We have investigated the distribution of bacteria in kimbab and its materials. The total bactria counts were over 3×10 exp(6)/g(n=30) when the kimbabs were delivered to restaurant and it exceeded the prieliminary legal level 1 × 10 exp(6)/g even though it should be negative for coliforms. In order to look into the cause of bacterial contamination in kimbabs, we examined the content materials of kimbabs. The bacterial counts were founded 10^4-10^8/g for Kim, 10^4-10^8/g for sausage, 10^4-10^6/g for spinach, 10^3-10^7/g for carrot, and 10^3-10^6/g for danmugi, respectively. From these results it could be concluded that the bacterial contamination in Kimbabs are due to kim, spinach, carrot, and sausage. Therefore, so as to reduce the bacterial contamination for kimbab, the sanitary manufacture and storage of kim and the refrigeration of content materials should be went abreast.

<P>Reformation of diesel fuel was performed using a silicon carbide (SiC) block with penetrating walls. The atomized fuel was spray injected to the electrically heated block. The fuel–air mixture was reformed by partial oxidation and changed to synthesis gas including CO, CO<SUB>2</SUB>, H<SUB>2</SUB>O, O<SUB>2</SUB> and H<SUB>2</SUB>. The composition of the reformed gas was measured with varying fuel–air ratios. The degree of reformation or conversion changes with the temperature and a maximum conversion efficiency of ∼90% is attained at around 850°C. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</P>

Oleanolic acid is a natural triterpenoid that exists widely in foods and some medicinal herbs. The purpose of this study was to determine the antimicrobial activity of oleanolic acid against Streptococcus mutans strains isolated from a Korean population. Antimicrobial activity against these bacteria was evaluated by minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and time kill curves. The tolerance of human gingival fibroblasts and human periodontal ligaments to oleanolic acid was tested using a methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay. The MIC90 value of oleanolic acid for both S. mutans and S. sobrinus isolated from Koreans was 8 μg/ml. Oleanolic acid showed bactericidal effects against S. mutans ATCC 25175 T and S. sobrinus ATCC 33478 T at 1 × MIC (8 μg/ml) and had no cytotoxic effects against KB cells at this dose. The results suggest that oleanolic acid could be useful in the future development of oral hygiene products for the prevention of dental caries.

<P>BACKGROUND/AIMS: Primary colorectal signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRC) is a rare type of mucin-containing adenocarcinoma and little information exists about its clinicopathological features. METHODS: The clinicopathological features of 27 patients with primary colorectal SRC were compared with non-signet-ring cell mucinous carcinoma (MC) and non-mucinous adenocarcinoma (NMC). To analyze survival and recurrence, we used matched control groups. RESULTS: The mean age of patients in SRC was significantly younger than that of NMC (p = 0.003). The ratio of metastatic lymph nodes to harvested lymph nodes was also significantly higher in SRC (48.5 +/- 30.6) than in either MC (29.8 +/- 26.3; p = 0.009) or NMC (22.0 +/- 21.6; p = 0.003). In stage II and III, SRC was found to be associated with a worse cancer-specific survival and a higher systemic recurrence rates than either NMC or MC. CONCLUSIONS: Primary colorectal SRC has distinctive clinicopathological features and is associated with a poorer prognosis than the other histological subtypes.</P>

Despite growing interest and a recent surge in papers, the role of autophagy in glucose and lipid metabolism is unclear. We produced mice with skeletal muscle–specific deletion of Atg7 (encoding autophagy-related 7). Unexpectedly, these mice showed decreased fat mass and were protected from diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance; this phenotype was accompanied by increased fatty acid oxidation and browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) owing to induction of fibroblast growth factor 21 (Fgf21). Mitochondrial dysfunction induced by autophagy deficiency increased Fgf21 expression through induction of Atf4, a master regulator of the integrated stress response. Mitochondrial respiratory chain inhibitors also induced Fgf21 in an Atf4-dependent manner. We also observed induction of Fgf21, resistance to diet-induced obesity and amelioration of insulin resistance in mice with autophagy deficiency in the liver, another insulin target tissue. These findings suggest that autophagy deficiency and subsequent mitochondrial dysfunction promote Fgf21 expression, a hormone we consequently term a 'mitokine', and together these processes promote protection from diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance.
