What Are We Teaching When We Teach Art?

Nicholas Houghton 한국국제미술교육학회 2017 미술과 교육 Vol.18 No.2

This paper presents a historical account of the art curriculum, in order to understand what is being taught in art today. It explains how present-day conceptions of art owe much to Romanticism and the social order which emerged in Europe under the influence of the Enlightenment. These conceptions have been tempered and disrupted by a hundred years of modernism, following from the 1960s by contemporary art. The art curriculum owed much to a combination of apprenticeships to teach skills and art academies to teach drawing and aesthetics. Only in the twentieth century did modern art exert an influence and when it did it was in the form of self-expression and formalism. Both of these have been challenged by contemporary art, which embraces mechanised means of producing art, places the emphasis on ideas, theories and contextual knowledge while subverting some traditional hierarchies. Contemporary art influenced significant art education movements, such as discipline-based and issues-based, learning about visual culture, as well as the use of mechanical means of making art, such as lens-based media. The core of art education is now the ability to explain, contextualise and even theorise. This should abet but not eclipse some of the things art can be, such as thought provoking, entertaining and moving.

Detecting artefacts in analyses of extreme wind speeds

Nicholas J. Cook 한국풍공학회 2014 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.19 No.3

The impact of artefacts in archived wind observations on the design wind speed obtained by extreme value analysis is demonstrated using case studies. A signpost protocol for detecting candidate artefacts is described and its performance assessed by comparing results against previously validated data. The protocol targets artefacts by exploiting the serial correlation between observations. Additional "sieve" algorithms are proposed to identify types of correctable artefact from their "signature" in the data. In extreme value analysis, artefacts displace valid observations only when they are larger, hence always increase the design wind speed. Care must be taken not identify large valid values as artefacts, since their removal will tend to underestimate the design wind speed.

Confucian Ritual and Reduced Deviancy among Young People

Nicholas Lassi 성균관대학교 유교문화연구소 2022 儒敎文化硏究(中文版) Vol.- No.37

This is a study of the connection between Confucian ritual and reduced deviancy among young people. Within Confucianism, rituals control behavior and reduce deviancy. Previous studies have linked family rituals with positive behavioral outcomes for young people across a range of developmental dimensions, prompting the current test applied to deviancy. Two main tests were conducted. In the first test, a ritual variable, “family routines,” was tested by negative outcome variables. This data was from the NLSY97, in the years 1997 to 2000, with a sample of 2,846 people. It was found that family routines were linked to reduced delinquency and substance use, even after controlling for gender, ethnicity, age, and so on. In the second test, a ritual variable, “how often the mother reads to the child,” was tested by negative outcome variables. This data was from the NLSY79CYA, in the years 1988 and 1998, with a sample of 1,087 mothers and children. It was found that ritualized mother-child reading was linked to reduced antisocial behavior and bullying, even after controlling for gender, ethnicity, and age.

City systems research: from morphology to relationality and positionality

        Nicholas A. Phelps 서울시립대학교 도시과학연구원 2021 도시과학국제저널 Vol.25 No.4

Making reference to the ‘old’ concept of megalopolis I glance back to identify a future research agenda on city systems. Megalopolis happens to be not just a convenient scale around which to organize discussion but also a concept more seminal in its ‘putative relationality’ than often appreciated. The concept contains important seeds of subsequent and future research on city systems more generally or else prompts them to the extent that the scale of urbanization and functional urban relations may now exceed it. I suggest five themes within this agenda that speak to the underplayed and emergent (1) morphological, (2) informational, (3) incubatory, (4) relational properties of megalopolitan systems and how the latter property of city systems promises (5) a positionalist perspective that reaches beyond urban economic organization at the megalopolitan scale. I note in conclusion the possible additional benefits of this agenda in promoting a measure of intra- and inter-disciplinary dialogue on a subject otherwise characterized by fragmentation.

The Potential Space of Art : Creativity, Affect and transgression

Nicholas Addison 한국국제미술교육학회 2012 미술과 교육 Vol.13 No.1

investigate the conditions that enable creativity to flourish school art education by looking at the environmental conditions that support and sustain creative activity. In the process I critique the emphasis on creative individuals drawing in Vygotskian notion of learning as a social event as well as critiquing the benign profile of creativity as a primarily productive process. The latter is examined in relation to a transgressive event in which school students "attack" their teacher through the license afforded them by a drawing "game." This is theorized in relation to Klein and her insistence on the persistence of infantile phantasy and its signiticance for creative action. To bring these ideas together I draw on Winncott's notion of a "potential space" as one in which safe, materna environments allow children to take risks, a necessity for creativity.

African Regional Trade Agreements and Intra-African Trade

Nicholas Ngepah,Maxwell C. Udeagha 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2018 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.33 No.1

This paper investigates regional trade agreements in Africa by using panel data spanning 1995~2014. Trade creation and diversion effects are assessed through a gravity model estimated using the Eicker–White robust covariance Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood method. This method proves superior to the usual nonlinear least square estimators, especially against heteroscedasticity and data with zero value. The findings suggest that regional trade agreements may enhance trade. The differences in effects can be matched with the effectiveness in implementation by respective member countries. The trade gains of regional trade agreements do not come at the expense of trade with non-members. By controlling for the duration within a regional trade agreement, we also show that a very small but significant share of the benefits occurs over time in the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa, Southern African Development Community, Southern African Customs Union, and West African Economic and Monetary Union. Trade benefits seem to decline over time in the East African Community.

The Grammaticalization of Demonstratives: A Comparative Analysis

Nicholas Catasso 세종대학교 언어연구소 2011 Journal of Universal Language Vol.12 No.1

An article, irrespective of its distribution across natural languages, dialects and varieties, is a member of the class of determiners which particularizes a noun according to language-specific principles of grammatical and semantic structuring. Definite articles in Indo-European languages – in those grammatical systems where they are present – are derived from ancient demonstratives through a grammaticalization process: given that demonstratives are deictic expressions (i.e. they depend on a frame of reference which is external to that of the speaker and of the interlocutor) with the role of selecting a referent or a set of referents, it is easy to understand what the role of “universal quantifier” of the, which is in English the prototypical – but questionable – example of definiteness, is due to. Demonstratives are frequently reanalyzed across languages as grammatical markers (very often as definite articles, but also as copulas, relative and third person pronouns, sentence connectives, focus markers, etc.). In this article I concentrate on the grammaticalization of the definite article in English, adopting a comparative-contrastive approach (including a wide range of Indo-European languages), given the complexity of the article.
