Driver-Condition Detection Using a Thermal Imaging Camera and Neural Networks

Autonomous vehicles aim to improve driving safety and comfort. In autonomous car SAE level-3 operations, it is necessary to determine whether the driving authority can be transferred from the computer to the driver. The driver must be awake and sufficiently alert to switch to manual driving operation. Physiological measurement methods require sensors that are in contact with the human body. These sensors are annoying, frustrating, and inconvenient for the driver. The purpose of this study is to determine a driver’s condition using eye-closing time and yawning frequency by a visible-light camera and a thermal camera. Eye-closings and yawns were detected using an appropriate non-contact detector with a visible camera and thermal camera. When a visible-light camera was used, the driver state recognition rate was 90 % or higher when the driver’s surroundings were brightly lit, but the recognition rate decreased significantly to approximately 4 % when the surroundings were dark. Using a thermal camera, the face recognition rate was 74 % under bright and dark conditions. For the thermal images, DLib and OpenCV could be performed well. Therefore, the DLib and thermal image combination could be used for a reliable driver drowsiness detection task.
Denosumab for Treatment of a Recurrent Cervical Giant-Cell Tumor

A 43-year-old male patient with C5 giant cell tumor (GCT) underwent tumor resection and anterior bone fusion of C4–C6. The tumor recurred locally 9 months after surgery with the patient complaining of neck and shoulder pain similar to his preoperative symptoms. Denosumab was administered and his pain disappeared after a two-month administration, with a sclerotic rim formation seen at the tumor site on computed tomography. He has been followed for 18 months with no evidence of tumor recurrence. Complete resection is generally recommended, but is not easy for many patients with cervical GCT because of the existence of neurovascular structures. Some patients suffer from recurrence and treatment becomes more difficult. As such, denosumab may be an efficacious option for treatment of recurrent GCT of the cervical spine, although long-term follow-up is required to monitor for presence or absence of recurrence.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mental workload of increasing driving speed, from 60 km/h to180 km/h, when operating a driving simulator. The evaluation, based on changes in facial temperature and electrodermalactivity, showed that the difference between nose and forehead temperature increased, that the skin potential level decreased,and that the skin conductance level increased. Monitoring facial temperature and electrodermal activity were both found to beeffective in evaluating the mental workload involved.
Reentry Control System Design for a Riser Pipe Experimental Model under Steady Current

The paper is concerned with a reentry control problem of moving a riser pipe hanged off and positioning its lower end just above a target. The difficulty of the manual control motivates us to design an automatic control system for dynamic reentry in current. A motion equation of a riser pipe model in current is derived via modal analysis. Then LQI (Linear Quadratic with Integral action) control methodology is applied to obtain an appropriate reentry controller by means of HILS approach. Experimental successful results on reentry control are shown.

This paper compares the impressions towards honorifics in both Japan and Korea to clarify the differences in social perceptions of honorifics, based on the results of the “Public Opinion Poll on the Japanese Language” in Japan and the “People’s sense of Language” in Korea. As a result, concerning the “degree of interest in the ’national language,’” interest in honorifics in Japan and South Korea contributed to an increased degree of interest in the national language as a whole. Similarly, concerning the “elegance of words,” honorifics were a factor in Japanese being perceived as elegant. Regarding “appropriate word use,” there was a strong likelihood for Japanese people to associate misidentification of honorifics with “undisciplined word use.“ Also, the questions related to honorifics were compared. As a result of the analysis, tendencies in Japan and Korea regarding “the course of honorifics in the future,” “the role of honorifics in building human relationships”, and “recognition of grammatical structure and knowledge of honorifics” became clarified.
