A real-time polymerase chain reaction panel with TaqMan probes was employed to identify the mutations of rpoB and katG associated with DR-TB in clinical isolates. Genotyping of the identified mutations was also performed. Results: A total of 468 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates were identified using the REMA. Of these isolates, 106 (22.6%) were found to be resistant to 1 or both antibiotics. Of the resistant isolates, 74 isolates (69.8%) were resistant to isoniazid (INH) only, while 1 isolate (0.94%) was resistant to RIF only. Notably, 31 isolates (29.24%) were resistant to both antibiotics. Of the 41 phenotypically INH-resistant isolates, 19 (46.3%) had the Ser315Thr mutation. There were 8 different rpoB mutations in 22 (68.8%) of the RIF-resistant isolates. The most frequently detected mutations were at codons 531 (37.5%), 526 (18.8%), and 516 (6.3%). Conclusion: To help prevent new cases of DR-TB in Vietnam, it is crucial to gain a comprehensive understanding of the genotypic DR-TB isolates.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to characterize mental health issues among Vietnamese healthcare workers (HCWs) and to identify related factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 990 HCWs in 2021. Their mental health status was measured using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale. Results: In total, 49.9%, 52.3%, and 29.8% of respondents were found to have depression, anxiety, and stress, respectively. The multivariable linear regression model revealed that factors associated with increased anxiety scores included depression scores (β, 0.45; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.39 to 0.51) and stress scores (β, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.41 to 0.52). Factors associated with increased depression scores included being frontline HCWs (β, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.10 to 1.10), stress scores (β, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.45 to 0.56), and anxiety scores (β, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.47), while working experience was associated with reduced depression scores (β, -0.08; 95% CI, -0.16 to -0.01). Factors associated with increased stress scores included working experience (β, 0.08; 95% CI, 0.00 to 0.16), personal protective equipment interference with daily activities (β, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.07 to 1.00), depression scores (β, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.48 to 0.59), and anxiety scores (β, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.39 to 0.50), while age was associated with reduced stress scores (β, -0.12; 95% CI, -0.20 to -0.05).Conclusions: Specific interventions are necessary to enhance and promote the mental health of HCWs so they can successfully cope with the circumstances of the pandemic.

<P>Five new tirucallane saponins, paramignyosides A-E (1-5), were isolated from the water fraction of the Paramignya scandens stem and leaves. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence including high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) and one dimensional (1D)- and 2D-NMR. The effects of isolated compounds on pro-inflammatory cytokines were evaluated by measuring the production of interleukin (IL)-12 p40, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs). Paramignyoside C (3) exhibited selective and potent inhibitory effect (IC50=5.030.19??M) on the production of IL-12 p40 comparable to that of the positive control, SB203580 (IC50=5.000.16??M). Further studies are required to confirm efficacy in vivo and the mechanism of anti-inflammatory effects.</P>

New Technique for the Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes
Phan Ngoc Minh,Phan Hong Khoi,Nguyen Van Chuc,Phan Ngoc Hong,Ngo Thi Thanh Tam 한국물리학회 2008 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.53 No.5
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered as a promising material for various applications. However, due to their limited availability and high purchasing costs, at the present time, only a few of these applications have been realized. The realization of CNT-based devices and CNT-based materials depends on success in material synthesis and on the possibility of controlling the nanotube's chirality, diameter and purity. This paper describes new simple techniques for (i) synthesis of vertically-aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNTs), (ii) mass and low-cost production of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and (iii) growth of individual CNTs on tungsten tips.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In a search for anti-inflammatory activity in resources from Vietnamese mangroves, we found that a methanolic extract from the leaves of <I>Calophyllum inophyllum</I> (CIL) showed significant anti-inflammatory effects <I>in vitro</I>. Using various chromatographic techniques, we subsequently isolated 12 compounds (<B>1</B>–<B>12</B>) from a methanolic extract of CIL, including two novel compounds (<B>1</B>–<B>2</B>). The inhibitory effects of these compounds on lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW264.7 cells were also evaluated. Compound <B>1</B> significantly suppressed NO production (IC50 = 2.44 ± 0.88 µM), the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines (including interleukin-1 beta and tumor necrosis factor alpha), and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase through downregulation of nuclear factor-kappa-B signaling cascades. These results suggest that <I>C. inophyllum</I> leaves might be a useful resource for the development of drugs for the treatment of inflammation.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Twelve compounds were isolated from Vietnamese mangrove <I>Calophyllum inophyllum</I>. </LI> <LI> Two new compounds <B>1</B> and <B>2</B> were determined by spectroscopic methods. </LI> <LI> Compound <B>1</B> showed significant anti-inflammatory activity. </LI> <LI> These results suggested that <I>C. inophyllum</I> might useful as the anti-inflammation drug. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Phytochemical investigation of the stem barks of Canarium bengalense (Burseraceace) resulted in the isolation of a new flavone glycoside (5) together with six known compounds (1-4, 6, and 7). The chemical structure of the new compound was elucidated as 3'-hydroxy-7,4'-dimethoxyflavone-5-O-α-L-arabinofuranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside by means of 1D and 2D NMR (1H-1H COSY, HMQC, and HMBC) and MS analyses. To evaluate the in vitro cytoprotective effect, the isolates (1-7) were tested against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced damage in primary cultured hepatocytes. The viability of hepatocytes was increased by treatment with each compound, except compound 1. Compounds 3, 4, and 7 exerted cytoprotective effects comparable to curcumin, the positive control. Our results suggest that the cytoprotective constituents of C. bengalense may contribute to its traditional use in the treatment of tumor and liver damage.
