Technological Innovation Induced Growth of Engineering Industry SMEs: Case Studies in Bangalore

This paper, based on two engineering industry SME case studies, traces the origin and process of technological innovations enabling the development and introduction of new products leading to market expansion and enterprise growth. The study throws light on how entrepreneurs played a decisive role in recognizing market opportunities, building up crucial in-house technological capability, supplementing it with appropriate external assistance, to carry out technological innovations. A constant interaction with its customers is in-built into the system. As a result, the SMEs could achieve successful product innovations leading to their gradual growth, over time. Finally, based on the observations and inferences derived out of the two cases, a theoretical construct of the growth of innovation in SMEs is postulated. This is done linking the three stages of their development: (i) start-up and stabilizing, (ii) building up technological capability and implementing innovations; and (iii) opening up of new markets resulting in firm growth.

자궁외임신의 진단에 있어서 요임신반응검사의 기여도와 혈청내 B-hCG의 진단적 가치

1987년 3월1일부터 1987년 12월 31일까지 10개월간에 걸쳐 본 지방공사 강남병원 산부인과 에 입원치료하엿던 자궁외임신환자 40예에 대하여 혈중 B-hCG 검사하였던 바 다음과 같은 결론은 얻었다. 1. 자궁외임신 환자의 B-hCG 치는 36.2mIU/ml에서 41000mIU/ml까지였으며 이는 임신과 무 관한 대조군의 범위인 5mIU/ml이하와는 전혀 중첩되는 일이 없었으나 계류 및 불완전 절박 유산 환자와는 모두 중첩되었다. 2. 정상임신시 보이는 B-hCG 치와의 중첩은 4예이었고, 2예에서는 그보다 높게 나타났으며 34예에서는 정상임신보다 낮게 나타났다. 3. 난관 파열의 유무에 따른 B-hCG 치는 파열된 예가 파열안된 예에 비해 다소 낮게 나타 났으며 큰 차이는 없었다. 4. 요임신반응검사가 자궁외임신에 도움을 준 예는 60.5%에 해당되고 요임신반응검사가 양 성인 에가 음성인 예에 비해 혈중 B-hCG 치가 현저히 높게 나타났다. 이상의 연구결과로 보아서 첫째, 요임신반응검사의 자궁외임신 진단에 대한 기여도는 약 60%정도의 도움을 얻 을수 있었으며, 둘째로, 방사면역측정방법에 의한 B-hCG 의 측정은 임상적으로 자궁외임신 의 오진율을 훨씬 감소시킬수 있으며, 자궁외임신의 조기진단도 가능하리라 사료되나, 조기 유산 환자와의 감별은 B-hCG 측정외에 기타 진찰소견이 수반되어야 할 것으로 사료된다. From March 1, 1987. to December 31 1987. Fourty patients with ectopic pregnancy, which were diagnosed by biopsy of surgical specimen, were studied for serum B-hCG levels to evaluated the B-hCG values for aid of early diagnosis of ectoic pregnancy. Thr result were as follows; 1. the range of B-hCG levels of ectopic pregnancy was 36.2mIU/ml to 41000mIU/ml. This range was not overlapped with non-pregnant control group (below 5mIU/ml) but overlapped with all patients with missed incomplete and threatended abortion. 2. This range was below the low normal range of normal pregnancy except 6 cases, 4 cases among the 6 cases were overlapped with B-hCG range of normal pregnancy, and another 2 cases were higher than that range. 3. Mean and standard deviation of B-hCG values in 25 ruptured cases were 6384.8 mIU/ml and 9088.74 mIU/ml but those in 12 unruptured cases were 7154.06 mIU/ml and 12075.35 mIU/ml the ruptured cases showed slighly lowered B-hCG level than that of unruptured cases. 4 the efficacy of the urinary pregnancy test for diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy was 60.5% and the serum B-hCG levels of positive urinjary pregnancy test group were distinctively higher than that of negateive urinary pregnancy test group . In the above study, the serum B-hCG determination using RIA was useful method for early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy, but other more diagnostic procedure except serum B-hCG titers were required for differential with early abortive patients

Automatic Electronic Cleansing in Computed Tomography Colonography Images using Domain Knowledge

Electronic cleansing is an image post processing technique in which the tagged colonic content is subtracted from colon using CTC images. There are post processing artefacts, like: 1) soft tissue degradation; 2) incomplete cleansing; 3) misclassification of polyp due to pseudo enhanced voxels; and 4) pseudo soft tissue structures. The objective of the study was to subtract the tagged colonic content without losing the soft tissue structures. This paper proposes a novel adaptive method to solve the first three problems using a multi-step algorithm. It uses a new edge model-based method which involves colon segmentation, priori information of Hounsfield units (HU) of different colonic contents at specific tube voltages, subtracting the tagging materials, restoring the soft tissue structures based on selective HU, removing boundary between air-contrast, and applying a filter to clean minute particles due to improperly tagged endoluminal fluids which appear as noise. The main finding of the study was submerged soft tissue structures were absolutely preserved and the pseudo enhanced intensities were corrected without any artifact. The method was implemented with multithreading for parallel processing in a high performance computer. The technique was applied on a fecal tagged dataset (30 patients) where the tagging agent was not completely removed from colon. The results were then qualitatively validated by radiologists for any image processing artifacts.

병렬 화일 시스템을 위한 통신 모듈 설계

본 논문은 주전산기 Ⅳ에서 운용될 병렬 파일 시스템의 통신 모듈 설계에 관해 기술한다. SPAX는 Clustering SMP 구조의 병렬 컴퓨터로, 고성능 화일 서비스를 위해서 병렬 화일 시스템의 지원이 요구된다. 병렬 화일 시스템의 통신 모듈은 병렬 화일 시스템이 통신 환경에 독립적인 구조를 가지도록 설계되어야 한다. SPAX 컴퓨터를 위한 병렬 화일 시스템의 통신 모듈은 Chorus IPC를 기반으로 설계 되었다.

인터넷폰의 설계 및 구현

인터넷폰은 전이중 방식을 지원해야 하며 가정용 전화기와 같은 기능성을 가져야 한다. 또한 효과적인 압축 및 복원 알고리즘을 통해 높은 음지를 유지하면서도 압축 및 복원에 대한 연산을 최소화해서 음성의 녹음에서 재생까지의 지연을 최소화해야 한다. 본 논문을 통해 전이중 방식 지원을 위한 모델과 비동기 이벤트의 처리를 위한 모델 및 압축/복원 알고리즘을 제시하였다. 그리고 이들을 이용해서 인터넷폰을 구현했다.

MISIX 기반의 병렬 파일 시스템의 통신 모듈 설계 및 구현

POFS는 SPAX 컴퓨터에서 운용될 병렬 파일 시스템이다. SPAX는 ETRI에서 개발중인 클러스터 SMP 구조를 가지는 다중 프로세서 컴퓨터이며 SPAX의 운영체제는 Chorus 마이크로커널에 기반한 MISIX이다. 마이크로커널 기반의 운영체제는 마이크로커널의 IPC를 기반으로 구현된 서버의 집합이며, 운영체제의 서브시스템들 혹은 서브시스템들과 사용자 프로그램은 클라이언트/서버 구조를 가지게 된다. 그러므로, 운영체제의 서브시스템을 위한 통신 모듈의 설계 방법은 시스템의 성능에 직접적인 영향을 준다. 본 논문은 MISIX의 병렬 파일 시스템인 POFS 개발함에 있어서 제기된 통신 모듈의 구조와 성능에 관해 기술한다. POFS는 높은 병렬성 및 확장성을 가지며, 단일 시스템 이미지를 제공하는 분산 환경의 파일 시스템이다. POFS의 통신 모듈은 클라이언트/서버 구조인 POFS의 특성을 효과적으로 지원한다. This paper is concerned with development of a communication module of POFS(Parallel Operating File System), which is the parallel file system to be operated on SPAX computer. SPAX is multiprocessor computer with clustering SMP architecture and being developed by ETRI. The operating system for SPAX is MISIX based on the Chorus microkernel. POFS has client/server architecture basically so that it is important to design a communication module. The communication module is so easily affected by network environment that bad design is the major reason that decreases the portability and performance of the parallel file system. This paper describes the structure and performance of the communication of the POFS. the theme is issued in the course of designing and developing POFS. The communication module of POFS was designed to support the portability and the architecture of parallel file system.
