Surface-Effect-Induced Optical Bandgap Shrinkage in GaN Nanotubes
Park, Young S.,Lee, Geunsik,Holmes, Mark J.,Chan, Christopher C. S.,Reid, Benjamin P. L.,Alexander-Webber, Jack A.,Nicholas, Robin J.,Taylor, Robert A.,Kim, Kwang S.,Han, Sang W.,Yang, Woochul,Jo, Y. American Chemical Society 2015 NANO LETTERS Vol.15 No.7

We investigate nontrivial surface effects on the optical properties of self-assembled crystalline GaN nanotubes grown on Si substrates. The excitonic emission is observed to redshift by ∼100 meV with respect to that of bulk GaN. We find that the conduction band edge is mainly dominated by surface atoms, and that a larger number of surface atoms for the tube is likely to increase the bandwidth, thus reducing the optical bandgap. The experimental findings can have important impacts in the understanding of the role of surfaces in nanostructured semiconductors with an enhanced surface/volume ratio.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Two-Dimensional Excitonic Photoluminescence in Graphene on a Cu Surface
Park, Youngsin,Kim, Yooseok,Myung, Chang Woo,Taylor, Robert Anthony,Chan, Christopher C. S.,Reid, Benjamin P. L.,Puchtler, Tim J.,Nicholas, Robin J.,Singh, Laishram Tomba,Lee, Geunsik,Hwang, Chan-Cuk American Chemical Society 2017 ACS NANO Vol.11 No.3

Despite having outstanding electrical properties, graphene is unsuitable for optical devices because of its zero band gap. Here, we report two-dimensional excitonic photoluminescence (PL) from graphene grown on a Cu(111) surface, which shows an unexpected and remarkably sharp strong emission near 3.16 eV (full width at half-maximum <= 3 meV) and multiple emissions around 3.18 eV. As temperature increases, these emissions blue shift, displaying the characteristic negative thermal coefficient of graphene. The observed PL originates from the significantly suppressed dispersion of excited electrons, in graphene caused by hybridization of graphene pi and Cu d orbitals of the first and second Cu layers at a shifted saddle point 0.525(M+K) of the Brillouin zone. This finding provides a pathway to engineering optoelectronic graphene devices, while maintaining the outstanding electrical properties of graphene.

The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines suggest that children and youth participate in sports to increase physical activity (PA) levels; yet little evidence exists about the amount of PA taking place within a sport practice session. The objective of this study was to measure the PA levels of novice, atom and peewee aged children participating in minor ice hockey. PA levels and practice context were recorded using the System for Observing Hockey Opportunities (SOHO). Sixty practices were observed in four different hockey associations. Observed practice time PA mainly fell into the “standing” category (47.8%), however, 52.1% of practice time was spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA; gliding and skating combined). Observed practice time context consisted mainly of skill development (62.5%). There was a significant difference in MVPA between the age categories (mean percent of time in MVPA: novice = 55.8%; atom = 55.9%; peewee = 46.2%; p = 0.048). Significant differences by age existed in player management time with novice and atom players experiencing the highest proportion (median: novice = 12%; atom = 12%; peewee = 10.5%; p = 0.023). Providing sport-specific PA evidence creates a basis of support for participating in sports to increase PA levels.

Quantum transport of an array of quantum billiards is investigated as a function of the coupling strength of the quantum point con-invasive probe of two characteristic energy scales of the energy level spectrumthe average energy level spacing and average energy levelbroadening. This analysis reveals a marked transition in the coherent area of the array as the coupling between the billiards is increasedand the array evolves into a combined quantum system.
An Approach to Transit Path Design Using GIS
S.V.C. Sekhar, Wen Long Yue, M.A.P.Taylor 서울시립대학교 도시과학연구원 2004 International journal of urban sciences (IJUS) Vol. No.
The design of public transportation networks is complex and can include conflicting objectives. Networks designed to minimise travel time may not fulfil the requirement of maximum coverage and accessibility. In this context, a multi-criteria approach for transit alignment design has been developed to maximise a range of objectives using census data. Whenever a subdivision is developed in a suburban region of a medium sized city, transit operators often receive requests to link the city centre with the new locality via new routes. Traditionally, implementation of routing a new bus service is based on a ‘common sense’approach. This can lead to the development of an irrational network of public transport routes. This research offers an alternative approach, which essentially optimises ulticriteria for planning transit routes. This research has proved that it is worth considering such options for connecting origin-destination zones with a new bus service.

A composite copper coated powder was generated by pressure hydrogen stripping copper from Kelex 100 solvent extractant in the presence of silica powder. Within the limitation of solvent extraction under constant conditions, both loading level and stripping rate were reproducible. The stripping copper kinetics are reduced from a divalent state to a metallic state and then deposited on the surface of the silica powder. Copper nucleates heterogeneously on the seed particles. They are giving an agglomerated and non - uniform powder.

It is well established that individual variations in driving style have a significant impact on vehicle energy efficiency. The literature shows certain parameters have been linked to good fuel economy, specifically acceleration, throttle use, number of stop/starts and gear change behaviours. The primary aim of this study was to examine what driving parameters are specifically related to good fuel economy using a non-homogeneous extended data set of vehicles and drivers over real-world driving scenarios spanning two countries. The analysis presented in this paper shows how three completely independent studies looking at the same factor (i.e., the influence of driver behaviour on fuel efficiency) can be evaluated, and, despite their notable differences in location, environment, route, vehicle and drivers, can be compared on broadly similar terms. The data from the three studies were analysed in two ways; firstly, using expert analysis and the second a purely data driven approach. The various models and experts concurred that a combination of at least one factor from the each of the categories of vehicle speed, engine speed, acceleration and throttle position were required to accurately predict the impact on fuel economy. The identification of standard deviation of speed as the primary contributing factor to fuel economy, as identified by both the expert and data driven analysis, is also an important finding. Finally, this study has illustrated how various seemingly independent studies can be brought together, analysed as a whole and meaningful conclusions extracted from the combined data set.

This paper suggests a novel approach to finding faults in a vehicle’s electronic systems by monitoring thenetwork traffic directly and generating statistical traits. The nature of the data in a CAN network is considered, and a case forthe use of statistical analysis presented. Statistical traits extracted from the temporal behavior of network messages areinvestigated as a metric for fault detection. It is shown how this trait information can be extracted from network data, and howthis information could be used for fault detection of an unknown fault on a CAN network. It is then demonstrated thatcombining multiple types of trait data can be used to correctly identify a fault once detected.
