Where ‘Each Word is Empire’: Margaret Atwood’s Politicised Poetics
Colin Nicholson(Colin Nicholson ) 한국캐나다학회 2009 Asia-Pacific Journal of Canadian Studies (APJCS) Vol.14·15 No.-
When Atwood began writing, feminism in its modern forms had not yet mobilised. Because her sense of politics is lived as a personally involving relationship that will be existentialised, archaeologised, satirised and reconstructed across a range of texts and intertexts, her poetry develops energy and impact on the page by negotiating a political infrastructure felt on the pulse. Atwood’s writing has from the beginning elaborated notions of politically gendered subjectivity marked in performing selves whose seeming privacy articulates public administrations (and suppressions) of experiential possibility. Personal immediacies confront both the pressure of externally determined postcolonial priorities and the difficulty of negotiating already internalised language practices. Atwood’s poetics of resistance to a wide range of assumptions, discourses and histories with which it is inevitably complicit generates political resonance from personalised context. Reading her with and against the social and constitutional contexts described by political scientist Alan Cairns discloses a Canadian subjectivity fascinated with what the record does not say, and with gaps and fissures in the systems of recognition archived as cultural heritage and practiced as customary norms. Canada’s historic and continuing ethnic/ cultural diversity is encoded in work which predates the formal inception of what Cairns calls ‘the new role of the constitution in Canadian society’. In this light, and by expressing an already compromised subjectivity, Atwood devises representational latitude for a coherent, autonomous feminine self.
Accelerated aging of skeletal muscle and the immune system in patients with chronic liver disease
Nicholson Thomas,Dhaliwal Amritpal,Quinlan Jonathan I.,Allen Sophie L.,Williams Felicity R.,Hazeldine Jon,McGee Kirsty C.,Sullivan Jack,Breen Leigh,Elsharkawy Ahmed M.,Armstrong Matthew J.,Jones Simon 2024 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.56 No.-
Patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) often present with significant frailty, sarcopenia, and impaired immune function. However, the mechanisms driving the development of these age-related phenotypes are not fully understood. To determine whether accelerated biological aging may play a role in CLD, epigenetic, transcriptomic, and phenotypic assessments were performed on the skeletal muscle tissue and immune cells of CLD patients and age-matched healthy controls. Accelerated biological aging of the skeletal muscle tissue of CLD patients was detected, as evidenced by an increase in epigenetic age compared with chronological age (mean +2.2 ± 4.8 years compared with healthy controls at −3.0 ± 3.2 years, p = 0.0001). Considering disease etiology, age acceleration was significantly greater in both the alcohol-related (ArLD) (p = 0.01) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (p = 0.0026) subgroups than in the healthy control subgroup, with no age acceleration observed in the immune-mediated subgroup or healthy control subgroup (p = 0.3). The skeletal muscle transcriptome was also enriched for genes associated with cellular senescence. Similarly, blood cell epigenetic age was significantly greater than that in control individuals, as calculated using the PhenoAge (p < 0.0001), DunedinPACE (p < 0.0001), or Hannum (p = 0.01) epigenetic clocks, with no difference using the Horvath clock. Analysis of the IMM-Age score indicated a prematurely aged immune phenotype in CLD patients that was 2-fold greater than that observed in age-matched healthy controls (p < 0.0001). These findings suggested that accelerated cellular aging may contribute to a phenotype associated with advanced age in CLD patients. Therefore, therapeutic interventions to reduce biological aging in CLD patients may improve health outcomes.
What Makes a Good Interpreter? A Study of Interpreter Trainees' Personality Traits
Vol.7 No.2
The current article examines data gathered from 68 interpreter trainees using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), a widely-recognized personality instrument. This paper includes general background information on the MBTI as well as a detailed review of the interpretation literature on the subject of personality. A multi-faceted discussion of the results focuses on the distribution of personality types within the subject sample in areas such as extraversion/introversion and on differences related to gender and education level. Some stereotypical notions regarding differences between interpreters and translators, for example, are not supported by the current findings. In addition, the analysis provides insight into the personality types of the Chinese, Japanese and Spanish trainees. The article concludes with some observations on the preponderance of “Thinking” females in the study and suggests possible directions for future research.
Dynamic percolation grid Monte Carlo simulation
Timothy M. Nicholson,Peter J. Halley,Nara Altmann 한국유변학회 2007 Korea-Australia rheology journal Vol.19 No.1
A dynamic Monte Carlo percolation grid simulation is used to predict the cure behaviour of thermoset materials. Molecules are distributed in a fixed grid and a probability of reaction is assigned to each pair of neighbouring units considering both reaction rates and diffusion. The concentration and network characteristics are predicted throughout the whole curing process and compared to experimental data for an epoxy-amine matrix.

Characteristics of Drift Pumice from New Caledonia Beaches
2016 Ocean science journal Vol.51 No.4
Siliceous drift pumice was collected from a total of 40 beaches around the main island of New Caledonia, Southwest Pacific, in order to determine its provenance. New Caledonia is enclosed by a barrier reef lagoon whose 2008 designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site brought attention to the environmental degradation caused by a century of open cast nickel mining. The frequent, voluminous pumice eruptions in the Southwest Pacific provide ample source material that is somewhat durable, highly transportable in water, and easy to collect and analyze. Geochemical and mineralogical analyses were used to identify the source of the pumice in order to map the transport vector across the open ocean and into the lagoon. Drift pumice was sampled during 2008 and 2010. The mineral assemblage of the pumice was consistently calcic plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, and opaque minerals. All of the pumice was of fairly uniform geochemistry: low in mafic elements, low in alkalis, with LILE enriched compared to HFSE, and negative Eu, Ti, and Zr anomalies. The pumice is predominately dacitic and tholeiitic. This geochemical signature was consistent with published data from the Tonga arc, which is further supported by the mineralogy. With the exception of two samples (which probably came from either the Kermadec arc or Vanuatu) all of the pumice comes from the Tonga arc. The samples from 2008 are consistent with pumice erupted from Metis Shoal in 2006, and the majority of 2010 samples are consistent with pumice erupted from an unnamed volcano (0403-091) that erupted in 2001.
Endoscopic Diagnosis of Duodenal Stenosis in a 5-Month-Old Male Infant
Maribeth R. Nicholson,Sari A. Acra,Dai H. Chung,Michael J. Rosen 2014 Clinical Endoscopy Vol.47 No.6
Duodenal stenosis and duodenal atresia are well-known gastrointestinal anomalies in patients with Down syndrome. Although duodenal atresia presents early and classically with vomiting in the immediate neonatal period, the presentation of duodenal stenosis can be significantly more subtle and the diagnosis delayed. Here, we describe the case of a 5-month-old male infant with Down syndrome and delayed presentation of high-grade duodenal stenosis diagnosed endoscopically. Pediatric gastroenterologists should include duodenal stenosis in the differential diagnosis of older infants and children with vomiting and should be familiar with the endoscopic appearance of this lesion.
