The Role of Eyes in Judgment on Face Animacy: An Adaptation Aftereffect Study
Yea Eun Chung,Sung-Ho Kim 이화여자대학교 이화사회과학원 2024 사회과학연구논총 Vol.40 No.1
Humans can readily differentiate between real and artificial faces, such as dolls or computer-generated faces. Recent research has shown that prolonged exposure to either human or doll faces leads to a shift in perception-faces previously recognized as human or doll may subsequently be judged as the opposite. This phenomenon known as the animacy aftereffect suggests that face animacy is a basic dimension of face perception. While various cues may guide this differentiation, the eyes emerge as a pivotal element. This study employs an adaptation aftereffect approach to explore whether isolated facial features can trigger an animacy aftereffect. Participants were exposed to various stimuli: a complete face, just the eyes, or a face devoid of eyes, belonging to either a human or a doll. Subsequently, they assessed the animacy of images that blended features from animate (human) and inanimate (doll) sources. The findings reveal that significant aftereffects arose from exposure to complete faces and eyes alone, whereas faces lacking eyes did not elicit the same response (Experiment 1). Additionally, exposure to a human face with doll eyes induced a notable aftereffect, whereas a doll face with human eyes did not (Experiment 2). These results highlight two critical insights: firstly, the eyes play a paramount role in judgments of animacy, surpassing other facial components; secondly, artificial eyes serve as more potent indicators of animacy compared to their human counterparts.
[P158] Two cases of lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei treated with oral mini pulse steroid therapy
( Yea Son Lee ),( Min Sung Kim ),( Bong Seok Shin ),( Chan Ho Na ) 대한피부과학회 2017 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.69 No.1
Lupus miliarisdisseminatusfaciei(LMDF)is a rare granulomatous skin disease mainly affecting the central area of the face. The eruption is characterized by small, discrete, red-brown or yellow papules, which occur singly or in crops, may be follicular or nonfollicular, develop rapidly.A variety of treatments are reportedly of some benefits, but controlled studies to establish the best treatment are lacking.A 33-year-old manpresented with a 2-month history of asymptomatic multiple various sized erythematous maculopapules on face. And, a 19-year-old man manifested with a 2-month history of multiple reddish papuloplaques distributed on the central and lateral areas of face, most obviously on the lower eyelids.Histopathological examinations of two cases revealed a large clear-boundary epithelioid cellgranuloma with central necrosis surrounded by lymphocytic infiltration. The chest X-ray and the results of routine laboratory studies were within normal limits. Based onthe clinical and histological findings, adiagnosis of LMDF was made.As oral tetracycline and antimalarials were not fully effective in our cases, oral mini-pulse steroid therapy(Dexamethasone 5mg bid for 2 days weekly) was initiated. After several months, the eruption improved significantly and resulted in the resolution of most lesions. Here, we report two cases of LMDF successfully treated with oral mini-pulse steroid therapy.
[P159] A case of hypertrophic lupus erythematosus successfully treated with cryotherapy
( Yea Son Lee ),( Min Sung Kim ),( Bong Seok Shin ),( Chan Ho Na ) 대한피부과학회 2017 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.69 No.1
Hypertrophic lupus erythematosus(LE)was first described by Behcet`s in 1940 as lupus erythematosushypertrophicus et profundus. This entity is characterized clinically by hypertrophic verrucous or vegetative plaques with indurated borders and minimal scaling on extensors of forearms, face, and upper part of trunk. Although treatment includes topical, surgical, and systemic therapy, achieving remission can be extremely difficult. A 49-year-old man presented with an 18-month history of mild pruritic multiple well-defined hypertrophic erythematous scaly papuloplaques on both post-auricles and anterior chest.Histopathologicalexamination showed acanthosis and hyperkeratosisof the epidermis with plugged follicles, liquefactive degeneration of basal cell layer with perivascular and periadnexal lymphocytic infiltration. The clinical and histological findings were consistent with the diagnosis of hypertrophic LE. Hydroxychloroquine and acitretin were firstly tried to treat him, but these were not effective. Later on,he was managed with intralesionaltriamcinolone and topical tacrolimus for 1 month, but these also were not fully effective. As the lesions were not controlled, he was treated with additional cryotherapy for hypertrophic lesions. The lesions resolved successfully within a few months leaving discrete scars. Herein, we report a case of hypertrophic LE treated with cryotherapy.

Purpose - Without question, globalization has presented different opportunities to entrepreneurs seeking to expand their companies in foreign markets. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation, entrepreneurial activity, information internalization, and product differentiation in export oriented firms. As such, entrepreneurial activities are divided into exploitative and exploratory opportunities. These opportunities are crucial in improving firms’ performance. Design/methodology - A structural questionnaire was developed using 21 factors/indicators from previous researches. The subjects of this study were recruited using convenience sampling in export SMEs in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. Data were collected through visits or e-mails from the export managers, executives, and CEOs of export SMEs in advance. 321 questionnaires were collected over a period of one month. 316 questionnaires were used in the final analysis. Findings - First, International Entrepreneurial-orientation (IE) has a positive effect on the exploration and exploitation of business opportunities. Second, the exploration and exploitation of business opportunities have a positive impact on information internalization. Third, information internalization has a significant effect on product differentiation and plays a mediating role in seeking opportunities, utilizing opportunities, and differentiating products. Originality/value - This study contributes to the development of academic discussions by explaining existing research gaps. First, there is currently a lack of research focusing precisely on the product differentiation capability of SMEs in manufacturing field in terms of IE. To bridge these gaps, we examined the entrepreneurial factors impact on product differentiation and tries to expand the discussion about the internationalization of SMEs, which were mainly focused on IT companies, and manufacturing companies. Second, there is no intuitive explanation regarding international entrepreneurial activity in terms of exploration and exploitation within existing. In this study, international entrepreneurship activities were classified in terms of exploration and exploitation.
[P323] A case of vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia in a patient with kidney transplantation
( Yea Son Lee ),( Min Sung Kim ),( Bong Seok Shin ),( Chan Ho Na ) 대한피부과학회 2017 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.69 No.1
Vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia(VIN) is a high-grade intraepithelialsquamous lesion and precursor of invasive squamouscell carcinoma. Theclassification distinguished twotypes of VIN: usual type (human papillomavirus(HPV)-related)and differentiated type (not HPV-related). There is a close relationship with other genital and extragenital premalignant and malignant condition, immunosuppression, and lichen sclerosus.A 44-year-old woman presented with a 1-month history of painful multiple various sized eyrthematous hyperkeratotic maculopapules and plaques with oozing on vulva. On past history, there was a kidney transplantation10 years ago and she had taken antihypertensive and immunosuppressive medications. Histopathological examination revealedbasal layer involvement, enlarged nuclei, hyperchromatic, pleomorphic, andincreased numbers of mitotic figures. The pap smear and ultrasonography were within normal limit. HPV typing was positive with 6 and 11. Topical 5% imiquimod cream was initiated. After 1 week, she refused to use the treatment due to burning sensation.Later on, treatment with cryotherapy was appliedevery 2 week, resulting in the resolution of most lesions. Herein, we report a case of vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia in a patient with kidney transplantation successfully treated with cryotherapy.
Genetic Variations and Haplotypes of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A Locus in a Korean Population
Yea, Sung Su,Lee, Sang Seop,Kim, Woo-Young,Liu, Kwang-Hyeon,Kim, Hyojin,Shon, Ji-Hong,Cha, In-June,Shin, Jae-Gook Lippincott Williams Wilkins, Inc. 2008 Therapeutic drug monitoring Vol.30 No.1
Glucuronidation catalyzed by UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) is one of the most important mechanisms for host defense against xenobiotics and endobiotics. Although genetic polymorphisms of several UGT1A isoforms have been reported separately, the haplotypes in all functional exons have not been identified, and little information is available regarding single nucleotide polymorphisms in Koreans. We analyzed genetic polymorphisms in all functional exons of the UGT1A locus by direct sequencing of genomic DNA from 50 healthy Korean subjects, and their haplotypes were inferred from genotype data using an expectation-maximization algorithm. We identified 67 polymorphisms, including three novel single nucleotide polymorphisms, 233C>T in UGT1A1 (T78M), 292C>T in 1A4 (Q98Stop), and 701T>C in 1A7 (I234T). Two amino acid substitutions, 1A4 Q98Stop and 1A7 I234T, were each associated with a decrease of enzymatic activity, whereas UGT1A1 T78M had no significant influence on catalytic function. The frequencies of the known variants in Koreans differed significantly from those reported in other ethnic groups. Haplotype analysis was performed within the polymorphisms in each UGT1A isoform as well as across the isoforms. Based on strong linkage disequilibrium within UGT1A7, between 1A5 and 1A4, and within 1A3, the complex was divided into three blocks, Block 7, Block 5/4, and Block 3. The haplotypes for each block were subsequently determined, revealing a profile that differed from those of other ethnic groups. These results suggest that genetic polymorphisms of the UGT1A locus differ between Koreans and other ethnic populations. Such differences should be considered in pharmacogenetic studies.
