        Background and Objectives : Overexpression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), a rate-limiting enyme in the generation of prostanoids from arachidonic acid, has known to be closely related to tumorigenesis, tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Selective or non-selective COX-2 inhibitors have been used for the growth inhibition of cancers with preventative intents ; however, it has been suggested recently that cancer cells have COX-2-independent mechanisms. Materials and Method : Using MTT assat and cell counts, we observed the growth inhibition of SCC VII, CT-26 and B16F10 murine cancer cell lines when treated by celecoxib and indomethacin. SNU-1041 and HOK 16B were used as controls for comparing with the murine cell lines. The COX-2 expression of these cell lines was analyzed by western blotting and compared with the degree of inhibition by the drugs. Results : The growth inhibition of the cell lines by the drugs was clearly demonstrated in a concentration-dependent manner and depended on the type of cell lines and test drug. The in vitro viability assay revealed that CT-26 expressing COX-2 protein was slightly inhibited but SCC Vn and B16F10 without COX-2 expression were moderate-to-highly inhibited by the drug treatment. Celecoxib and indomethacin appeared to have no close relation with the COX-2 expression of cell lines in their growth inhibition, HOK 16B showed a resistance by concentrations less than 25 μM of celecoxib, which implies that celecoxib has a more selective effect on tumor cells and is safer than indomethacin Conclusion : The growth of cancer cells was inhibited by celecoxib and indomethacin treatment, which depends on the type of cancer, treated drug, and its concentration. Their suppressive effect is not closely related to the COX-2 expression of cancer cells. (Korean J Otolaryngol 2004;47:562-8)

        Breast pain and tenderness occurs regularly in some women during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. But clinical and research literature focusing on cyclical mastalgia was rare. So descriptive study was conducted to examine the prevalence of breast pain, the impact of cyclic mastalgia on various activities. Young females at Kwandong University(n=114) completed a questionnaire. Sixty-three percent of women reported regular premenstrual discomfort. Current moderate-to-severe cyclic mastalgia was found in 14.9%. Mastalgia interferes with usual physical activity in 73% of women and with social (13%) and with sleep (26.7%). Cyclic mastalgia is common problem, sometimes severe enough to interfere with usual activities. Largely ignored both scientifically and clinically in the Korea, this disorder merit further biopsychosocial investigation.

      • 農業機械 利用度에 關한 調査 硏究 : 동력경운기, 탈곡기, 탈맥기를 中心으로 Concentrating on Power Tillers, Threshers and Barley Threshers

        This is the third step investigation of the usage and the custom work, on the acturalcondition of Agricultural machinaries in chinju area. Power tiller, threshers and barely threshers were investigated for this examine and the results are as follows. 1. In percentage by age of agricultura1 machinaries it was the higest between 36 and 45 with 40.8%. 2. Ones who had their own power tiller was 95.8% of the whole proprietor. 3. In the age of proprietor, farmers below the primary school level kept 46.6% and farmers above the high school had 25% in power case, 4. The spark p1ug and carburetor were more throuble than the other parts. 5. The taining techniques of power tillers were acted by themselves with 57.5% and the repairs of them were done with 51%. 6. Excluding the operation funds, the income of power tiller in one year was about ₩ 400,000.

        위험평가(Risk Assessment)에 의한 업종별 위험(Risk)의 구분

        A total of 514 workplaces in 17 industries were inbestigated through walk-through survey. These industries were all small companies with less than five workers and didn't have work environmental measurement data. These industries were ranked by risk that was evaluated by combination of toxicity and possibility of exposure to chemical hazardous agents produced at operations of industry. Risk Index(RI) was qualitatively combined by the combination between hazard and potential of exposure to chemical hazardous agents. Industries that were regarded as having the highest risk were wood and products of wood, chemicals and chemical products, basic metals, other vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, and fumiture manufacturing. These industries were found to have operations with higher risk than other industries. This study found that more attentions should be paid to these industries with that more attentions should be paid to these industries with high risk.

        태아와 성인의 배양된 섬유아세포의 교원질 합성양상의 비교

        With the development of antenatal diagnostic tools such as ultrasonography, some congenital anomalies or diseases can be detected in early fetal life. Routine serial antenatal check-ups have made it possible to predict the prognosis of these problems, and a few life-threatening single anatomic malformations have been treated by open fetal surgery. The experience of fetal surgery revealed that the human fetus appears to heal without any scarring. In contrast to adult animals, the response to tissue injury in the fetus is conspiciously devoid of acute inflammation. Indeed, the absence of neutrophils is perhaps the most consistent observation in fetal wounds and seems to be followed by absent or scanty fibroblast infiltration, which results in healing with sparse and well organized collagen deposition. Actually, the amount and quality of the collagen deposition were decided by the fibroblasts which infiltrated the wound. It is well known that fetal wounds have sparse collagen deposition, however, the mechanisms are still unclear. This study was designed to evaluate the role of fibroblast activity in the differences of the scar formation between the fetus and neonate. Fibroblast activity such as the cell growth rate, the amount of collagen synthesis and the synthesized collagen types of fetus(IUP 18-22 weeks) was compared with that of neonate. The amount of collagen synthesis was measured by H-proline uptake and the amount of collagen type Ⅲ was measured by Western blot using antihuman procollagen typeⅢ. The cell growth rate as determined by cell proliferation from the initial cell count of 5x10? to cell confluence was 3.6 x 10 in the fetal fibroblasts compared to 2.5x10? in neonatal fibroblasts. Fetal fibroblast synthesize 16.9 x 10⁴ cpm of collagen and neonatal fibroblasts synthesize 2.7 x 10⁴ cpm of collagen. The synthesized amount of type Ⅲ collagen was 2.1x10⁴ ug/ml, and 1.5x10⁴ ug/ml by fetal and neonatal fibroblasts, respectively. In conclusion, fetal fibroblasts grow faster and synthesize a smaller amount of collagen, but produce more type Ⅲ collagen than neonatal fibroblasts.

      • Inference from clinical and fluid dynamic studies about underlying cause of spontaneous isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection

        <ce:section-title id='st0005'>Purpose</B></P><P>Due to increased use and improvements in diagnostic imaging studies, spontaneous isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection (SISMAD), which is a rare vascular event, has been reported to occur on a more frequent basis. Although there have been some anecdotal case reports describing the underlying pathology of SISMAD, the etiology of the majority of SISMAD is still poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the underlying cause of SISMAD.</P><ce:section-title id='st0010'>Method</B></P><P>From July 2001 to March 2010, 51 consecutive patients with SISMAD (symptomatic 39, asymptomatic 12) and 38 patients with combined aortic and superior mesenteric artery dissection (CASMAD) were identified in a single institution by retrospective investigations. Diagnosis was dependent on multi-detector helical computed tomography (CT) scan. To find clinical characteristics of SISMAD, we compared demographic, clinical, and lesion (site of entry tear, type, length) characteristics between the two groups. To find any flow dynamic abnormalities at the proximal segment of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA), we conducted flow dynamic studies using computational fluid dynamic models (V.12; ANSYS, Inc., Canonsburg, Pa). Streamline patterns and wall shear stress distributions were tested with computer simulation models using three different branching angles of SMA from the abdominal aorta.</P><ce:section-title id='st0015'>Results</B></P><P>Compared to CASMAD, SISMAD was more common in men (90.2% vs 71.1%; <I>P</I> = .02), less frequently associated with hypertension (31.4% vs 65.8%; <I>P</I> = .001), and more frequently associated with intra-abdominal cancers (11.8% vs 0%; <I>P</I> = .036). In a fluid dynamic study using computational fluid dynamic models, we found abnormal mechanical stresses at the anterior wall around the convex portion of the SMA.</P><ce:section-title id='st0020'>Conclusion</B></P><P>Development of SISMAD seems to be less likely the result of hypertension or connective tissue disease but more likely due to hemodynamic force caused by convex curvature.</P>
