      • Emission and capture processes in radiation-damaged silicon semiconductor diodes

        M.McPherson 한국물리학회 2002 Current Applied Physics Vol.2 No.5

Silicon diodes irradiated with 1 MeV neutrons show relaxation behaviour, which results from deep levels that cause the materialspectroscopy. In particular, two deep levels are found not to anneal out with increases in uence. It is possible to relate the activity ofone of the levels to the relaxation behaviour of the diodes. The suggestion is that the relaxation behaviour of radiation-damagedsilicon diodes is a consequence of the activity of those radiation-induced deep levels that are situated to act as generationrecombination centres.. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. • DOES EXCHANGE-RATE VOLATILITY AFFECT INTERNATIONAL TRADE FLOWS?

Matthew McPherson 사람과세계경영학회 2007 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.12 No.1

The theoretical model of Viaene and de Vries(1992) is presented and an empirical confirmation of its implications concerning the effects of exchange-rate volatility is performed. Positive exchange-rate effects in the presence of a well-developed forward market are documented. When exporters [importers] benefit from changes in exchange-rate volatility., then importers [exporters] necessarily lose. Therefore, the sign of the effect of exchange-rate volatility on trade can, and in some situation should, be positive. In addition evidence that trade balance (as a proxy for net currency position) is essential in determining the effect of exchange-rate volatility on trade flows is provided. Failing to take trade balance into account may help explain why the effect of exchange-rate uncertainty on trade has often been small in magnitude and or statistically insignificant in numerous prior studies.

      • National Agendas and Local Realities: Festive Material and Ritual Culture, Nationalism, and Modernity in the Chita Region of Japan

Sean McPherson 고려대학교 민족문화연구원 2012 Cross-Currents Vol.- No.3

The reworking of religious space in modern Japan encompassed the reinvention of the spatial, material, and ritual culture of matsuri 祭り(festivals). After a period of relative official disfavor, festivals in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were reinvigorated by changes in ritual process and spatial scope, as well as by shifts in the architecture and sculpture of dashi 山車 (wheeled festival floats). The incorporation of matsuri into broader discourses of national cultural identity was driven by the affective potential of their supposed cultural authenticity. This reinvention of festivity is evident in the Tokoname Matsuri of Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, where after the 1905 Russo-Japanese conflict several Edo-period shrine festivals were merged into a shōkonsai 招魂祭 (festival for the war dead). The spatial scope and ritual process, as well as the architecture and sculptural iconography, of the six dashi built for the new Tokoname Matsuri tied this regional city into national discourses of cultural authenticity, racial purity, and martial valor. The ideological resonance in prewar Japan of the Tokoname Matsuri and other festivals with nationalist imagery sprang from their indelibly local origins; matsuri were not controlled entirely from the top down, but rather were mediated at multiple levels.

      • Can Foreign-Born Populations Reduce Informal Trade Barriers? An Examination of US State Level Exports to Latin America

        Matthew Q. McPherson,William N. Trumbull,Daniel L. Friesner 사람과세계경영학회 2010 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.15 No.1

The importance of ethnic populations in reducing informal trade barriers has received increased attention in the recent literature. This analysis extends the literature by estimating the effect of Latin American ethnic populations on U.S. state-level exports to Latin America. Overall, the results document a statistically significant foreign-born effect. Thus, the results support the notion that foreign-born populations can reduce informal trade barriers and help exhaust trade potential where significant cultural or political barriers exist. Furthermore, disaggregating by country suggests that the overall effect of foreign-born populations on trade is not uniform across countries. This suggests a need for caution when using aggregate data, even among a relatively homogenous sample of countries.

Biphasic Effect of Curcuminoids on Oxidation of Postprandial Chylomicrons

        Peter A.C. McPherson,Niamh McKenna,Dílis Clare 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.12

Chylomicrons are large, triglyceride-rich lipoproteins that transport dietary lipids and lipophilic micronutrients through the lymphatic system and into the venous circulation. They therefore represent a valuable means of investigating the bioavailability of a range of bioactive molecules. Curcuminoids have a complex reputation, with most in vitro studies suggesting a beneficial effect (e.g., as an antioxidant), while in vivo work is often, at best, equivocal. We have prepared a curcuminoid extract from fresh turmeric and investigated the transfer of curcuminoids to chylomicrons by rapid ultracentrifugation. We subsequently characterized the chylomicrons in terms of their susceptibility to oxidation. There was a dose-dependent relationship between the curcuminoid level in chylomicrons and decreased levels of preformed lipid hydroperoxides (P < .05), which was broadly mirrored by paraoxonase arylesterase activity. At lower dosages (1000–3000 mg), curcuminoids protected chylomicrons against copper(II)-mediated oxidation, but at higher levels (4000–5000 mg), a pro-oxidant effect was observed. In conclusion, we report a clear biphasic (hormetic) effect of curcuminoids on lipid oxidation, which supports the theory that low dosages of bioactive compounds can have beneficial effects, while higher dosages may have an equivocal or negative impact on the disease.

      • Neochordoplasty versus leaflet resection for ruptured mitral chordae treatment: Virtual mitral valve repair

Choi, Ahnryul,McPherson, David D.,Kim, Hyunggun Elsevier 2017 Computers in biology and medicine Vol.90 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Degenerative mitral valve (MV) disease involving mitral prolapse is one of the most prevalent MV pathologies. Quadrangular leaflet resection and neochordoplasty demonstrate excellent clinical outcomes for the treatment of posterior leaflet prolapse. We evaluated the functional and biomechanical characteristics of a virtual pathologic MV model suffering from chordal rupture, performed virtual neochordoplasty and quadrangular leaflet resection, and compared the two post-repair MV functions. The pre-repair MV demonstrated severe posterior leaflet prolapse due to the ruptured P2 chordae and excessive stress concentration. Both repair techniques revealed reduced leaflet prolapse, decreased stress concentration, and restored leaflet coaptation. While neochordoplasty demonstrated further improved leaflet coaptation and superior posterior leaflet mobility, leaflet resection showed more uniform leaflet stress distributions. Virtual MV repair simulation has the ability to predict and quantitate biomechanical and functional improvement following MV repair. This strategy has the potential to help determine the most effective repair technique to restore MV function.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A virtual comparative study to evaluate and predict post-repair MV function. </LI> <LI> Comparison of the post-repair (neochordoplasty vs. leaflet resection) MV functions. </LI> <LI> Post-neochordoplasty – improved coaptation and superior posterior leaflet mobility. </LI> <LI> Post-leaflet resection – more uniform leaflet stress distributions. </LI> <LI> Potential of virtual MV repair to help choose the most effective repair technique. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Estimating Photosynthetically Available Radiation at the Ocean Surface from GOCI Data

Robert Frouin,John McPherson 한국해양과학기술원 2012 Ocean science journal Vol.47 No.3

A technique is presented to estimate photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) at the ocean surface from Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data. The sensor is adapted to the problem, since it measures at visible wavelengths and does not saturate over clouds, and the hourly data provides adequate temporal sampling to describe diurnal variability of clouds. Instantaneous surface PAR is computed as the difference between the solar irradiance incident at the top of the atmosphere (known) and the solar irradiance reflected back to space (derived from GOCI radiance), taking into account absorption and scattering by the clear atmosphere (modeled). Knowledge of pixel composition is not required. Apart from planetary albedo and sun zenith angle, the model parameters are fixed at their climatological values. The instantaneous PAR estimates at hourly intervals are integrated over time to provide daily values. The technique is applied to GOCI imagery acquired on 5 April 2011, and the GOCI daily PAR estimates are compared with those obtained from MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) data. Agreement is good between the two types of estimates, with a coefficient of determination (r2) of 0.778, a bias of 0.23 Em-2d-1 (0.5% with higher GOCI values), and a root-mean-squared difference of 5.00 Em-2d-1 (11.2%). Differences in cloudy conditions are attributed to daily cloudiness changes not captured by the MODIS observations. The comparison statistics indicate that GOCI PAR estimates have acceptable accuracy for regional studies of aquatic photosynthesis.

Investigating the Effectiveness of Intergenerational Programs in Reducing Ageism Toward Young People : A Systematic Review

        Katelyn Weinman,Levi McPherson,Ali Cobey,Kaitlin McWatters,Skai Woods,Loree Pryor,Claudia Hilton 대한작업치료학회 2020 대한작업치료학회지 Vol.28 No.2

Background: Ageism is recognized as a concern in the context of a rapidly aging population. Current literature acknowledges the outcomes of ageism toward older adults, however there has been little focus on the reciprocal effect toward young people. Programs geared at reducing ageism toward older adults show positive outcomes for both generations. This review explored the importance of intergenerational relationships and assessed the effectiveness of intergenerational programs on decreasing ageism toward young people. Method: A comprehensive database search was conducted to identify eligible studies published between 1989 and 2019. To be considered for final inclusion, studies had to implement an intergenerational program with outcome measures specifically addressing older adults’ attitudes toward young people. Results: Of the 4,661 articles retrieved, 12 studies were included with 1,570 participants. The specific intergenerational interventions differed, but commonalities included extended contact, community-based activities, and mentorship. Eleven of the twelve articles yielded statistically significant effects in reducing ageism toward young people. Evaluation of program outcomes resulted in four themes. Conclusion: Moderate evidence supports the effectiveness of intergenerational programs on reducing ageism toward young people. These results describe the literature and support the reciprocal effectiveness of these programs. Occupational therapists can be instrumental in promoting reduced ageism across the lifespan.
