New active organic thin film optical wavegudie ion sensor is proposed. Poly-dimethylsiloxane(RTV3140) membrane based on indicator tetramethylmurexide (TMX) and co-polymer matric membrane based chromoionophore(ETH5294) were used as active waveguide itself. Utilizing thin film membrane, fast respense time and high sensitivity are obtained. And sensor could be measured a wide range of Ca^(++) concentrations ranging from 10^(-6) to 1M by measuring the absorbance change at the 488nm and 514nm wavelength of light. The dependence of attenuation of guided wave on the properties of transduction layer is discussed.

쓰쓰가무시병 유행지역 일차진료 병원에 있어서의 임상진단의 정확성

목 적 : 쓰쓰가무시병 유행지역에 위치한 일차진료기관에서 임상소견을 근거로 이 병을 진단하였을 때 그 정확성을 검토하고자 하였다. 방 법 : 1994년 10월과 11월에 진해소재 의료기관에 내원한 쓰쓰가무시병이 의심된 환자의 임상진단의 정확도를 치료경과 및 IFA 시험 성적을 근거로 검토하였다. 결 과 : 쓰쓰가무시병으로 임상진단된 18명 환자중 발진은 모두에서, 농포는 1명에서, 가피는 15명에서, 림프절염은 13명에서 관찰되었다. 이 환자 중 17명에 대해서는 IFA 항체가 시험되어 15명에 있어서는 높은 항체가나 항체가의 상승을 보여 쓰쓰가무시병임이 확인되었다. 2명에 대해서는 각각 발병 제3일과 제4일에 시행된 1회의 항체시험이 음성이었으나 치료결과로 볼 때 쓰쓰가무시병으로 판단되었다. IFA 시험을 위해 polyvalent conjugate를 사용하여도 발병초기에는 양성결과를 얻을 수 없음을 보였다. 결 론 : 쓰쓰가무시병 유행지역에 있는 일차진료기관에서 임상소견을 근거로한 진단은 대부분 정확하였으며, 적절한 항균제로 치료되어 환자들이 회복된다는 결론을 얻었다. 또한primary lesion은 흑색 가피 상태로만 관찰되는 것이 아니고 발병초기에는 농포상태로도 관찰되며 발진은 모든 환자에서 관찰되었고 발병과 동시에 생긴다고 추측되었다. Background : Scrub typhus is endemic in many parts of Korea including Chinhae. Accurate and rapid diagnosis for effective treatment is usually based on clinical diagnosis without laboratory aids in endemic area. The aim of the study was to assess the accuracy of clinical diagnosis at primary-care clinics in an endemic area. Methods : During the period of October through November, 1994, 18 patients were clinically diagnosed as scrub typhus at primary-care clinics in Chinhae city. Clinical diagnosis was based on the presence of fever, rash, lymphadenitis and eschar (primary lesion). The accuracy of clinical diagnosis was assessed by the serological test and efficacy of treatment with tetracycline. Results : Among the 18 patients, rashes were noted in all patients, whereas lymphadenitis in 13 patients, eschars in 15 patients, and a pustule in one patient. Serologic studies showed high or rising IFA titer to Rickettsia tsutsugamushi in 15 patients. Clinical diagnosis of 3 patients without serologic evidences were considered accurate based on the clinical response to antimicrobial therapy. Two patients showed negative serology because of taking blood samples on the 3rd or 4th day of illness, respectively, and serologic test was not done in one patient. IFA test with ployvalent conjugate did not give faster positive results. Conclusion : Accurate and rapid clinical diagnosis of scrub typhus at primary-care clinics in endemic area is possible mainly based on clinical features, which makes early treatment with appropriate antimicrobial agents possible.

Diabetes might be associated with increased cancer risk, with several studies reporting hyperglycemia as a primary oncogenic stimulant. Since glucose metabolism is linked to numerous metabolic pathways, it is difficult to specify the mechanisms underlying hyperglycemia-induced cancer progression. Here, we focused on the polyol pathway, which is dramatically activated under hyperglycemia and causes diabetic complications. We investigated whether polyol pathway-derived fructose facilitates hyperglycemia-induced gastric cancer metastasis. We performed bioinformatics analysis of gastric cancer datasets and immunohistochemical analyses of gastric cancer specimens, followed by transcriptomic and proteomic analyses to evaluate phenotypic changes in gastric cancer cells. Consequently, we found a clinical association between the polyol pathway and gastric cancer progression. In gastric cancer cell lines, hyperglycemia enhanced cell migration and invasion, cytoskeletal rearrangement, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The hyperglycemia-induced acquisition of metastatic potential was mediated by increased fructose derived from the polyol pathway, which stimulated the nuclear ketohexokinase-A (KHK-A) signaling pathway, thereby inducing EMT by repressing the CDH1 gene. In two different xenograft models of cancer metastasis, gastric cancers overexpressing AKR1B1 were found to be highly metastatic in diabetic mice, but these effects of AKR1B1 were attenuated by KHK-A knockdown. In conclusion, hyperglycemia induces fructose formation through the polyol pathway, which in turn stimulates the KHK-A signaling pathway, driving gastric cancer metastasis by inducing EMT. Thus, the polyol and KHK-A signaling pathways could be potential therapeutic targets to decrease the metastatic risk in gastric cancer patients with diabetes.

This paper describes an autonomous driving control algorithm based on skid steering for a Robotic Vehicle with Articulated Suspension (RVAS). The driving control algorithm consisted of four parts: speed controller for following the desired speed, trajectory tracking controller to track the desired trajectory, longitudinal tire force distribution algorithm which determines the optimal desired longitudinal tire force and wheel torque controller which determines the wheel torque command at each wheel to keep the slip ratio below the limit value as well as to track the desired tire force. The longitudinal and vertical tire force estimators were designed for optimal tire force distribution and wheel slip control. The dynamic model of the RVAS is validated using vehicle test data. Simulation and vehicle tests were conducted in order to evaluate the proposed driving control algorithm. Based on the simulation and test results, the proposed driving controller was shown to produces satisfactory trajectory tracking performance.

This study was designed to observe the effects of feeding dietary fiber on the improvement of the fatty acid metabolism in brain, heart and lung in dietary hypercholesterolemic rats. Experimental groups with 5% level of cellulose(A group as control group), chinese cabbage root(B group),tora stalk (C group)and sweet potato stalk (D group)were adminstered to the male rats of the Sprague-Dawley for 4 weeks. The results obtaind are as follows. In the fatty acid composition of total lipid, phospholipid in the brain, the docosahexaenoic acid in the PUFA was major fatty acid. In the fatty acid composition of total lipid, phospholipid in the brain, the docosahexaenoic acid in the PUFA was major fatty acid. While in the fatty acid composition total lipid and phospholipid in the heart, the eicosapentaenoic acid in the PUFA was major fatty acid. And in the fatty acid composition of total lipid and phospholipid in the lung, the content of palmitic acid and oleic acid were higer than other fatty acid. These fats were influenced by the fatty acid composition of the test lipids. From the above result, the feeding of chinese root was effective on the improvement of the lipid compositions in principal organ tissue.

<P>The present study investigated the anti-aging effects of pomegranate juice concentrated powder (PCP) in hairless mice following 15 weeks of UVB irradiation (three times a week; 0.18 J/cm<SUP>2</SUP>). Skin moisturizing effects were evaluated through skin water, collagen type I and hyaluronan contents, as well as collagen type I and hyaluronan synthesis-related transcript levels. Wrinkle formation and edema scores (skin weights) were also assessed, along with skin matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, MMP-9 and MMP-13 transcript levels. To determine the anti-inflammatory effects of PCP, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-10 contents were observed. Caspase-3 and cleaved poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) were used as an apoptotic index in epidermal keratinocytes. To determine the anti-oxidative effects of PCP, nitrotyrosine and 4-hydroxynonenal immunoreactive cells were detected and glutathione (GSH) content, malondialdehyde levels, superoxide anion production, Nox2, and GSH reductase mRNA expression were all measured. The results indicated that skin wrinkles induced by photoaging were significantly reduced by PCP, whereas skin water contents, collagen type I and hyaluronan contents all increased. Furthermore, IL-1β levels in the PCP-treated groups were lower than those in the UVB-exposed control group. UVB-induced GSH depletion was also inhibited by PCP. Taken together, the results of the current study suggest that PCP has favorable protective effects against UVB-induced photoaging through anti-apoptotic effects, MMP activity inhibition and ECM (COL1 and hyaluronan) synthesis-related moisturizing, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects.</P>
